Homecoming brings old and new traditions together

laremont High Schools 2010 Homecoming honored the past and celebrated the present.

Representatives from former CHS graduating classes were invited to attend this years homecoming festivities last Friday and enjoyed a parade, alumni reception and a football game. This reminds us of the old days at Claremont High, said 1961 graduate Donna Heavyside Westlund. We normally get together every 5 years [as a class]. Were just very proud of the city and very proud of our school. Ms. Westlund was joined by fellow Class of 1961 alumni Ruth Dail Dworak, Sharon Esterley and Sandy Grady at Fridays parade. The group reminisced about their days as high school seniors. Celebrating the 50th anniversary of their class this year, the class of 1961 has been named the Golden Grads. The homecoming parade was an annual event 50 years ago. Ms. Dworak felt honored to be invited to take part in the tradition 5 decades later. Its wonderful that were remembered and were invited, she said. We werent just the Golden Grads but we were also El Robles [Intermediate School] first class. Crowning of new king and queen CHS varsity defensive lineman Brandon Tuliaupupu was crowned the homecoming king last Friday just minutes before the parade began at Memorial Park. The rest of the male homecoming court included Jake Bartman, Colin Domonoske, Eric Flores and Steven Watts. Brandon is the 2nd member of the Tuliaupupu family to be named homecoming king in the past 2 years. His brother, Taylor, was crowned homecoming king in 2009. The younger Tuliaupupu is also a member of the CHS Concert Choir. He hopes to play football for a 4-year college or university on a full ride scholarship after graduating in June 2011.

Claremont High School senior Brandon Tuliaupupu, center, waves to a friend immediately following a ceremony where he was named the homecoming king on Friday in Memorial Park.

Football was Brandons focus last Friday even when he was wearing his crown and robe. Im just focusing on the game, he said after being asked his thoughts on becoming homecoming king. Claremont went on to defeat Ayala, 42-13, to bring Fridays events to a successful end. At halftime, CHS senior Jayme Ung was crowned homecoming queen. The female homecoming court also included princesses Kay Dorn, Margaret Gallagher, Alanna Samuelson and Taylor Ward. Jayme is the captain of the CHS Dance Team, the senior class representative for the schools Associated Student Body (ASB) and a member of the Claremont

Teen Committee. Being able to share her crowning moment with her fellow dance team and ASB members made the experience more special for the CHS senior. At first I didnt know it was me but then the 2 girls next to me said its you, Jayme recalled. I looked out and saw the dance team screaming and the other ASB members were excited for me. It was a big honor to be recognized like this. I think this is pretty high up there for me and something that Ill remember for the rest of my life.

Historic Class of 2011 While the Class of 1961 celebrated its golden anniversary, this years graduating class of 2011 will take part in Claremont Highs 101st commencement this June. According to CHS Assistant Principal June Hilton, historic documents show the Class of 2010 to be the schools 100th graduating class.

Ms. Hilton also said that this school year marks the 100th anniversary of Claremont High School having its own building. The first building opened in 1911. No 100th anniversary events have been announced as of time of print. CHS senior Steven Frazer enjoys being a part of Claremont history. The 100-year celebration is really cool to be part of, he said. It makes you feel that much more important.

itzer College is the top liberal arts college in the nation for Fulbright scholarships, according to The Chronicle of Higher Education. Pitzers 23 Fulbright scholars in the 2009-10 academic year earned the college the top spot in the Chronicles Fulbright program report for undergraduate colleges. Sponsored by the U.S. government, the Fulbright program aims to promote understanding between the people of the United States and other countries through teaching and research programs conducted by awardees. Each year, 8000 scholarships are awarded to U.S. and international students, academics and professionals, said Alina Romanowski, deputy assistant secretary for academic programs at U.S. Department of State. This is a really good way of deepening understanding and building ties between the U.S. and other nations, Ms.

Romanowski said. Many of the relationships built during these programs will last a lifetime. Pitzer students are traveling far and wide to complete their Fulbright projects. Among the list of countries are Malta, Cyprus, Columbia, Moldova, Malaysia and South Korea. Pitzer College President Laura Skandera Trombley attributed her institutes success in Fulbright scholarships to the high rate of students studying abroad and its emphasis on community engagement. Were graduating global citizens here, said Pitzer College President Laura Skandera Trombley. Weve always had a commitment as part of our core values for intercultural engagement and diversity so I think this honor attests to the strength of our programs and efforts. Last year, 74 percent of Pitzer College seniors graduated after taking part in a study abroad program compared with 2

percent nationally and Pitzer students earned over 100,000 hours of community engagement. Ms. Skandera Trombley added that many underrepresented groups receiving Fulbright scholarships were among Pitzers 23 awardees. The International Institute of Education identifies 3 underrepresented groups as men, science majors and students of color. Pitzer Colleges awardees included 8 men, 2 science majors, 9 students of color (3 Asian America, 3 Latinas and 3 African American) and 2 non-traditional age students. This is the seventh consecutive year Pitzer College ranks as the national leader in Fulbright Fellowships per thousand students. In Pitzers 46 year history, students and alumni have earned 100 Fulbright scholarships that sent them to 46 different countries, Ms. Skandera Trombley said. Tony Krickl

Kurtis Redman, 12, empties his Halloween candy into a box at orthodontist Dr. Dougals Browns office on Monday in Claremont. For 10 years Dr. Brown has paid local children a dollar per pound of candy they give up on the first business day after Halloween. He is most interested in buying back the sticky types of candy that tend to damage braces. The candy will be donated to Operation Gratitude which provides American troops with sweets that they give to children while working in foreign countries.

Wolfpack tames Bulldogs in Homecoming romp

o Sierra League team has been able to find a solution to Claremonts Daniel Kessler-Aaron Dockery tandem. Ayala was the Wolfpacks latest victim last Friday.

Dockery accounted for 257 of Kesslers 361 passing yards as the senior receivers 14 catches and 3 touchdowns gave CHS the edge in a 42-13 smashing of the Bulldogs in Claremonts 2010 Homecoming game. Weve been working hard all summer and we knew that we couldnt take Ayala lightly even though they were the underdogs, Dockery said. We had to come out with fire. Neither team could score for the games first 19 minutes. But Claremont (7-1, 3-0) saw an opening midway through the 2nd quarter when Kessler completed a pass to Dockery for a 50yard gain. Three plays later, the duo hooked up again as Dockery caught a 20yard pass to put the Pack ahead, 7-0. My quickness is advantageous when I get into the open field, Dockery said. People have told me that Im a great route runner. I think it comes from all the years I played in the Jr. All American football league. Starting at the Claremont 37-yard-line, Kessler quickly moved the Pack down the field with throws to Salim Cleghorne and Dockery. On the 4th play of the drive, the senior quarterback hit Jackson Reeder for a 9-yard touchdown and a 140 lead at the half. Claremont High School athletic officials attend to Salim Cleghorne after Kesslers 16-yard strike to Dockery the player was injured in a hard tackle during Friday nights homecoming extended Claremonts lead to 21-0 with game. The game was delayed about 30 minutes as Salim was checked 8:48 left in the 3rd quarter. But Ayala ral- over. He suffered a concussion and sprained neck and was taken to the lied back with a one-yard TD run by hospital for treatment.

Ryan Kent and a 9-yard scoring trot late in the quarter to slice the Wolfpacks lead to 21-13. After 2 straight drives ended in punts, CHS came alive again in the 4th quarter when an Ayala punt gave the Pack favorable field position at the Bulldog 32. Claremont made it down to the 3-yard-line before Reeder leapt in the air and pulled down his 2nd touchdown catch to give the Pack a 28-13 advantage. The senior receiver finished with 3 catches for 34 yards. The Pack put the game out of reach with 2 oneplay drives that concluded with a 58-yard touchdown reception by Dockery and a 20-yard scoring run by Ryan Abasta. Kessler finished the contest with 5 touchdown passes. We threw the ball really well, said CHS coach

Mike Collins. Daniel [Kessler] was incredible and the receivers were awesome. Dockery has been a key player for us even when [Tanner] Kuramata was healthy. All of our receivers are doing very well. We do miss Kuramata but our receivers have stepped up. Claremont suffered a scare during Fridays game when Cleghorne lay motionless on the field after a play during the 3rd quarter. He was taken away in an emergency vehicle nearly 30 minutes after the play. Cleghorne was diagnosed with a mild concussion and neck sprain. He was released from the hospital around 1:30 a.m. on Saturday morning. They told me that I needed to come out this week but that I should be ready for next weeks game, Cleghorne said while wearing a neck brace. I still have some headaches but theyre much better than they were on Saturday. South Hills and Damien are Claremonts remaining 2 opponents in Sierra League play this season. The Pack will be playing both games away from CHS Stadium, beginning with the Huskies this Friday in Covina. Though CHS is a playoff bound team this year, Coach Collins believes this years Wolfpack is very similar to last years team. We were playing the same way last year but this year, were getting by in the close games, he said. We have pretty much the same team but were more of a senior-led team this year. Were just reaping the benefits of working hard over the summer.

A course in music and miracles in Claremont

by John Pixley

ould it get any better than this? I wondered one evening last month as I sat in Little Bridges listening to the chiming, soaring a cappella voices. The women of Anonymous 4yes, there are four of themsang a medieval Ladymass, a Mass comprised of songs honoring the Virgin Mary, and then a series of old-time American spirituals and gospel songs. The singing was rich and ethereal and all the more lovely in the jewel-box hall.

went, not only because I got to discover Mr. Cubek literally, and as a friend wondered later, How did they get him?but also because the Dvorak symphony, which is actually one of my favorites, seemed so fresh, almost new. At the end of the concert, it appeared that Mr. Cubek was at least as surprised and pleased as was the audience. The fact is, though, that I am constantly surprised and pleased by the musical offerings at The Colleges. Yes, there are outstanding highlightsthe Anonymous 4, the Cubek debutsbut the quantity and the quality of The Colleges concerts is pretty impressive. That these performances are almost always free is all but staggering. This is truly a musical feast. More than that, its an education. Each time Im at one these concerts, reading the often generous program notes (I have to say that Lamkins notes were better, richer than Cubeks) and listening to the music, I feel like Im taking a terrific class, a wonderful course. Over the years, I have learned more and more about different composers, about musical styles and techniques, about how a piece of music can be played in different ways. I have also learned about instruments (gamelan, tabla) and about styles and genres (African, Hindustan) about which I didnt know. An example of how rich this musical feastand educationis is the fact the Claremont Concert Orchestra isnt the only orchestra at The Colleges. Pomona College has its own symphony orchestra, which had a concert earlier in the month. Each of these orchestras put on two concerts each semester. And this doesnt includes the Claremont Symphony Orchestra, the community ensemble which performs

Whats more, the concert by the world-renown group was free, and it was minutes from my house. Like I said, it couldnt have gotten any better. Or could it? It turns out, as I discovered a week and a half after seeing Anonymous 4 when I attended a concert by the Claremont Concert Orchestra at Garrison Theater, it turns out we now have our own dude. Right here in Claremont. No, not Gustavo Dudamel, the heralded leader of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, but, David Cubek, the new conductor of the college orchestra, replacing the stalwart Michael Lamkin who retired this Spring, is from Venezuela and is young and fresh-faced. And Mr. Cubeks hair is too short to fly around, and he wasnt trained in El Sisterna, but he has done some conducting for the famed youth music training program, and he has noticeable energy and boyish charm on the podium. The program had an American theme, appropriate for a South American conductor making his debut with this ensemble of mainly students from Scripps, Pitzer, Claremont McKenna and Harvey Mudd College. I was thinking of not going, because I was having a busy weekend and have attended countless performances of Dvorak Symphony No. 9, From the New World, which was billed with a symphonic suite based on Gershwins Porgy and Bess. But Im glad I

about six times a year. Think about it. At least 3 orchestras (dont forget the high school, El Roble, etc.) in a town of Claremonts size. Something of a miracle. Its really no surprise that Ive heard the New World symphony performed live so many times over the years. How lucky I should be! How lucky we should all be! Pomona College and the group of other colleges also each have their own choirsbasically a larger concert choir and a smaller chamber or glee group. This means another 3 concerts each semester at the very least, sometimes in combination with the orchestras. This is only the beginning, though. Just in terms of singing, Pomona College has the student-run a capella Blue (men) and White (women) groups. (Who says Glee is a new phenomena?) Pomona also has a number of other faculty-led student enclaves, such as the concert band and the gamelan and African drumming ensembles. The other group of colleges has put together a mariachi group in recent years. Then there are all the student, faculty and guest artist recitals, whether they be solo performances, string quartets or all kinds of other groupings. This semester, when The Colleges were in session, there was at least one concert each weekend, and I sometimes have had to choose between two concerts going on at the same time. On Sunday afternoon, there was a concert featuring bassoon and piano at Pomona College and a piano recital at Scripps College, and, on another Sunday afternoon earlier this fall, I went to a baroque music concert at Pomona when I could have seen a string quartet at Scripps. Theres also plenty of music during the week. Anonymous 4 performed on a Tuesday evening, and, just last week, I attended a concert at the Athenaeum at Claremont McKenna College honoring the bicentennial of Robert Schumanns birth. Remember, the great majority of The College conJOHN PIXLEY continues on the next page

Ellen L. Click
Longtime Claremont resident Ellen Laura Click died on October 27, 2010 at Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center after a brief illness. She was 80. For 27 years, Mrs. Click taught kindergarten at Roynon Elementary School in La Verne, earning widespread respect and admiration for her dedication to providing quality education to young children. Beyond the walls of her classroom, she frequently tutored children as they learned to read. She will be remembered by the many children fortunate enough to have their start in life in her gracious kindergarten classroom, commented her daughter-in-law, Emily Click. For almost 60 years, Mrs. Click was married to Ralph Click, and she was the treasured mother of 3 children and 5 grandchildren. Many persons in the community knew Mrs. Click through her activities

Fashion can be difficult. Its beautiful, artsy and you meet all these wonderful people, but because its all about looks and image, it takes a certain part of your life. I really had to think about this, she said. When I came back, I did it on my own terms.

Inspiring Ms. Valencia to operate a dress shop that is oh-so-much more than a dress shop are the spiritual traditions she practicesthe ways of her ancestors as well as those entered into as an adult seeker. Of Native American heritage, she brings ceremony and song to The Little Dress Shop, performing a Native ritual prior to each days opening.
In a voice pure and enchanting, Ms. Valencia sang a traditional fire song to keep the light bright and strong in spirit, being and soul; and also a song of protection to summon blessings from her ancestors. As she sang, used a set of feathers to wave incense throughout the boutique, gracefully paying attention to every nook and cranny. I like to set the vibrations so all who enter feel the joy and love that I feel here, she said. I also want the store to know that I love it and Im grateful for it. Open to and interested in other spiritual traditions, practices and philosophies, Ms. Valencia recently began what she referred to as her Buddhist journey, and now meditates daily and learns the teachings at the Middle Land Chan Monastery in Pomona. Not too long ago, she underwent the Buddhist Refuge Ceremony, which indicates ones intention to follow the Buddhist path. Part of the traditional ritual involves a symbolic cutting of hair, with many Westerners opting for just a lock: Ms. Valencia, with hair past her waistline in characteristic Native style, cut almost everything off. My medicine is Native, thats who I am. I am taking [Buddhism] as a way of life, she said. Describing herself as a spiritual traveler, Ms. Valencia dreams of traveling the world, venturing high in remote mountains and deep in faraway valleys to learn and participate in spiritual traditions of other cultures. For now, here at home in Claremont, she interweaves them moment-to-moment, embodying respect and tolerance for all belief systems. Earlier this month, she marveled at how life can indeed be a blend of many traditions when she was invited to

That morning, I thought, here I am in Buddhist meditation, later going to sing a Native song at the lecture of a Catholic priest at a Congregational church. In the serene beauty of The Little Dress Shop, and in her life, Ms. Valencia wants most of all to be of service to peoples inner lives. But also a spirited entrepreneur, she wants to bring delight to peoples outer lives, helping them find just the right slinky or sassy or cutesy or classy dress. And with the latter waning during the current economic woes, it is the former that will buoy her along until better times. With how it is right now, if I didnt love it so much, it would be difficult. FOR WHOM THE BELL TOLLS The Smith Memorial Tower at Pomona College will again toll hourly after a unanimous vote by the colleges student government, the Associated Students of Pomona College. The chimes will toll on the 47th minute from 9:47 a.m. to 5:47 p.m., Monday through Friday after the inauguration of the campus tradition tomorrow, Thursday, November 4 at 5:15 p.m. The 125-foot Smith Tower, located next to the Norton, Clark and Walker residence halls, was designed by architect John Rex and built in 1961 for a total cost of approximately $150,000.
