Curtin University of Technology Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Embedded Systems Engineering 301 Assignment 2010

One method of obtaining the transfer function of an industrial control system involves applying a pseudorandom disturbance to the controlling signal and monitoring the measured system output variation. The resulting information can be applied to a correlation function to determine the transfer function. This disturbance is not large so does not have a significant influence on the system performance. The analysis of the information would be done offline based on accumulated data ( and is not part of this assignment). Part1 (10 marks): Create a technical specification for a stand alone embedded system to generate the disturbance and monitor both the systems control signal and the system output at defined intervals over a specified period of time. Discuss the implications/modifications for a standard industrial PID controller to make the use of this approach feasible. Part 2(10 marks): Investigate the techniques for generating pseudorandom binary sequences and describe at least two. Create pseudocode for one algorithm and implement it as a function in ANSI C so that it may be used in the implementation of the embedded system described in Part 1.

Report Organisation: 1. Technical Specifications for Part 1 What will be the deliverables? How would your prototype be tested to determine whether your design was a success or failure? What are your technical specifications? Could they be used for design acceptance testing? NOTE: It is not required that this report meet any specific standard for presenting technical specifications but is is required that the report be readable and useable by an engineering peer. 2. Pseudocode and function for Part 2 Ensure adequate information given so that the code could be implemented on an embedded processor How much time is required for the assignment: It is anticipated that an average student would need about 6 hours to complete each part of the assignment.

How large should the report be: This very common question has no real meaning as it is useful content which is being assessed and fluff in the report detracts from the marking but as a guide I would anticipate that for Part 1 it would be between 5 and 10 pages and for Part 2 probably 4 to 8 pages. Submission: Submission of reports will be as doc files submitted via the assignment drop box system in Blackboard. Name your assignment Assignment_1_<StudentID>.doc If you are doing the Concept Maps then only Part 1 need be submitted. If you are not doing the Concept Maps the both parts are required. To check if you are recognised as doing the Concept Maps check your grade and if you have submitted your consent form and received 3 marks for the first map your submissions have been accepted. Submission Date: 28th May 2010 Problems?: If you need any additional information please use the Main Discussion Board in Blackboard so any replies are available for all students to ensure equity.
