Kijana Beauchamp is a member of the DuPont Manual Football team. Sometimes he feels socially caught up and unfocused at times. I am like a deer at the headlights sometimes, and it translated during the football season too, he commented. Sometimes Kijana felt dismantled during his second year of high school football. Its different! he sighed, referring to varsity football, Varsity is so much different from freshman football, like the transition period between little league and high school football changed. The formula for complexity and the level of difficulty is pretty simple. Players change because of the different levels of puberty and growth of players during their high school years. Competition This season Kijana sees the 2011 season as a chance to compete for a stating job on the Manual varsity team this year. The team is not that deep, position wise, in his position area. The team lost two defensive tackles from the previous year in Brock Alstatt, Casey Barnes, and John Stepp. We had some really good players at my position, with Brock being a two time all district player and Casey and John really stepped their level of play as we continued through the season. Tough Moments Even though the football team continued to move through the season, Kijana became depressed and committed a lot of very self-inflicted emotions on himself on a daily basis. I was mad that at one point, then I would be happy around my friends to kind of dismiss and displace my issues at that point. he admitted. Love for the Movement Football is a culture icon among young men. Although only just over 1% of the people in the United States Country play football, it is a popular way to keep young men out of trouble and giving them something challenging to do. For Kijana football has always been a culture. He has just been playing since the age of 5 and on. His dad played in high school and was a good college player at Kentucky State. Football is one of those things I try to be the best at. Growing up, I felt pressure to play because my dad played, so its just one of those activities I do every year. Sometimes I may have not wanted to go but my mom helped to push me through the tough practices so I could see the field on game day. Sometimes Kijana feels disconnected between the game and himself. LEARNING IN AN INSTANT This upcoming year Kijana is learning a new defense for the third straight year. But as he explains, this year wont be as difficult. This year we are technically running a new defensive style, but many things are still implemented and corporated from ast year, such as the terms we use to call out defenses and specific assisnments. Simon Clifford also gave his take saying, The coaches we had last year are allthe same were just still looking at some new things implemented in our playbook, he says Were running the same things, just out of different looks and sets of formations.

Only Time Can Tell In little league football, Kijana Beauchamp was always considered to be one of the best players on the field. He was always in on a tackle or creating a whole for his fellow teammates on the offensive line. Even getting 10 tackles in a championship game. Then came high school football. Kijana was now just another guy on the field who worked hard. It was tough man, he explains with his face in emotional disgust I was just so short compared to everyone else and it felt awkward since I didnt really know anybody since I had missed all the summer practices. It really started for him in his last year of little league football. Inspiration Biggie Smalls: Lupe Fiasco; Cornell West; John Wooden These are just a few names out of dozens and dozens that culminate Kijanas philosophy. He even looks at simple things in nature as enlightning. The names on his list tell of the kind of person he is. Biggie is kind of laid back, while Lupe takes on my lyrical standpoint, and Tupac is my internal emotions, he describes while laying back in his seat, all of these describe my different personas and multiple personalities. Most days he describes himself as going oblique and thinking intellectually. But he does foretell his critiques of all of the people who inspire him. Sometimes when I look at a Biggie for say, I see a former drug dealer and a person who roamed the streets. Seeing some of the things he went through before he passed, opened me up to different perspectives and I know what he did was wrong but he was trying to support his family. Although he is very diverse in his picking of artists, if you look at his IPod youll find a lot of Lupe Fiasco. Kijana describes Lupe as someone who is very lyrically inclined, sometimes a little over his head. Lupe is very talented and has a laid back look at life that I hope rubs off on me. Some people try to find reasons to write him off whether that hes Muslim or that he doesnt look like your typical rapper, he says enthusiastically But Im fine with the fact hes of a different religion and the way he dresses inspires me even more because he doesnt try to be like the crowd. In a way Kijana Beauchamp is seemingly similar to other teenagers. Just because he does make his own decisions, he does consider inspirational people as role models. Contrasting to Charles Barkleys belief of athletes being celebrities, Kijana sees anybody you look up to as a role model. Most times, its going to be someone who is in your everyday life that poses as the most influential in your life, he says Thats just my point of view.

Musical Gliding When talking to Kijana, he described how much music helps to soothe him almost like a therapy he described it as energetic and passionate. Music allows me to really get in the zone and get fired up especially for games and other events that I go to. Its a great way to dive into other peoples creativity and see the hard work that they put into their music. Kijana describes himself as a person who loves hearing good music. Rap, R&B, pop, jazz, and some rock are genres he loves to listen to. Man, I really love to listen to good music. Obviously there is just some stuff Im not going to enjoy but I could listen to country and techno. I plan to open myself up to all things and not just limit myself to ne thing, he says emotionally.

Literature is a very important aspect of Kijanas life. He likes to really read about sports since that is the field he wants to go into for his career. I really want to go into sports writing when Im older. Right now Im looking at what other sportswriters are doing and seeing how I can improve myself and what I can do to be better them. Kijana really prides himself on keeping up with multiple things that go on in sports. Two sportswriters that inspire him are Stephen A. Smith and Chris Broussard. I really enjoy reading what sportswriters have to say, because it brings another aspect to sports. Just how much work it takes to get the interview and then to write the actual story too is a lot of hardwork.

Lil Bro Denzel Beauchamp is the brother of Kijana Beauchamp. Denzel is a very shy eight year-old and rarely initiates a conversation. Kijana describes his relationship with his younger brother as developing but still not what he full expects. When asked about his brother Kijana says Denzel, thats my little brother, right there man, he says with a smile He helps to lift up my attitude everytime I get to see him or hear his voice over the phone, hes crazy, but in a good way.. Timely Enjoyment Kijanas sister Kaliah is an important part of Kijanas life. While their resemblance is similar, theyre relationship is continuing to grow. My sister is only four years old but Im starting to see her really develop her own style and its cool, he says But I also have to look out for her and make sure she doesnt talk out of her element. Kaliah is the youngest of all the children and Kijana calls her young and wild. Kijana also describes that he really loves having a younger baby sister that he can love and guide.

Here is a closing to the year so many things that happened to shift gears. Portfolio pieces, tests, activities and struggles throughout the year even happened to shed a few tears. A lot of emotions as a sophmore now moving on to junior year and Im closing a door. Now its time to really focus on school, junior year is the most important year in the high school pool. Now I move on to a new year Ill try to enjoy summer with my football peers.
