What:

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Division of HIV/AIDS Prevention, with the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health and the City of Los Angeles, is hosting the Los Angeles launch of REASONS/RAZONES, a new national, bilingual communications campaign to encourage HIV testing among Latino gay and bisexual men. Launching June 6th in Los Angeles, REASONS/RAZONES is the newest communications campaign under CDCs Act Against AIDS initiative, which was developed in partnership with the White House and the Department of Health and Human Services to combat complacency and stigma about HIV/AIDS. The campaign with the tagline Whats your reason? / Cul es tu razn? asks gay and bisexual Latinos to consider the reasons for getting tested through a compelling series of campaign ads that feature men sharing their reasons for getting tested. REASONS/RAZONES uses images of family, friends, and partners to emphasize a strong sense of self, family and community and provides information about accessing fast, free and confidential testing. The campaigns bold images and messages will appear in mobile and online ads, national and local print and outdoor/transit advertising and will be the focus of a national media relations effort to generate print and broadcast news stories.

Why:

HIV is still a crisis in the United States. There are an estimated 1.1 million people currently living with HIV and 50,000 more are newly infected every year. Nearly 1 in 5 of those living with HIV doesnt know theyre infected. Approximately 18,000 people with AIDS still die each year. Latinos are the largest and fastest-growing ethnic minority in the United States and also one of the groups most heavily impacted by HIV. Latinos account for 16 percent of the population, but 20 percent of all new HIV infections nationwide. Latino gay and bisexual men account for nearly 8 out of 10 new HIV infections among Latinos in the United States, and almost one out of four new infections among gay and bisexual men o f all races. Yet, too many Latino gay and bisexual men with HIV dont know they are infected. A recent study among gay and bisexual men in 21 American cities found that more than a third (37 percent) of Latinos living with HIV were unaware of their infection. The need for greater testing is particularly urgent among young men. CDC data show that 70 percent of HIV positive Latino gay and bisexual men between the ages of 18 and 24 did not know they were infected. According to the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health, in 2011 Latino gay and bisexual men in Los Angeles accounted for 38% of new AIDS cases and 41% of new HIV infections.
