If the Indian economy were an airplane in mid-flight, it is facing the equivalent of a frightful turbulence. The rough patch has spooked some passengers more. Major drawbacks in the economy are ultimately keeping millions from moving up on the income ladder and well-being. Small businesses, the largest private employer, have been unable to grow or create more productive jobs. More people remain locked into agriculturea fact acknowledged in the Economic Survey, the governments official report card. Hunger continues to be scary, hence the need for a food law that will entitle cheaper cereals to the poor. India has not been able create a workforce capable of catching skilled jobs vacated by China. Reforms are vital to create jobs, overhaul Indias collapsing infrastructure, raise incomes and spur consumer demand to catalyse every sector, from farm to factory.
