Hot Topics A. County Executive Bakers Recent School Board Proposal I. Christian Rhodes (County Executive Education Policy Advisor 60% of students are free/reduced meals, highest ESL percentage, Prince Georges has unique issues. The goal is to start a conversation about education and hopefully lead to some action for change. Two major pieces of the proposal: One, That the Superintendent be a member of County Executives cabinet and be confirmed by the County Exec. Currently almost all positions report to County Exec but the Superintendent. Two, Allowing more expertise on Board of Education. Currently 9 member on the board. Propose at least one appt. from the county exec, one from the county counsel, president of PTA will serve as ex officio officer. Allow the three universities(Bowie State, College Park, and Prince Georges County Community College) to have a seat at the School Board. II. David Kahn (Co-Chair of Citizens for Elected Board) Bakers plan is not about our students or student achievementThe school district scores are improvingour level of improvement is increasing 1. Voting rights will be watered 2. Board will be politicizedinjecting partisan

politicsschool board should stay non-partisan the school board will be responsible for increasing student achievement but no power to do soonly the superintendent can approve the changes the superintendent will have unilateral authority with no checks and balanceswill be a powerless board since the board has no teeththis will turn PG schools into DC schoolsthe reforms there hasnt improved the schools The bill was pushed at the end of the session so it wont be heard in the countybetter to come back next year. Ideas: Statutory mandate that Universities serve as advisors VI. Announcements
