Specialty and Exit Exam

Your HESI scores range from 0 to over 1,000, and can be as high as 1,500 (depending on the difficulty level of the exam). An acceptable level of performance is 850. However, the recommended level of performance is 900 and above for all scores provided. Each school is responsible for establishing their specific standards related to outcome measures of acceptable scores. Many schools choose a certain overall score as a benchmark for progression, and such benchmarks are set at the discretion of the schools faculty and administrators. However, when preparing for the NCLEX, it is recommended that students seriously remediate any subject area category in which they obtained a score of less than 850. All test items are weighted according to their difficulty level. If you answer more difficult items correctly, you will get more credit than if you answer less difficult test items correctly. Because of this scoring method, it is highly probable that two students answering the same number of test items correctly will receive different scores because such scores depend not only on how many test items the student answered correctly, but also on which test items the student answered correctly. Your score reflects application of the HESI Predictability Model (HPM) to your overall score and each subject area score. Research studies have found the HPM to be highly accurate in predicting NCLEX success. Your conversion score is a weighted percentage score that considers the average difficulty of the exam and the average difficulty of the test items you answered. Based on your facultys use of this exam, the conversion score may be used as a portion of your course grade. The HESI score is a better predictor of NCLEX success than the conversion score because it reflects application of the HPM in its calculation, whereas the conversion score does not. Colored graphs depicting your scores on various subject area categories are

provided throughout this report. The horizontal lines within these graphs are set at the Acceptable Level (850) and the Recommended Level (900).
Nursing Students and the HESI Test The HESI test is the nationwide standardized test of choice for nursing students. This means that almost anyone wanting to become a nurse will be required to take the HESI exam. The HESI test is used to gage a nursing student's ability to pass the National Council of Licensing Examination. Nursing schools with high averages of students unable to pass the licensing examination are subject to inquiry and can be closed. This is why many nursing schools have been requiring students to pass the exit HESI exam before allowing them to graduate. The HESI test is scored in points, not percentages. The points needed to graduate vary from each nursing school, but a common range is 825-900 points. Nursing students are expected to cover the costs of taking the HESI exam. Some schools include the price of the HESI test in tuition, while others expect students to pay when they register for the exam. Taking the HESI Test To take the HESI test, nursing students will first need to register on-line or by mail. Then they will be issued testing time, date and location specifics. Most nursing schools require that the test by taken at an on-campus, computer testing center, in the presence of a proctor. Testers should bring ID, as the proctor will ask for it. HESI exam takers will not be allowed to use calculators not approved by the proctor. Many schools allow test takers to use the calculator provided in the computer. The HESI test is timed and students will be given four hours to complete the nurse exam. Nursing students should answer all questions when taking the HESI test, as they will not be allowed to go back and re-answer questions. HESI test results are printed out as soon as the exam is finished. The HESI tests are milestones that students must past on their way to becoming nurses. The preparation that the HESI exam provides for the nursing licensing examination is invaluable to both students and nursing schools.
