Materials Needed

-Piano -Writing title and lyrics of song -Drums -History of African drumming -Other percussion instruments

Student accommodations Allow students to participate as much as they are comfortable in improvisation activity and repeat activities until everyone is at the same learning point.

Vocal Warm-ups/Instrumental Warm-ups -Rhythmic pattern echos on drums -Learning song on doo then lyrics

Vocal Focus/Instrumental Focus -Drum circle together and improvisation -Singing Harvest Song

Motivation -Work together to learn new seasonal song, and if we do well and focus, we will each get a turn to play on the drums.

Lesson Development (motivation modeling, guided practice, transitions, Blooms Taxonomy) 1 Body percussion activity as a group 2 Learn Harvest Song - first just words, then on doo then together 3 Set students at drums in groups. Give rhythmic echos to group. Make sure everyone has a turn. 4 Go around room and give rhythmic shadows to students one by one, rest of students tapping the patterns on the edge of their drums to practice. 5 Have students keep steady tempo on drums, counting in groups of eight first out loud and then in their heads. 6 Have students review rainforest rhythm together and play in he eight beat phrase. Review two tones of the drum that we know (bass and tone). 6 Play rainforest for eight beats and on the following one play a bass and rest for eight beats. Have students bounce the eight off beats to keep time. Setting up for improvisation. 7 Improv during their quiet beats to demonstrate. Allow the students to each take a turn around the room during the four quiet beats. Take turns around the room.

Listening Experiences (Attentive, Engaged, Enactive) 1 Listening to my rhythmic patterns on drum and repeating 2 Listening to each others improvisations 3 Singing/Listening to Harvest Song

Total Participation Techniques The improvisation activity on the drums around the room while the rest of the class is keeping time.

Summary, closure Reviewing reasons for improvisation and discussing what is important during an activity such as this. Student Needs

Assessments -Listening to them sing row by row -Listening to individual echos and improvisations throughout class period

Resources Music included Rhythmic patterns for body percussion activity

Enrichment/follow-up -Reviewing song each class to add comfort for every student -Begin improvisation again next class and see if the students remember the form of our activity.

Self-Evaluation

-Assign just one rhythm or one -Noting how well the students recall the pattern to students who are words to their song less comfortable improvising or -Noticing if the students are sure of which are moving a little slower with rhythms fit within a measure while the process. improvising.
