v. ABSTRACT Title Awareness and Utilization of the University of Cebu Banilad Library Services Author GROUP 1A Section R Introduction In the most essential sense, the school library exists to cope up with the technological advancements and the equating the needs of students to perform better in class. In a world that is increasingly becoming more competitive and comprehensive, our knowledge and ability should extent on how to utilize things around us. There are a lot of ways and means that exists, on that, awareness implies to be more cognizant on certain information. Nursing, being a dynamic profession, seeks more evolution to furthermore establish its identity as a profession and to continue struggle for the betterment in the efficacy of its practice to clients and community. Nursing indeed is a life changing profession with the hectic schedules that needs to juggle the time for lectures, in studying lessons, accomplishing requirements both in RLE duty and in lecture classes, as well as the responsibilities at home. In these cases, library is very important to student nurses. The facilities and services offered by the library aids in accomplishing requirements.

vi. Library plays an important part to the student life. It provides opportunities on how the students could benefit the facilities for their own good. The library being the closest place to approach, the nursing students can update new trends and discoveries important in nursing education. Due to the increasing population of nursing students, the University of Cebu - Banilad had come up to the expansion of the new main library to accommodate the needs and demands of nursing students and other departments as well. Having more accommodation capacities means more students can go and utilize the library services offered. The researchers have witnessed and observed the improvement of the newly expanded main library in terms of their accommodation, in which it can now somehow accommodate more number of students as compared from the old main library. But still, it cannot

accommodate the growing population of the student nurses in the said university. The researchers choose this study because of the reason; since the library is very important to student nurses, they should be aware of the facilities and services in the library and to utilize it as well. The study aims to assess the awareness level of the nursing students and the facilities and services offered by the library. The researchers

vii. conducted this study to unravel and understand the awareness and utilization of the services and facilities offered by the school library. Thus, an enhanced orientation program may be proposed. The Problem This study determined the awareness and utilization of library services as perceived by the student nurses.

Specifically, the study seeks to answer the following questions:

1. What is the profile of the respondents in terms of year level? 2. What is the respondents level of awareness on the library services? 3. What is the level of utilization of the library services among student nurses? 4. Is there a significant relationship between: 4.1. Profile and level of awareness 4.2. Profile and level of utilization 4.3. Level of awareness and utilization of library services 5. Based on the findings of the student, an enhanced orientation program may be proposed.

Viii. Research Methodology This study utilized a non experimental descriptive method of research. It determined the awareness and utilization level of each year level of the nursing students enrolled in University of CebuBanilad school year 2008-2009, about the library together with its facilities and services. The design is geared towards profiling, scaling and description of relationship between variables. This research is conducted at University of Cebu-Banilad Campus. It is located at Governor Cuenco Avenue, Banilad, Cebu City. This is a nine (9) floor building with different courses offered. The respondents are randomly selected from among the following targets: (1) must be a student nurse from level I, level II, level III, and level IV (2) officially enrolled for first semester SY 2008-2009. This research makes use of a questionnaire as a statistical tool to determine relationships and responses are scaled according to the appropriate statistical treatment. Likert Scale was used as a tool to assess and determine the attitude and personality of the respondents. The data being obtained were divided into three categories: (1) The respondent's profile that include year level, (2) Level of awareness on the facilities being provided (3) Extent of utilization of library facilities

ix. Summary of Findings 1. The respondents of the study are the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th year student nurses with 96 respondents from 1st year, 92 respondents from the 2nd year, 104 respondents from 3rd year, and 108 respondents from 4th year. 2. Most of the respondents are aware on the library services specifically from 1st year, 2nd year, 3rd year and 4th year. 3. Majority of the respondents occasionally utilize the library services. 4. 1.1 There is no significant relationship between the year level and the level of awareness of the library services. 1.2 There is a significant relationship between the year level and the level of utilization of the library services. 1.3 There is a significant relationship between the level of awareness and utilization on the library services. Conclusions Based on the findings of the study, the researchers had identified the following conclusion: 1. The year level of the respondents does not affect the level of awareness on the library services.

x. 2. The higher the year level, the more respondents utilized on the library services. 3.The higher the level of awareness, the greater level of utilization on the library services. Recommendations Based on the result of the study, the following are identified: 1. A reorientation program should be given to higher levels. 2. Based on the reorientation program, a parallel study should be made to re-evaluate the student's level of awareness and utilization of the library services. 3. Additional bulletin board inside the library for the students to be aware and update on the library's latest services and materials such as books, online resources and etc. 4. During library orientation, movie viewing should be given emphasis. Viewing about cultural subjects, nursing procedures and educational movies should be given emphasis during library re-orientation. 5. The library could provide additional computer units and lessen the payment in using Internet services to be available to all students.

1 CHAPTER I THE PROBLEM AND ITS SCOPE INTRODUCTION Rationale of the Study The school library serves as a place for students to do independent work, use computers, equipment and research materials. In the most essential sense, the school library exists to cope up with the technological advancements and the equating the needs of students to perform better in class. In a world that is increasingly becoming more competitive and comprehensive, our knowledge and ability should extent on how to utilize things around us. There are a lot of ways and means that exists, on that, awareness implies to be more cognizant on certain

information. Nursing, being a dynamic profession, seeks more evolution to furthermore establish its identity as a profession and to continue struggle for the betterment in the efficacy of its practice to clients and community. Nursing indeed is a life changing profession with the hectic schedules that needs to juggle the time for lectures, in studying

2 lessons, accomplishing requirements both in RLE duty and in lecture classes, as well as the responsibilities at home. In these cases, library is very important to nursing students. The facilities and services offered by the library aids in accomplishing requirements. But still, it cannot

accommodate the growing population of the nursing students in the

3 said university. There is also a need to control the behavior of the students inside the library such as being noisy which causes distraction to the other students who are studying. Some students are using the library as a place where they can wait for their next class or just simply chatting to talk with their friends. While working on this research, the researchers have difficulty in looking for resources and other references since the library have only limited books available. The researchers also have the chance to see the list of services offered by the library and admit that the services listed are not familiar to them and are not aware that it is absolutely found inside the -University of Cebu Banilad Library. The researchers choose this study because of the reason; since the library is very important to nursing students, they should be aware of the facilities and services in the library and to utilize it as well. But unfortunately most of the students are not aware of the facilities and services being offered by the library. The study aims to assess the awareness level of the nursing students and the facilities and services offered by the library. The researchers conducted this study to unravel and understand

4 the awareness and utilization of the services and facilities offered by the school library. proposed. Theoretical Background In Cognitive psychology, it entails the study of all mental activities related to acquire, storing, and using knowledge. It also studies the operation of the mind, particularly functions such as perception, attention, consciousness(awareness) and memory. The primary focus of the research study in cognitive psychology Thus, an enhanced orientation program may be

emphasizes the internal processes and structures processes inferred through the observation of behavior. The focus on the mental structures and processes in cognitive psychology does not explicitly indicate its philosophical position

(http://en.freepedia.org/Cognitive_science.html, 2007).

However, the internal representation of learners can also be regarded as a subjective construction of integrating incoming

information and the existing knowledge structures. The central issues that interest cognitive psychologists include the internal mechanism of human thought and the processes of knowing. Cognitive psychologists have attempted to find out the answers to mental structures, such as

5 what is stored and how it is stored, and to mental processes concerning how the integration and retrieval of information is operated. The theoretical assumptions in cognitive psychology lend instructional systems a hand in the design of efficient processing strategies for the learners to acquire knowledge

(http://en.freepedia.org/Cognitive_science.html, 2007). In Anderson's (Atomic Components of Thought R) theory which is a unitary theory of cognition and has its origins in human associative memory has proposed a distinction between procedural knowledge and declarative knowledge in which an architecture of cognition is modeled to explain how the process of acquisition can be tuned to the statistical structure of the environment. The current goal acts as a filter to select relevant productions. There are two long-term memory stores: a declarative and a procedural memory. The knowledge in the

declarative memory such as facts and goals, is represented in terms of chunks. At the symbolic level, chunks are structured as a semantic network (http://www.personal.psu.edu/users/w/x/wxh139/cognitive_1.htm, 2007).

6 On the other hand, the knowledge in the procedural memory is represented as production rules in forms of condition-action pairs, in which the flow of control passes from one production to another when the actions of one production create the conditions needed for another production to take place. It is these production systems that provide the basis for a unitary theory of cognition. The selected production and the current goal will influence together the retrieval of information via their connections to declarative memory. Finally, the contents of retrieved nodes are used to update the current goal according to the production's action specification

(http://www.personal.psu.edu/users/w/x/wxh139/cognitive_1.htm, 2007). Anderson (1985) has three main influences for the modern development of cognitive psychology one of these is information processing approach. The information-processing sees human

cognition as a series of stages through which information passes sequentially. The cognitive theories propose constructs describing information processing mechanisms. The questions about how humans process information, pick up information from the environment, store information in memory, retrieve information from memory, and send information back to the environment are under investigation. Both

people and computers store information and retrieve it when 7 applicable to current tasks; both are limited in the amount of information they can process at a given time; both transform information to produce new information; both return information to the environment (http://en.freepedia.org/Cognitive_science.html,

2007). Broadbent (1958) proposed a general model of the human information-processing system. This information processing model presented the basic mechanisms: three main memory storages in which the information is operated on, and the processes of

transforming the information from input to output within each storage and from output to input between these storages. The model suggested that the processing is a fixed serial order from one memory storage to the next, and voluntary control of the system was represented by a selective-attention device and by information feedback loops from the high-level processing system to earlier processing stages. Short-term memory can be thought of as conscious memory because, in addition to holding information, it allows information to be manipulated, interpreted and transformed. The new information in short-term memory,by subjection to further processing, may be transferred to and made part of long-term memory.

8 Long-term memory is a relatively unlimited and permanent repository of information. Long term memory stores for later use of information (http://www.personal.psu.edu/users/w/x/wxh139/cognitive_1.htm, 2007). The information in terms processing of stages model and the highlights processes, the and basic the

mechanisms

representation and storage of information: Three main stages in which the information is operated on: sensory memory, short-term memory (temporary working memory), and long-term memory; the processes of transforming the information from input to output within each stage and from output to input between these stages, e.g. attention/pattern recognition, encoding and retrieval and representation and storage of information 2007). Patrons may not know how to fully use the library's resources. This can be due to some individuals' unease in approaching a staff member. The greatest impact, though are the ways in which a library's content is displayed or accessed. An antiquated or clumsy search (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cognitive_psychology,

system or a staff unwilling or untrained to engage its patrons will limit a library's usefulness. In United States public libraries, beginning in 9 the 19th century these problems drove the emergence of the library instruction movement, which advocated library user education. One of the early leaders was John Cotton Dana. The basic form of library instruction is generally known as information literacy

(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Library#Library_use, 2001). The process of becoming informed is characterized by notions of what is likely to be understood by the people to be served, what ancillary services might facilitate this, and what the limitations of the service are with respect to fostering beneficial knowledge and/or diminishing harmful ignorance. Much of this is largely implicit as in the development of "appropriate" collections of documents and ancillary aids such as dictionaries. Other aspects have been made more explicit in writings on library service in relation to "social epistemology" and "public knowledge." The demand for library services has a substantial literature based mainly on surveys of use (which is not the same as the demand) and focusing mainly on how things are at a given point in time rather than on the dynamics of demand (which would be more useful). More tractable aspects yield consistently reported findings which can and sometimes do form the basis for planning

(http://sunsite.berkeley.edu/Literature/Library/Services/chapter5.html , 2005). 10 There is no doubt that a centralized collection of resources managed and maintained by a qualified teacher-librarian is costeffective and pedagogically sound. Teacher-librarians take great care in choosing good quality resources and also ones that have multiple uses within the school library program. They have effective systems for looking after those resources and being sure everyone has equal access to them. They also provide a school with a much wider range of resources than any educational system could be expected to provide to individual classrooms. This is true of traditional resources and newer electronic resources

(http://www.upei.ca/~fac_ed/projects/handbook/benefits.htm, 2006). When teachers and teacher-librarians work together to plan and teach together, there is the obvious benefit of adding another teacher to the team and of using a wider variety of teaching approaches. So the two could plan together and then teach together by splitting a class into two groups and lower the teacher/pupil ratio. They could design and build learning stations and have students work

independently while they act as facilitators of learning or work with individual students who need help. They can assist each other with the

evaluation of students' performance, by conferencing with students and applying many other creative instructional approaches. This has 11 emerged as one of the great benefits of having a school library program (http://www.upei.ca/~fac_ed/projects/handbook/benefits.htm, 2006). Since so much of what we do with technology is to access information, create our own information and share or present what we have learned, it has meant that the information skills developed by the school library program are even more relevant that ever. Not everyone needs all of the CD-ROM materials if it is accessible in the school library. Using the Internet can develop within the context of planned resource-based learning with every student having equal opportunity. Since the use of these technologies is essential to the work of the teacher-librarian today, this educator becomes a leader in helping all teachers and students use these technologies in meaningful ways. Every educator is concerned with the development of all aspects of students' literacy. From language arts, mathematics and all subject areas, through to information literacy, critical literacy, media and visual literacy, there are many aspects to this demanding task of making students interested in learning and also motivated to continue learning long after they leave the public school system. School libraries offer a

real opportunity to assist in this work. They provide open and accessible learning environments where students and teachers can 12 access the most complete resource collection available to them, where the wider community is easily accessible and where a love for literature, culture and global interdependence is understood and promoted (http://www.upei.ca/~fac_ed/projects/handbook/benefits.htm, 2006). Students will need their information literacy skills and strategies long after they leave the public system. They will always need access to a wide range of resources and they will need to know how to learn if they are to keep pace with the demands of work and life in the future. We will no longer be in the same job all of our lives; we will need to learn new approaches to doing things all of the time; and we will need to be able to solve problems in creative and innovative ways. Simply sorting through the vast amounts of information we receive each day is a big job. No doubt, as students become adults, they will need the benefits of information literacy and technological competence, both of which are effectively developed in school library programs

(http://www.upei.ca/~fac_ed/projects/handbook/benefits.htm, 2006). This was research study of students on library usage by Colccu, JcMar. The University of Cebu Banilad problems and prepared

solutions Cebu City, 2004. Based on the findings of this study, the

13 researchers conclude that in terms of availability of information sources, library services, library management, and staff and

personnel, the result is needs improvement. Library has many existing problems in different areas that are not yet attended. The researchers also extracted many suggestions to solve those problems found (Colccu, JcMar. The University of Cebu Banilad problems and prepared solutions. Cebu City, 2004, pp. 53). Based on the thesis, assessment of the students level of satisfaction on library services and environment at x university: basis for plan of action, the findings of this study, the researchers have reached a conclusion in terms of services, and environment in the library. The first year to third year nursing student of x university utilizing the library assessed the two categories as Fair (Research Study of Students on library usage by Alombro, Cyril A. 2005, pp. 46). The findings showed that some of the services in the library were rated satisfactorily by the respondents especially when it comes to Provision of a professional librarian with the library assistant, conducts regular inventory to keep the collection relevant to the needs of the users and lastly, conducts library orientation to all year levels during

opening of classes. Most of the services were rated Fairly accessible

14 with minimal improvement needed specifically when referring to the availability of non print sources like films, sound and video recordings, tapes, CDs, and DVDs and for the maintenance of wholesome discipline and noise control inside the library (Research Study of Students on library usage by Alombro, Cyril A. 2005, pp. 46). On the subject of the environment, we have concluded that the library is fair in its milieu and circumstance, although it has not entirely address the suitability of tables and chairs and the provision of adequate space for the users of the library (Research Study of Students on library usage by Alombro, Cyril A. 2005, pp. 46). The information extracted from the brochure of University of Cebu Banilad library states that the university started to operate in June 2002. The library's collection has grown over 24.000 volumes; 308 periodicals titles for the last 6 years. In addition to the array of point resources, the university library also makes available to the academe digital electronic as well as non-print resources. The UCBanilad library open to serve students from Monday to Friday starting from 7:30 in the morning until 8:00 in the evening. During Saturdays the library would have privilege for students to utilize the services

from 7:30 in the morning until 12:00 noon. However, on Sundays

15 students can ask for request to the librarian to use the resources needed on their research, paper works and projects (UC Library Brochure, 2008). There are certain services in the library that all of the students can avail like: (1) Loan, students can borrow books from the library and can bring it to their home. (2) Reference & Information service, through the assistance of the library staff we can utilize some references or books needed. (3)Reprography, it simply means a photocopier which is available inside the library. (4) Letters to librarian, we can send through e-mail our suggestions, questions to the librarian through this e-mail (5) address Online

http://www.uc.edu.ph/page/campus/banilad/contact_us

Access to database, the library provides computers so that we can access some important information. (6) OPAC. It is where we can search for the book we need by typing the author or title of the book. (7) Internet access, the library has information arcade to students who will do research or encoding. (8) Computer printing, we can have print of our type written materials or research inside the library. (9)

Lamination. If we need lamination they provide it also. (10) On-site viewing (VCD resources), it is where we can view or watch some VCD inside the library with aid of library staff. We can view like medical16 surgical hand washing, giving birth to a baby something that can be useful and would add up in our learning. (11) Multilanguage workstation, students like ESL they can change the language into their language like English to Chinese or other language. (12) Document transfer thru, Email: we can transfer any document or datas to another person through this. CD/: library provides CD burning for free. Ipod: we can transfer music in our IPod (UC Library Brochure, 2008). The library is committed to provide a comfortable research study environment free of disruption, noise and other impediments to the success of the library users. Users must comply with these and with any reasonable request or instruction issued by library staff. Any one failing to do so may be excluded from the library. The following are prohibited inside the library: 1. Reasonable quiet is maintained in all areas in the library for the benefit of all students and all patrons. Inappropriate or unruly conduct will not be tolerated. Those responsible will be advised to leave from the library. 2. Use the library materials properly. Do not tear page/s nor

underline part/s as these are forms of vandalism and are punishable under library policy.

17 3. Leave books on the table after using except for the reserved books or periodicals that need to be returned to the Central Circulation Desk, Reserve or Periodical section. 4. Keep the library facilities in order. Chairs must be pushed back against the table after using and must not be transferred from one place to another. Observe the appropriate number sitting capacity of each table and the corresponding color coding of the chairs. 5. Present properly your recently validated ID upon entering. 6. Present your things for inspection before leaving. 7. Do not leave your things unattended. The library will not be responsible for the loss of personal belongings. 8. Group discussions and making of projects are strictly prohibited. The University has designated activity center for the group work. 9. Online Catalog and Public Access Computers are not intended for E-mail and Internet searching. Use the computers in the Information Arcade for these purposes.

18 10.Laptops should be properly logged at the Information Desk. Individual carrels along the glass windows are provided for these purposes. The use is limited for encoding. Internet access is strictly prohibited except at the designated area in the library. 11.Use of cell phones within the library is not permitted. Please leave the library to answer and make calls on cell phones. 12.All types of mobile phones and other personal devices that need to be plugged to the electrical outlet are strictly prohibited within the library premises. 13.Food and beverages (except water) are not permitted in the library. Deposit these items (foods and beverages) near the exit door before entering the library. 14.Eating, smoking, sleeping inside the library are not allowed. 15.Habitual Delinquency: Students who are frequently late in returning books and willfully disregard 16.Mutilating and Stealing: students caught stealing and mutilating library property is recommended for expulsion from the library.

19 17. A buzzer announces that the user has fifteen minutes to wind up before closing time (UC Library Brochure, 2008). The library is divided into different sections: 2. Central Circulation Desk Cataloguing - when material arrives it is sent to the catalog department which determines how the work will be described in the catalog and where it will be located in the selection. The catalog descriptions are then prepared and the material is marked with the librarys name and an identification number or code. An indication is made in the library catalog that the material is available and the newly acquired item is placed in its proper location Computers - have also increased the reliability of lending records. 2. General Interest Area- which consists of novels and pocket books. 3. General Reference- which consists of Britannica, Encyclopedia, Almanacs, Dictionaries, non-fiction books. 4. Periodicals- which contains unrelated current new stories, dealing with the news, and they tend to do so in the form of

20 summaries and or commentaries. As a whole, periodicals feature material of special interest to a particular audience. 5. Subject Reference- there are eight shelves which contains different books. 6. Information Arcade- it is where students go to have some research or to do some important things because it has a number of computers and can be utilized by students in accomplishing requirements and for printing purposes. 7. Online Catalog- which we can use to find books easily. Just by typing the title, author, subject, keyword of the book then the computer will display a list of books with call numbers, authors and title of the book. 8. Technical Section- responsible for the physical preparation and preservation of materials. Record keeping, ledger notations, un packing, typing, marking and shelving can be done by clerks or students. 9. Filipiniana- which contains books that is related to the Philippines culture and literature and entails the history of the

Philippines, government.

important

people,

historical

landmarks

and

10.E-Resources / In-House Databases- which we can find Online 21 Public Access Catalog, Internet Access, Encarta Encyclopedia 2 2006 and 2008, online access to database, access to EResources such as multimedia and full text newspaper. 11.Bound Journals Section- a small space in the library where we can find different journals, theses, and research studies. 12.Reserved Sections- which we can lend some books being used by the Clinical Instructors as reference with the assistance of a library staff (Microsoft Encarta Encyclopedia 2005).

22 THE PROBLEM Statement of the Problem This study will determine the awareness and utilization of library services as perceived by the student nurses.

Specifically, the study seeks to answer the following questions: 1. What is the profile of the respondents in terms of year level? 2. What is the respondents level of awareness on the library services? 3. What is the level of utilization of the library services among nursing students? 4. Is there a significant relationship between: 4.1. Profile and level of awareness 4.2. Profile and level of utilization 4.3. Level of awareness and utilization of library services

5. Based on the findings of the student, an enhanced orientation program may be proposed.

23 Statement of the Null Hypothesis HO1. There is no significant relationship between the profile and the level of awareness. HO2. There is no significant relationship between the profile and level of utilization. HO3. There is no significant relationship between the level of awareness and utilization of the library services. Significance of the Study This study is significant and beneficial to the following entities: Nursing Students. The study will benefit the nursing students in terms of their awareness of the library- what it can offer and how to avail of the library services; Build learning stations and have students work independently; Provide open and accessible learning

environments where students can access the most complete resource collection available to them, where the wider community is easily accessible and where a love for literature, culture and global interdependence is understood and promoted. Clinical Instructors. This study will help the clinical instructors

to recognize the services of the library and be able to encourage the

24 students to use the facilities offered. When teachers and student nurses work together in the library, there is the obvious benefit of using a wider variety of teaching approaches. The School Administration. This study can provide perspective to the administration of possible improvements needed in the library to meet the standards for future accreditations. Librarian. The librarian could determine and assess to what extent of different areas on the library that is needed to be improved; give an emphasis on things that are important by most of the students and give them equal treatment. Future Researchers. This study will benefit the future

researchers for future reference as basis and to offer guidance in making their own research study.

25 RESEARCH METHODOLOGY Research Design This study utilized a non experimental descriptive method of research. Using Likert scale, it determines the awareness and utilization level of each year level of the nursing students enrolled in University of Cebu- Banilad school year 2008-2009, about the library together with its facilities and services. The study also aimed to show whether the population used the newly expanded library increased compared to the previous library of University of Cebu - Banilad Campus. The design is geared towards profiling, scaling and

description of relationship between variables. Research Environment This research is conducted at University of Cebu-Banilad

Campus. It is located at Governor Cuenco Avenue, Banilad, Cebu City, Specifically at the front of Gaisano Country Mall. This is a nine (9) floor building with different courses offered. Most of the floors consist of 26 rooms. Some rooms have air conditioner and are well ventilated, clean and conducive for learning. The registrar, accounting, EDP, guidance office, clinic, student lounge, chapel are located at the ground floor. It

has 2 canteens one is at the ground floor and the other one is at the

26 7th floor of the building. It also has 2 audio visual rooms located at the 9th floor. They have 2 nursing skills laboratory located at the 5 th and 7th floor, 2 nutrition laboratory at 5 th floor, 2 physics and chemistry laboratory at 8th and 9th floor of the building. The school also has its quadrangle where events and activities take place and it is located at the center of the ground floor. For good accommodation and easy access of each floor they have 2 elevators and 2 stairways available. Specially, the school has the library where students make their research, paper works, study their lessons, and where they can find easy access to research. Research Respondents The respondents are randomly selected from among the the information they need and the center of this

following targets: (1) must be a nursing student from level I, level II, level III, and level IV (2) officially enrolled for first semester SY 20082009.

27 Respondents: Year Level 1st year 2nd year 3rd year 4th year Total Population 1246 1222 1369 1399 5230 Percentage 24% 23% 26% 27% 100% Sample Size 96 92 104 108 400

Research Instruments This research makes use of a questionnaire as a statistical tool to determine relationships and responses are scaled according to the appropriate statistical treatment. Likert Scale was used as a tool to assess and determine the attitude and personality of the respondents. The data being obtained were divided into three categories: (1) The respondent's profile that include year level, (2) Level of awareness on the facilities being provided, which used the following indicators: 4 FULLY AWARE (complete knowledge about the services), 3 AWARE (sufficient knowledge about the services), 2 BARELY AWARE (partial knowledge about the services) and 1 UNAWARE (no idea about the services). (3) Extent of utilization of library facilities using: 4

ALWAYS (utilizes the services at all times), 3 OFTENTIMES (utilizes

28 the services most of the time), 2 SOMETIMES (utilizes the services not frequently) and 1 NEVER (never utilizes the services). Research Procedures Gathering of Data Before the researchers conducted the study, we produced permit letters addressed to the following departments: Deans Office of Nursing Department (Dr. Helen C. Estrella), Level IV Chairman of UCBanilad (Ms. Ma. Estella P. Cabataa, R.N.), Office of the Library (Ms. Laura M. Cueva) and to the Registrar (Ms. Anecita L. Aguilar, MBA). The data collection technique intended for this research was to provide the tool prepared by the researchers. After getting the data, the researchers interpreted the results with the use of Likert Scale in order to determine the awareness and utilization of the respondents. The entire data collection period was finished within 3 days being able to proceed on. Treatment of Data First, the researchers used the slovens formula to get the sample of the population.

n= N / (1 + Ne2)

29 Where: n= number of samples N= total population e2= margin of error Second, the researchers utilized stratified sampling to get the size of the sample in each stratum in proportion to the size of the stratum. 1. First step is to find respondents and calculate the percentage in each group: % = n / N x 100 2. Second step is to get the sample size from the percentage that of our desired sample size of 400: Percentage per year level x 400 = sample respondents Third, the researchers used the chi square test to test the hypothesis concerning variances, frequency distributions, or the independence of the two variables. X = (fo fe) / fe

30 Where: X = the sum the discrepancies between observed and expected frequencies. Fe = observed frequency for each each year level expected or predicted or the basis of a theory, past experiences. Fo= observed frequency, the actual frequency obtained for each year level. To evaluate first off all we need to be able to measure the relative size of this discrepancy between frequencies, just as before we needed a measure of relative frequency to evaluate and compare a particular frequency. To measure the relative size of the discrepancy between what is expected and what is observed to happen; we also use ratios to compare the size of the differences with the size of the expected frequency.

31 DEFINITION OF TERMS To facilitate better understanding of this study, the following major terms are operationally defined: AWARENESS pertains to the respondents being aware of the services offered by the University of Cebu - Banilad Library. LIBRARY SERVICES refers to the services offered by the library such as library orientation, books, computers, printing, and viewing. NURSING STUDENTS pertains to the respondents to whom the study was conducted. They were the officially enrolled students in the college of nursing from Level I, Level II, Level III and Level IV of University of Cebu-Banilad. UNIVERSITY OF CEBU LIBRARY pertains to the area of the university where the study was conducted. UTILIZATION refers on how extent the respondents used the services offered by the University of Cebu Library.

32 CHAPTER II PRESENTATION, ANALYSIS AND INTERPRETATION OF DATA Table one shows the respondents profile according to the number and the percentage per year level. The frequency is the raw number of respondents in different year levels. The percentage is the equivalent percent out of the frequency of respondents in different year levels. SUMMARY OF FINDINGS

3. The respondents of the study are the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th year student nurses with 96 respondents from 1st year, 92 respondents from the 2nd year, 104 respondents from 3rd year, and 108 respondents from 4th year. 4. Most of the respondents are aware on the library services specifically from 1st year, 2nd year, 3rd year and 4th year. 5. Majority of the respondents occasionally utilize the library services. 6. 6.1 There is no significant relationship between the year level and the level of awareness of the library services. 6.2 There is a significant relationship between the year level and the level of utilization of the library services. 6.3 There is a significant relationship between the level of awareness and utilization on the library services.

40 CONCLUSION Based on the findings of the study, the researchers had identified the following conclusion: 3. The year level of the respondents does not affect the level of awareness on the library services.

4. The higher the year level, the more respondents utilized on the library services. 5. The higher the level of awareness, the greater level of utilization on the library services. RECOMMENDATIONS Based on the result of the study, the following are identified: 18.A reorientation program should be given to higher levels. 19.Based on the reorientation program, a parallel study should be made to re-evaluate the student's level of awareness and utilization of the library services. 20.Additional bulletin board inside the library for the students to be aware and update on the library's latest services and materials such as books, online resources and etc. 21.During library orientation, movie viewing should be given emphasis. Viewing about cultural subjects, nursing procedures and educational movies should be given emphasis during library 41 re-orientation. 22.The library could provide additional computer units and lessen the payment in using Internet services to be available to all students.
