Did You Know?
A new study in the journal Neurology suggests that
working out is the most effective way to protect the brain
from Alzheimers disease. Researchers studied roughly 700
study participants from Scotland, all of whom were born
in 1936. Each participant reported their levels of leisure
and physical activity at age 70, rating their physical activity
on a scale from moving only to perform household chores
to participating in heavy exercise or competitive sport
several times per week. Participants were also asked to rate
how often they engaged in social or intellectual activities.
At age 73, participants received an MRI to measure
certain biomarkers in their brains. Those who participated
in more physical activity showed less brain shrinkage and
fewer white matter lesions, both of which can be signs of
Alzheimers disease. And while social and intellectual
activities can be beneficial in preventing Alzheimers
disease, the study found that social and intellectual
engagement werentas helpful to the brain as physical
exercise. The types of physical exercise most beneficial to
the brain are still being studied, though information
presented at the 2012 Alzheimers Associations
International Conference suggested that strength training
is perhaps the most effective form of exercise.
According to a 2010 study conducted by
researchers at the Sleep and Neuroimaging Laboratory
at the University of California, Berkeley, a midday nap
might just make you smarter. The study was conducted
with the help of 39 college students, each of whom was
asked to learn a series of new names and faces at noon
and match the faces a few minutes later. The same test
was then performed at 6 p.m. that same day. A group
of the participants who took a nap at 2 p.m. performed
better than those students who did not nap. The
latter group, in fact, had a significant decline in
memory test scores. Researchers credit the nap with
refreshing the brain, and they credit the study with
showing that the brains ability to absorb new
information declines over the course of a typical day.
When a person naps, that decline seems to be reversed.
However, researchers noted that college students, who
generally do not get adequate sleep, might not make the
best subject matter thanks to typically
poorsleeping habits. Men and women who do get
adequate sleep might not experience any improved
memory if they take a nap during the day.

Addicted to added sugar?
by Karen Kaplan
Sugar. Honey. Maple syrup.
Molasses. High fructose corn syrup.
All of these are added sugars, and
you are probably eating _ and drink-
ing _ too much of them.
So says the latest report from the
U.S. Centers for Disease Control
and Prevention. Researchers at the
CDCs National Center for Health
Statistics examined survey data from
thousands of American adults to
fgure out whether were
following the 2010 Dietary Guide-
lines for Americans. Tese guide-
lines advise us to limit our total
intake of added sugars, fats and
other discretionary calories to
between 5 percent and 15 percent of
total calories consumed every day.
It should come as no surprise that
Americans as a whole are blowing
past the 15 percent limit. In fact, the
new report fnds that from 2005 to
2010 we got 13 percent of our total
calories from added sugar alone,
according to the CDC report. Tis is
a problem not just because sugar is
full of calories that cause us to gain
weight, but because sugary items
ofen displace fruits, vegetables and
other foods that contain essential
nutrients.
Overall, men consumed more
sugar per day (an average of 335
calories) than women (239), the
researchers found. But as a
percentage of total calories
consumed per day, men and women
were pretty even _ 12.7 percent vs.
13.2 percent.
Adults tended to eat the most
sugar in their 20s and 30s, with
consumption falling steadily over
time. For instance, men between 20
and 39 ate and drank 397 calories of
added sugar per day, on
average, while men in their 40s and
50s consumed an average of 338
such calories per day and men in the
60+ crowd consumed 224 calories
of added sugar daily. For women,
the daily consumption peaked at
275 calories in the 20-39 age group
before falling to 236
calories for those 40 to 59 and a
mere 182 calories for those 60 and
older. For both men and women,
added sugars contribution to total
calories fell steadily from the 14 per-
cent range to the 11 percent range.
African Americans got more of
their calories from added sugars
_ 14.5 percent for men and 15.2
percent for women _ than whites
(12.8 percent for men, 13.2 percent
for women) or Mexican
Americans (12.9 percent for men,
12.6 percent for women). Te
diferences between whites and
Mexican Americans were not
statistically signifcant.
Te researchers also discovered
that the poorer people were, the big-
ger the role that added sugars played
in their diets. Women in the lowest
income category got 15.7 percent of
their calories from sugar, compared
with 13.4 percent for women in the
middle income category and 11.6
percent for women with the highest
incomes. For men, the correspond-
ing fgures were 14.1 percent, 13.6
percent and 11.5 percent.
Although sugar-sweetened soda
is the single biggest source of added
sugars in the American diet,
beverages overall accounted for only
one-third of added sugars
consumed by adults, compared with
two-thirds from food. In
addition, about 67 percent of added
sugars from food were eaten at
home, along with 58 percent of
added sugars from drinks.
Te researchers noted some
diferences between their fndings
for adults and what other studies
have reported about children and
teens. For example, the contribution
of added sugars to total daily calories
was comparable for black and white
children and lower for Mexican-
American children. And, children
and teens of all income levels get the
same proportion of daily calories
from added sugars.
Added sugars do not include the
sugars that occur naturally in fruit
and milk. As the name implies,
added sugars are used as
ingredients in prepared and
processed foods and drinks. For the
sake of the analysis, other forms of
added sugar included brown sugar,
raw sugar, corn syrup, corn syrup
solids, malt syrup, pancake syrup,
fructose sweetener, liquid fructose,
anhydrous dextrose, crystal
dextrose and dextrin.

Green ways to protect your skin
Much of the public now
recognizes the dangers of
overexposure to the sun. Skin
cancer ranks as one of the most
common forms of cancer across
the globe, and individuals are
increasingly conscientious about
protecting their skin from
damaging ultraviolet, or UV,
rays. Certain natural sources
might be able to reduce the risk
of skin cancer.
Leafy vegetables
Spinach may not only provide
Popeye with his strength, but it
also may help reduce your risk of
developing skin cancer.
Researchers from Queensland,
Australia found that eating leafy
green vegetables plays an
important role in reducing skin
cancer risk as wearing protective
clothing and sunscreen.
Te study, led by Dr.
Jolieke van der Pols from Te
Queensland Institute of
Medical Research, was
conducted over 11 years and
studied 1,000 people from
Sunshine Coast, Queensland.
Researchers discovered that
participants who consumed at
least three servings per week of
green vegetables could cut their
chances of developing skin
cancer by up to 55 percent. It is
believed the variety of nutrients
found in the vegetables,
including folic acid, vitamin A
and C, as well as the carotenoids
lutein and zeaxanthin, work
together to fght cancer.
Tea
Years ago, researchers at the
University of Minnesota
Hormel Institute tested a
solution containing chemicals
known as polyphenols. Te
solution, which was made from
extractions from green tea, was
tested on live mice that were
exposed to UV light. Te study
found that a protein labeled
JNK-2 is directly related to the
development of skin cancer, and
this protein could be blocked by
the application of polyphenols.
Tis application helps reduce
the formation of skin tumors.
While drinking tea has long been
touted as a way to prevent
various cancers, this study looks
at the way the tea applied
topically also can help.
Cover Up
Applying a sunscreen is one
of the easiest and more popular
ways to protect the skin, but
some people worry about the
side efects of chemicals used in
popular sunscreens. Covering up
the face and skin as much as
possible is one way to reduce
exposure to such chemicals.
Wear a densely woven hat with
a brim that features at least a
two- to three-inch overhang,
which can protect the face, neck,
ears, eyes, and lips from the sun.
Dark-colored clothing also can
help block the suns rays.
Although it may seem odd to
wear long sleeves and pants in
hot temperatures, doing so can
prevent UV exposure.
Aspirin
In 2013, new information was
published in Cancer, the
American Cancer Societys
medical journal, that linked daily
aspirin therapy to a decreased
risk for melanoma -- the
deadliest form of skin cancer.
According to the research, data
was collected on nearly 60,000
white women ages 50 to 79 years.
Te women were studied for 12
years, and the study found that
the women who took 81
milligrams of aspirin daily had a
21 percent lower risk of
developing melanoma than those
who did not take aspirin. While
it is still too soon to make the
recommendation that all women
should take aspirin daily, some
doctors feel the benefts
outweigh the risk for those with
a family history of melanoma.
Avoidance
Te recommendation to avoid
the peak hours of the sun is still
a viable method to
preventing skin cancer. Peak
hours are between 10 a.m. and 4
p.m. during the summer in the
northern hemisphere. Te hours
may be diferent depending on
where you live and your
proximity to the equator. Remain
indoors as much as possible
during peak hours. Tere are a
variety of diferent ways to lower
your risk of developing skin
cancer, many of which are
natural.

Understanding and fighting
hypertension go hand in hand
Hypertension, ofen referred to as high blood pressure, afects
millions of people across the globe. According to the American Heart
Association, more than 76 million adults in the United States alone
have been diagnosed with high blood pressure. But even children
and teens can sufer from hypertension, making it a formidable but
largely preventable foe.
Understanding high blood pressure, or HBP, may encourage adults
and children alike to take steps to maintain a healthy blood pressure,
which can reduce their risk of heart attack, stroke and kidney disease.
What is HBP?
HBP is ofen associated with men and women who are considered
to be constantly on edge, nervous or hyperactive. But even laid back
men, women and children can sufer from HBP. As a persons heart
beats, it creates pressure that pushes blood through the bodys
arteries and veins. Tose arteries are made of muscle and a
semi-fexible tissue that stretches when the blood is pumped through
them. Te more forcefully that blood is pumped, the more that
fexible tissue is stretched. When the tissue is stretched too much, a
person is at an increased risk of sufering from a host of problems,
including blood clots, plaque buildup that can lead to heart attack
and stroke, and tissue and organ damage from arteries that have
narrowed or become blocked.
Are there symptoms of HBP?
Te AHA notes that HBP is typically devoid of symptoms. So
people sufering from HBP may not know it if they have not
routinely had their blood pressure checked. Over the years many
myths have prevailed regarding HBP. Such myths can be dangerous,
giving people a false sense of security regarding their blood pressure.
For example, in the early 1900s it was assumed that people with high
blood pressure experienced more frequent headaches than those with
healthy blood pressure. However, a study published in the journal
Neurology found that people with high blood pressure were
signifcantly less likely to have headaches than those with healthy
pressure readings. Nosebleeds have also been linked to high blood
pressure, but one study found that 83 percent of patients treated for
high blood pressure did not sufer from nosebleeds.
Debunking such myths is important, as it further emphasizes the
need to receive routine blood pressure readings as the only
reliable means for men, women and children to determine if they
have high, low or healthy blood pressure. Anyone experiencing
frequent headaches or nosebleeds should consult a physician but
should not assume such occurrences are a byproduct of high blood
pressure.
Can certain foods help reduce high blood pressure?
One rumor concerning HBP actually has some merit. A
heart-healthy diet that includes the following foods can help men,
women and children manage their blood pressure and reduce HBP if
necessary:
* Blueberries: Blueberries contain anthocyanin, a natural compound
that a recent study published in the American Journal of Clinical
Nutrition found can protect the body against HBP.
* Whole grain cereal: A Harvard University study found that whole
grain cereals that are high in fber can reduce a persons risk of
developing HBP.
* Beet juice: A study from British researchers published by the AHA
in its journal Hypertension found that a glass of beet juice can lower
blood pressure in a matter of hours.
* Low-fat dairy products: A 2008 study that examined nearly 30,000
women at an average age of 54 found that those who consumed the
most low-fat dairy products, including skim or low-fat milk, were
signifcantly less likely to develop high blood pressure than those who
consumed dairy products that were high in fat.
HBP is a common problem that afects millions of people of all
ages across the globe. Tere are several ways men, women and
children can reduce their risk of HBP and lower their blood pressure
if its already high.
Routine blood pressure screenings are ofen the only way men and women can
learn if they are sufering from high blood pressure.

Exercise is an essential
element of a healthy life-

a healthy diet, exercise
puts men and women on
a path toward optimal

some of which can be
deadly.
But many people fnd
they simply dont have the

high as you scale each
pair of steps. Tis helps
build your leg muscles
and makes the daily climb
up the staircase a little
more strenuous.
Turn TV time into
treadmill time. Watching
a little television at night
is how many people relax
and unwind, but it can be
a great time to squeeze
in some daily exercise
as well. Opinions as to
whats the best time of
day to exercise vary, and
no defnitive study exists
to suggest one time of day
is better than another.
People who like to relax
with a little television
time at night should make
the most of that time
by hitting the treadmill,
elliptical machine or exer-
cise bike instead of just
plopping down on the
couch. Add a television
to your homes exercise
room or purchase a gym
membership where the
cardiovascular machines
are connected to televi-
sions. You will still get to
enjoy your favorite shows
while simultaneously
getting the beneft of
exercise.
Say bon voyage to
the conference room.
Professionals who spend
lots of time in meet-
ings can add a simple
twist that incorporates
exercise into a typical
business meeting. Rather
than conducting the
meeting in a conference
room, propose a walking
meeting when possible.
A walking meeting is
the same as a standard
business meeting, but its
conducted on foot out-
side of the ofce. Walking
meetings can provide
some much-needed
energy for you and your
fellow staf members,
who may appreciate the
chance to get out from
behind their desks and
stretch their legs while
still getting work done.
Take your smartphones
or tablets along to jot
down important ideas,
just like you would in a
more traditional meeting.
And make the most of
your walk by leaving time
for some light stretch-
ing before and afer the
meeting. Chances are you
will return to your desk
reenergized and glad you
found a way to get some
exercise despite of a busy
schedule.
Park far away when
shopping. Its tempting
and almost human nature
to hunt for the parking
spot closest to the door
when shopping at the
mall or even the grocery
store. But for those who
want to include more
exercise in their daily
routines, parking far away
from the entrance to your
favorite store is a great
way to incorporate more
walking into your life.
Walking is a simple yet
efective cardiovascular
exercise, one that the
Mayo Clinic notes can
lower your blood pres-
sure and manage your
weight while lowering
your low-density lipopro-
tein, which is commonly
referred to as bad cho-
lesterol. In fact, research
has indicated that regular,
brisk walking can be just
as efective at lowering
a persons risk of heart
attack as more vigorous
exercise, including jog-
ging. When parking far
away from the entrance,
just make sure you park
in a well-lit area where
others can easily see or
hear you.
Many adults fnd they
simply dont have the
time to commit to routine
exercise. But there are
several simple ways to
incorporate exercise into
your existing routine
without taking time from
your already busy day.
Simple ways to incorporate exercise

Integrative Medicine:
Exercise helps survival rate of
cancer patients, study indicates
By Drs. Kay JuDge
anD Maxine Barish-
WreDen
The SacramenTo Bee/
mcT
Do you need a
little help in getting
yourself up off the
couch to exercise? We
all know that exercise
can help reduce the
risk of many diseases,
including heart disease,
high blood pressure,
diabetes and stroke.
Staying fit can also
reduce your risk of
cancer, and if you are
a cancer survivor,
exercise can increase
your likelihood of
surviving.
In a recent study
published in the
Journal of Clinical
Oncology, researchers
looked at the impact
of physical activity on
survival in a group of
over 2,000 adults who
had been diagnosed
with invasive but
non-metastatic
colon cancer.
Patients completed
questionnaires to assess
lifestyle information at
baseline, and then they
were followed for up to
16 years.
Compared to the
couch potatoes,
patients who engaged
in 8.75 or more METS
(metabolic equivalents)
of exercise per week,
equal to approximately
150 minutes of brisk
walking, reduced
their mortality by a
whopping 42 percent.
And as expected,
sitting was found to be
deadly _ people who
sat more than six hours
per day compared with
those who sat for fewer
than three hours per
day had an almost 30
percent increase in
mortality.
The benefits of
exercise also apply
to breast cancer. In a
2008 study, researchers
found that women
who increased their
physical activity to at
least 9.0 METS per
week after a diagnosis
of local or regional
breast cancer reduced
their risk of death by
45 percent. In contrast,
women who decreased
their physical activity
after diagnosis had a
fourfold greater risk of
death.
Why does exercise
improve survival from
cancer? One theory is
that it reduces stress
and inflammation,
both of which are
known to drive cancer
cell growth.
Many doctors,
including oncologists,
dont talk to their
patients about exercise.
This is unfortunate,
because along with
increasing your
chances of survival,
exercise helps reduce
the side effects from
the cancer itself, as
well as side effects
from cancer treatment.
Exercise can reduce
fatigue, anxiety and
pain, and it can also
increase endurance,
improve your
emotional well-being
and sexual function,
and reduce insomnia.
So lace up your
tennies, grab your dog,
get outside into this
beautiful spring air,
and start moving. And
if you are a pet-free
household, consider
this: Dog owners tend
to get more exercise,
and owning a dog may
improve other health
parameters as well. See
you on the trail!
Forgoing the elevator in
favor of the stairs is one
way to incorporate more
exercise into your daily
routine.

Doctor talks about sudden
cardiac arrest
By Bonnie Miller ruBin
Chicago Tribune/(MCT)
its always tragic when
someone dies suddenly.
But when such an unex-
pected event happens to a
seemingly healthy child or
young adult, its especially
devastating.
While such fatalities are
extremely rare, the warning
signs and symptoms of sud-
den cardiac arrest (SCA)
can ofen go undetected for
years -- and young athletes
are especially vulnerable.
With the fall sports season
in full swing, we turned to
Dr. Joseph Marek, a Down-
ers Grove-based cardiolo-
gist with Midwest Heart
Specialists-Advocate Medi-
cal Group and a member
of medical advisory board
of Parent Heart Watch. Te
Glencoe-based nonproft
will be holding a fundraiser
Saturday at the Chicago
Teatre, produced and
directed by former eSPn
radio Chicago General
Manager Bob Snyder, who
lost his 17-year-old daugh-
ter to SCA in 2008, while
she was playing soccer. For
more information, visit
sportsradioawards.com or
parentheartwatch.org.
Q. What is SCA?
A. Sudden cardiac arrest
(SCA) is a condition in
which the electrical system
of the heart malfunctions,
resulting in a disruption of
the hearts normal rhythm
and loss of its ability to
deliver blood to the body.
if untreated, this disruption
results in sudden death.
Q. How can a heart sud-
denly cease to function?
A. in an older individual,
the most common cause
leading to ventricular fbril-
lation is a blockage in the
hearts blood supply. you
might get warning symp-
toms, such as chest pains.
But in a younger individual,
you might not appear to
have any warning signs ...
but those who work with
youth must be aware (of
signs), such as palpitations,
fainting or an unexplained
shortness of breath.
Q. What causes sudden
cardiac arrest and how can
it be prevented?
A. Hypertrophic cardio-
myopathy -- a thickened
heart muscle that makes
it harder for the heart to
pump blood -- is the cause
of sudden, unexpected car-
diac death. An eCG (elec-
trocardiogram) -- a simple,
noninvasive baseline test
that measures the electrical
activity of the heart -- could
probably detect more than
60 percent of those at risk.
Q. So why dont we dont
we do more eCGs?
A. its just not standard
practice here. in europe, its
routine to do it on all young
athletes, along with taking a
thorough family health his-
tory and a physical exam.
But in the u.S., we just do
the latter two ... but theres a
growing number of doctors
who think we should be
including an eCG.
Q. Why arent there more?
A. i think there are
concerns about cost. But a
screening ranges from $30
to $50 in a physicians ofce.
you spend way more than
that in preseason shopping
at a sports store. i dont
think it should be manda-
tory, but considering that it
afects 1 in 50,000-70,000
individuals means its a lot
more common than other
things that parents worry
about and can befall your
child.
Q. Who are some of the
athletes who have died
from sudden cardiac arrest
or had their careers short-
ened by heart disease?
A. Gaines Adams, a
Chicago Bears defensive
lineman, had SCA and died
Jan. 17, 2010. Cuttino Mo-
bley retired from the nBA
afer being diagnosed with
hypertrophic cardiomyopa-
thy. Jiri Fischer, a hockey
player for the Detroit red
Wings, went into cardiac
arrest during a game in
2005 and later retired.
Q. i read that youve done
over 80,000 screenings?
What has turned you into
such an advocate?
A. Because these deaths
are so devastating to a
family and the community,
i felt i had a stake in this,
not only as a cardiologist
but as a parent. Tis is what
prompted me to start our
screening program, young
Hearts for life, in 2006.
When you can detect a
life-threatening condition
before its too late, thats the
payof. i go to sleep at night
feeling a lot better.
What is sudden
cardiac arrest?
Sudden cardiac arrest is
among the leading killers
of Americans, striking an
estimated 382,800 people in
the uS each year.1
Sudden cardiac arrest
is an abrupt loss of heart
function caused primarily
by the rapid and/or chaotic
electrical activity of the heart
known as ventricular tachy-
cardia (VT) or ventricular
fbrillation (VF). During
sudden cardiac arrest, the
heart fails to pump blood to
the vital organs.
Signs of sudden cardiac
arrest include unconscious-
ness and irregular or no
breathing.
Sudden cardiac arrest
renders a person clini-
cally dead within minutes,
unless treated immediately
with defbrillation or with
bystander CPr followed by
defbrillation. For every min-
ute that elapses afer sudden
cardiac arrest, the chances of
survival diminish 10 percent.
Sudden cardiac arrest is
noT a heart attack (myocar-
dial infarction), which is
caused by a blocked vessel
leading to loss of blood sup-
ply to a portion of the heart
muscle. However, sudden
cardiac arrest ofen occurs
secondary to a heart attack.
Sudden cardiac arrest
is a serious public
health issue.
About nine out of 10
Americans who have suf-
fered a SCA have died. Tis
92 percent death rate on the
national level has not signif-
cantly improved for more
than three decades.
Almost 80 percent of sud-
den cardiac arrests happen
outside the hospital, and less
than 30 percent of victims
receive bystander CPr.
Sudden cardiac arrest in
young athletes.
Te causes of sudden car-
diac arrest in children and
adolescents are varied and
ofen include undiagnosed
heart conditions that result
from abnormal heart struc-
ture or function, primarily
electrical abnormalities or
outside factors such as a
sudden blow to the chest or
drug use.
in the united States, a
young competitive athlete
dies suddenly every three
days. Te average age when
sudden cardiac death occurs
in young athletes is 17.5
years.
Te risk of SCA is three
times greater in competitive
athletes. More than two-
thirds of young athletes who
die suddenly are basketball
and football players (67%).
College male basketball play-
ers are disproportionately
afected by SCA (1 in almost
7,000).
How you can help save
the lives of sudden
cardiac arrest victims.
recognizing SCA is the
frst crucial step. you should
always call 911 if you see
someone collapse.
Sudden cardiac arrest is
time critical. Waiting for
help to arrive will decrease
the chances of survival. if
chest compressions are not
provided to SCA victims
within a few minutes, they
will likely die.
Chest compressions keep
oxygen in the blood circulat-
ing throughout the body.
using an AeD to shock
the heart back into rhythm
can double the chance of
survival.

Psoriatic arthritis afects many people
People who sufer from psoriasis
or have a family history of this skin
condition may be at risk for psoriatic
arthritis, a serious disease that causes
extensive swelling and joint pain.
Te Psoriasis and Psoriatic Arthritis
Education Center notes that up to 30
percent of people with psoriasis also
develop psoriatic arthritis. Psoriasis
is an auto-immune skin condition
in which the skin reproduces cells
at an accelerated rate. Tis causes
patches of faky, irritated skin, also
known as plaques. Psoriatic arthritis
can develop at any time, but it is
common between the ages of 30 and
50. Environmental factors, genes and
immune system responses play a role
in the onset of the disease. Patients
with psoriatic arthritis can develop
infammation of their tendons, carti-
lage, eyes, lung lining, and sometimes
aorta.
Psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis do
not necessarily occur at the same
time. Psoriasis generally comes frst
and then is followed by the joint
disease. Te skin ailment precedes
the arthritis in nearly 80 percent
of patients. Psoriatic arthritis is a
rheumatic disease that can afect
body tissues as well as joints. Psoriatic
arthritis shares many features with
several other arthritic conditions,
such as ankylosing spondylitis, reac-
tive arthritis and arthritis associated
with Crohns disease and ulcerative
colitis.
Te rate of onset of psoriatic
arthritis varies among people. For
some it can develop slowly with mild
symptoms. Others fnd it comes on
quickly and is severe. Symptoms of
the disease also vary, but may include
the following;
* generalized fatigue
* swollen fngers and toes
* stifness, pain, throbbing, swelling,
and tenderness in joints
* reduced range of motion
* changes in fngernails
* redness and pain of the eyes
In many cases, psoriatic arthritis
afects the distal joints, those that are
closest to the nail in fngers and toes.
Te lower back, knees, ankles, and
wrists also are afected.
Treatments usually include a combi-
nation of medications and thera-
peutic exercises to reduce pain and
swelling. NSAIDpain relievers help
but may be combined with stronger
medications, such as corticosteroids,
as well as medications that suppress
the immune system.

Vitamins and cancer prevention
People take daily vitamin supple-
ments for a variety of reasons.
Many believe that vitamins will
serve as an insurance policy of
sorts should they not be consum-
ing the necessary vitamins and
minerals through their diets. Oth-
ers believe that vitamin supple-
ments will ease certain ailments
or help prevent diseases, such as
cancer. Beliefs such as these have
helped the dietary supplements
business become a billion-dollar
industry.
Tere have been many clinical
studies conducted to look into
the correlation between vitamin
supplements and the prevention
of certain types of cancer. Under-
standing the results can be con-
fusing. Tere is no magic formula
for consuming a broad-spectrum
vitamin supplement to serve as
a blanket remedy for preventing
cancer. However, there have been
some studies that show certain
vitamins may help lower risk for
specifc cancers. For example, a
study published in 2010 found
women who had high levels of
vitamin A and C in their bodies,
whether from diet or supplement
use, had fewer cases of cervical
cancer compared to women with
lower levels of these vitamins. Vi-
tamin B6 has been known to have
various benefts, including reduc-
ing a persons risk of developing
lung, breast and colon cancer.
Tose with high blood levels of
B6 have a lower risk, but there is
no proof that taking B6 supple-
ments will have the same benefts.
Some studies indicate that vitamin
E supplements may reducemens
risk of developing prostate cancer.
Studies in the 1970s suggested
that high doses of vitamin C could
be an alternative cancer treatment,
says Te Mayo Clinic. Tese fnd-
ings were debunked when it was
discovered the research methods
used to reach the conclusions
were fawed. Subsequent studies
did not corroborate the 1970s
results. However, more attention
is now being paid to adminis-
tering vitamin C intravenously,
which has diferent efects than
when the vitamin is taken orally.
Until clinical trials are completed,
researchers cannot say for sure if
intravenous vitamin C will be the
new all-natural cancer cure.

Small steps against stroke
Stroke is the leading cause of
serious, long-term disability in the
United States, says the Internet
Stroke Center. It is also the third
leading cause of death. Preventing
stroke can mean saving lives.
A recent study of 40,000 women
ages 45 and older published in the
March issue of Meridian
HealthViews found that walking at
least 2 hours a week could lower the
risk for stroke by 30 percent.
Walking faster may even provide
additional benefts.
Cardiovascular activity is good
for the heart and can keep blood
pumping efectively through the
body. Aim for 30 minutes a day.

Did You Know?
Tere are many health benefts
associated with vegetarianism.
Research indicates that vegetarians
have lower levels of LDL, or bad
cholesterol, and obesity rates are
generally lower among vegetarians
than their meat-eating counterparts.
In addition, vegetarians have
reduced incidences of type 2
diabetes and lower blood
pressure than meat eaters. However,
unless their diets are well balanced,
vegetarians also may have low levels
of protein, which can compromise
their overall health.
Protein is essential to build and
repair bodily tissues and provide
amino acids. Muscle, hair, skin,
and connective tissue are mainly
made up of protein, as are several
important chemicals in the body,
including hormones, enzymes and
neurotransmitters. Proteins are
made up of amino acids. Tere are
some amino acids that cannot be
produced by the body and must
come from a protein-rich diet.
Many of the foods that contain
protein are animal-based (meats,
poultry, milk, eggs, etc.), and these
foods are commonly avoided by
vegetarians and vegans. As a result,
their bodies may be defcient in vital
nutrients.
Te amount of protein needed
varies by ones body weight, age and
activity level. A person who is 150
pounds should eat roughly 55 grams
of protein each day. A 200-pound
person should eat around 75 grams.
An ounce of meat has around 7
grams of protein per serving.
Terefore, vegetarians will have
to replace those grams with other
sources of protein. Here are some
options:
* Eggs (large): 6 grams
* Milk (1 cup): 8 grams
* Cottage cheese (1/2 cup): 15 grams
* Cheese (1 ounce): 6-10 grams
* Tofu (1 ounce): 2.3 grams
* Most beans (1/2 cup cooked): 7-10
grams
* Soybeans (1/2 cup cooked): 14
grams
* Split peas (1/2 cup cooked): 8
grams
* Peanuts (1/4 cup): 9 grams
* Sunfower seeds (1/4 cup): 6 grams
* Quinoa: (2 ounces cooked): 2.5
grams

A Less Painful Treatment
Option for Hemorrhoids:
Transanal Hemmorhoidal Dearterialization (THD)
by dr. Virginia Winburn
Colon and Rectal Surgery
Associates
everyone has hemorrhoids
vascular cushions around
the anus composed of small
arteries, veins, smooth muscle
and connective tissue. You
probably dont think about
them unless they become
inflamed, causing bleeding,
pain or itching.
External hemorrhoids are
located around the outside of
the anus, covered by normal
skin. These rarely bleed, but
may swell, clot, become painful
or cause itching. Internal
hemorrhoids are located
about one inch inside the anus
and are covered by a fragile
mucosal lining. These may
become stretched and are
easily traumatized, resulting in
bleeding.
Hemorrhoidal symptoms
most often affect adults
between ages 45 and 65, but
they may affect any age group.
Risk factors include any heavy
lifting, constipation, diarrhea,
pregnancy, aging, erect posture
and simply gravity.
Hemorrhoid treatment
depends on whether the
symptoms are caused
by external or internal
hemorrhoids or both. Your
doctor will perform a physical
exam, which may include
anoscopy and colonoscopy.
Initial treatment steps include
avoidance of straining
activities, high-fiber diet, sitz
baths and over-the-counter
medications.
Office-based procedures
include hemorrhoidal banding
and infrared coagulation.
Hemorrhoidal banding is a
common outpatient office
treatment for enlarged internal
hemorrhoids that are bleeding,
protruding from the anus or
causing difficulty cleaning
after bowel movements. A
rubber band is placed on the
base of the enlarged area,
causing it to fall off within
three to five days. Infrared
coagulation is another office-
based treatment that uses a
laser to burn the enlarged
hemorrhoid. Both procedures
cause minor discomfort for a
few days.
Surgical procedures include
operative hemorrhoidectomy
and transanal hemorrhoidal
dearterialization (THD).
tHd: Minimal pain, fewer
complications
A less painful treatment for
hemorrhoids, THD was first
used in the United States
in 2005. It uses ultrasound
to precisely locate the
hemorrhoidal arteries, which
are then tied off, leading to
shrinkage of the cushion. The
hemorrhoidal cushion is then
pulled upward and tacked
back into its normal anatomic
position. The sensitive
skin around the anus is not
injured, which minimizes
postoperative pain. THD is
an outpatient procedure with
a low complication rate and
minimal postoperative pain.
Most patients resume normal
activity within a few days.
Operative hemorrhoidectomy
should be considered when
mixed internal and external
hemorrhoids are present, for
severe cases or when one is
more conservative treatments
fail to improve symptoms.
The hemorrhoidal artery is
tied off, the stretched cushion
is removed and the defect is
sewn closed. Though this is
the most effective treatment
with the least recurrence,
there is significant associated
pain and prolonged recovery,
averaging two to three weeks.
Its estimated that only 5 to 10
percent of patients will need
operative therapy.
