This document has been created to provide a brief summary of the key features of the Student Portal. It is aimed at students who are unfamiliar with the Student Portal. INTRODUCTION TO YOUR STUDENT PORTAL


Your University of Melbourne Student Portal has been created to make it easier for you to complete your studies, whilst also enhancing your Melbourne Experience. As a student, you can use your Student Portal to access your subject materials online, check your student email, access library services, complete administration requirements, find out about other services offered which are not directly related to your studies and much, much more. Some useful features include: Easy access to your administrative and study-related information, allowing you to view and update your personal details online to ensure you dont miss any important University correspondence. The Information Directory helps you to locate administrative and study-related resources, policies and information, as well as services to enhance your Melbourne Experience. Access to your student email account, allowing you to send and receive email messages. Access to your student notices, allowing you to see the notices relevant to you as well as sending your own notices. Access to your own Personal Links. Save your favourite websites in the Quick Links portlet of the Home page in your Student Portal so you can access them from any computer. Links to your subject learning tool pages (e.g. LMS) are conveniently located in one place. Access to todays weather: a useful tool to help you plan your day. Front page summaries of your email, notices and library accounts for quick access. Access to library services online. Conduct catalogue searches, view past exam papers and find other key services from one location. Remember, you can access your Student Portal from any computer within the University or off-campus at anytime, provided you have an Internet connection and a University of Melbourne email account.

Additional functionality is progressively added to your Student Portal. As this happens, please feel free to submit comments/feedback about the portal by clicking the Portal Feedback button located at the top right-hand corner of your portal.

GLOSSARY OF TERMS
Admin Online direct access to the administrative services and information that you need as a student. Use this section of your portal to complete online functions such as updating enrolment or contact details. Information Directory - serves to address the how do I? questions common amongst students. You can use this directory when you dont know how to do something or what resources or functions you need to do them or you need to find a student service. Learning Tools online applications which assist in the teaching of your subjects such as LMS. Notices System allows user to locate, view and maintain official university information in a personalised manner as well as submit notices to student-specific cohort groups. Personal Links You can create personal links within your portal which act in the same way as your Favourites in web browsers. You can access your stored links from any computer with Internet access. Portlet Sections of a Tab containing relevant information and functions for a particular area of University life. Examples of portlets on the Home Tab include Course and subjects, News and Weather, and Quick Links. Tab Pages of your Student Portal which can be accessed via the tab navigation bar on each portal page. Examples include Home, Admin, and Info.

LOGGING IN TO YOUR STUDENT PORTAL


logging in to your Student Portal is easy! Open a web browser (such as Internet Explorer or Firefox) and enter the URL in the address bar: o http://portal.unimelb.edu.au/

You can also access your Student Portal via the University of Melbournes website by clicking Current Students. This will take you to your Student Portal login page. In the text boxes, enter your single sign-on username and password (this is the same as your central University student email username and password), then click Login. Your username will not have a dot in it. For example, "j.bloggs" will not work; this is your email alias. You can set up a new account, view your username, set or change your password from the Accounts Registration System page. You will need to have your student card with you when you activate your account or change your password. If you are having difficulties logging in, you can access help by clicking need help logging in?

MINIMUM SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS


to use the Student Portal you need: PC users: Windows 2000, XP or Vista Mac users: MacOS X 10.3.9 Hardware: 64 MB of RAM, 50-100 MB of free memory space Javascript enabled Cookies enabled If accessing the Student Portal from outside the University, you will need a minimum 56 K modem

LOGGING OUT OF YOUR STUDENT PORTAL


it is important to logout of your Student Portal correctly: To ensure the security of your personal information, it is important that you logout of your Student Portal correctly. To log out correctly, you need to click:

This button is located in the top right-hand corner of your Student Portal. If your Student Portal session is idle for 55 minutes, you will be prompted to reactivate the session with a log out warning pop-up box. If you press OK, your session will be extended. If you press Cancel you will be logged out. If you do not make a selection, you will be automatically logged out after 5 minutes.

NAVIGATING THROUGH YOUR STUDENT PORTAL

To keep your Student Portal up to date, click on the tabs rather than clicking the forward and back icons in the navigation toolbar of your browser.

HOME TAB
view a snapshot of your online life at the University The Home tab is the first page you will see once you have successfully logged into your portal. From this page, you can access all the online services you require as part of your University life.
view a quick snapshot of your current emails, notices and library accounts / borrowing alerts get quick access to online admin functions

navigate through the portal using these tabs

you can save and store your favourite links for easy access no matter what computer you use!

create your own notice by clicking on the manage tab and select submit new notice notices will be automatically deleted once the expiry date for that notice has passed selected notices can be printed or deleted once opened.
