Dear Sir, I have confusion with the measurement of propagation delay procedure.

I have been following the procedure as given below to measure the propagation delay. Experiment: INVERTER Schematic

Test Bench

Vpulse details voltage1 = 0V, voltage2 = 1.8V, Delay time = 0, Rise time = 1ns, fall time = 1ns Pulse width = 10ns, Period = 20ns

The Procedure that, I have been following to measure delay. After the Simulation and outputs waveform is obtained, I go to Tools Calculator

i> from the functions select delay, this will open the delay panel. ii> Place the cursor in the text box for signal1, select the wave button and select any one input waveform from the waveform window. iii> Repeat the same for signal2, and select the output waveform. iv> Set the Threshold value 1 : 0.9 (half of VDD) Edge number 1 :1 Edge type 1 : rising Periodicity 1 :1 Threshold value 2 : 0.9 (half of VDD) Edge number 2 :1 Edge type 2 : falling Periodicity 2 :1 This directs the calculator to calculate delay at 50% i.e. at 0.9 volts. vi> Execute OK and observe the expression created in the calculator buffer. vii> Execute Eval to perform the calculation, note down the value returned after execution. This will give one VALUE. -3.576366536289094E-11 From the functions select delay, this will open the delay panel. (2nd iteration) ix> Place the cursor in the text box for signal1, select the wave button and select any one input waveform from the waveform window. x> Repeat the same for signal2, and select the output waveform.

iv>

Set the Threshold value 1 : 0.9 (half of VDD) Edge number 1 :1 Edge type 1 : falling Periodicity 1 :1 Threshold value 2 : 0.9 (half of VDD) Edge number 2 :1 Edge type 2 : rising Periodicity 2 :1 This directs the calculator to calculate delay at 50% i.e. at 0.9 volts. i> Execute OK and observe the expression created in the calculator buffer. ii> Execute Eval to perform the calculation, note down the value returned after execution. This will give another VALUE. 1.383786488964849E-10 So now taking both values average we get the propagation delay (8.70665E-11) of the circuit for the particular frequency (50MHz in this case) of Vpulse applied as input. Queries /Doubts: 1. The Period of Vpulse is 20nS that means frequency of operation in this case is 50MHz? 2. Is the delay procedure followed correct? 3. I have kept trans time as 40nS that means it will give 2cycles performances details? Please give your feedback whether this is the correct way to measure propagation delay or not. If not please tell me the procedure or the document that gives propagation delay procedure. Please help me sort out this issue. Thanks & Regards Rohith K
