An investigation into the consumer brand identify with a focus on fast moving consumer good and the retail culture sectors. SOI Throughout the course of this module i hope to effectively demonstrate my passion for branding, identity and packaging. I intend to do this by focusing on five briefs that all require a strong amount of research into effective branding strategies and that need solid visual identities. My dissertation also has a strong focus on branding and how it is most effective; stemming from my contextual investigations of second year I am directly relating my dissertation to my design development by extensively researching what makes a brand successful but more importantly how social change can directly effect how a brand needs to be structured to succeed. A further aspect of design i hope to explore further throughout this module is with regards to digital design. Many of the briefs i have chosen to work on have great scope for screen like websites, apps and motion graphics I hope to explore this in depth as i think it is of paramount importance in the ever changing world of design. Finally, i hope to gain further professional experience as i believe that otherwise may find it challenging to make a smooth transition from leaving university into the professional design world. I hope to do this through studio visits, live clients and short placements at any opportunities that are available to me over the rest of the academic year.

Design Context The brief was to develop a series of publications that informed my personal investigation into branding and identity for different sectors. The conceptual focus of the brief was based around five different sectors within the branding and identity market. I chose to work on this brief in this way to improve my knowledge of the professional industry as well as to inform my own practice well. The design context was an on going process and I spent 10 weeks on this brief. BRIEF 1

The brief was to produce a brand and product range for the urban beekeepers society. City produced honey can be of exceptional quality with urban bees having a more carried diet that honey bees in the countryside. I chose the brief because it was a competition brief at a design agency that I admired. As well as this there was lots of scope for conceptual development on a subject matter that I found interesting. Further choice decisions stemmed from the broad range of potential deliverables as well as a limited number of creative restrictions I spent 6 weeks working on this brief.

BRIEF 2

The brief was to construct the full range of branding and identity for a fashion student at Leeds College of Art. Through taking inspiration from the visual elements of the clothes as well as the personality o the client I chose this brief as it provided lots of scope to developed my conceptual branding skills. As well as this there an opportunity to design for an actual space or exhibition, which is something, that I hadnt previously tried. Furthermore, this brief gave me the opportunity to collaborate with creative from various background allowing me to improve my collaborative skills. I spent 4 weeks on this brief.

BRIEF 3

The brief was to reinterpret a famous brand, product or service. I chose to re-interpret the malt vinegar brand Sarsons. The focus of the brief was to conceptually take a brand and re-design it in a breakthrough way. This allowed me to develop my branding skills as well as my conceptual and research skills. I chose this brief because it was a competition brief at a design studio that I admired. The conceptual focus of the brief was to play on the nostalgia of 1950 British seaside holidays. I spent 5 weeks on this brief.

BRIEF 4

The brief was to design the Leeds College Of Art 2013 BA (Hons) Yearbook. The conceptual focus of this brief was based around Aristotles Theory Of Credibility and from this a rule of three was created. I chose to work on this brief as it gave me the opportunity to work in a large team and thus improve my collaborative and time management skills. As swell as this it was a large multipage document that was being professionally printed. This allowed me to gain further print skills as well as destining for type and layout. I spent 8 weeks on this brief.

BRIEF 5

This brief was to produce the brand and identity for a photographer studying at Leeds college of art. The conceptual focus of this brief was based around social coding: that being how society perceives others and is perceived itself. Through this a brand revolved around angles, points of views and degrees was created to communicate this concept. I chose this brief because it allowed me o highly develop my conceptual skills

as well as being able to work with the digital side of graphic design through moving image and web design. I spent 6 weeks working on this brief. BRIEF 6 The brief was to produce the brand and identity for a corporate company under the name of Infoserve Corporation. The conceptual focus was to produce something corporate and professional for a live client. I chose this brief because it was a paid and fast turnaround brief that allowed me to produce work for the corporate sector. As well as this it was a collaborative brief that allowed me to develop my team work skills. I spent 1 week on this brief. Brief 7 The brief was to design and present a pitch for the Graphic Design yearbook. The conceptual focus of this brief was to communicate the course of Graphic design and its students as a collaborative body through the replacement of names with angles that add up to 360. I chose this brief because the rewards were high and would have allowed me to work on a professional print job. Furthermore there was an opportunity to verbally present in this brief and so I improved my presentation skills also. I spent 1 week on this brief. Brief 8 The brief was to design and present a pitch for the Leeds College Of Art Prospectus. The conceptual focus of this brief was to communicate how as art students we cannot be defined and are all individual. The use of aesthetically pleasing undefined pixels communicated this. I chose to work on this brief due to the reward of winning a paid, professionally printed job as well as the opportunity to develop my branding and conceptual skills. Brief 9 The brief was to re-design and produce the business cards for a fellow student at Leeds College of art studying visual communication. The conceptual focus of this brief was to create a logo that effectively communicate the specialist field of motion graphic and video editing that the students specialised in. I chose to work on this brief because it allowed me to develop my branding skills as well as my design for print. Having the business cards professionally printed helped me to develop these skills. I spent 2 days on this brief. Additional Comments Deliverables for Brief 2: Fashion Identity are in use for the exhibition and can be found in the fashion gallery space.
