GAME COMMISSION RENEWS EFFORT TO PROTECT NESTING COLONY OF GREAT EGRETS AND BLACKCROWNED NIGHT-HERONS ON WADE ISLAND Cull of cormorants necessary to protect unique nesting area of two endangered species Harrisburg- PA Game Commission officials announced that they, along with officials from the U.S. Department of Agricultures Wildlife Services, have renewed a program to sustain and protect a historic nesting colony of great egrets and black-crowned night-herons - two state endangered species - on Wade Island, a three-acre isle near Harrisburg in the Susquehanna River. This effort includes the limited culling of double-crested cormorants increasingly dominating the canopy space on this relatively unique nesting site. Culling was first used in 2006, and again in 2011 and 2012.

Wade Island is home to the states largest nesting colony of black-crowned night-herons and great egrets, both of which are on Pennsylvanias endangered species list, said Dan Brauning, Game Commission Wildlife Diversity Section supervisor. It isnt clear what brings these colony nesting birds to Wade Island. Perhaps it is good food resources in the Susquehanna River or its proximity to the Chesapeake Bay. Whatever the reason, no other egret/night-heron nesting colony in the state comes close to matching Wade Island. It is by far the states largest and probably its most vital. Unfortunately, double-crested cormorants - also colony nesters - have pushed their way into the night-heron and egret nesting area, and the nesting activity of the cormorants has increasingly become a concern. While cormorants were at one time rare in Pennsylvania, populations have steadily increased. In fact, populations of double-crested cormorants have been increasing rapidly in many parts of the U.S. since the mid-1970s, and their abundance has led to increased conflicts with various biological and socioeconomic resources, including recreational fisheries, other birds, vegetation, and fish hatchery and commercial aquaculture production. In the latest survey, conducted on May 2, the number of great egret nests decreased slightly from 185 to 181, and the number of black-crowned night-heron nests dropped from 67 to 48, compared to the survey conducted in May 2012. This is the second-lowest number of night-heron nests in the 28 years of nest surveys on Wade Island. Brauning noted that extreme care is taken to not disturb the endangered species nesting on the island. Culling efforts will be stopped immediately if it is perceived that activities are threatening the nesting of egrets or herons. For more information on great egrets or black-crowned night-herons, please visit the Game Commissions website (www.pgc.state.pa.us), click on Wildlife, then choose Endangered and Threatened Species, and then choose either Great Egret or Black-crowned Night-heron in the Endangered Species section. f

OVEN CLEANING We recently purchased a new self-cleaning electric range. I had heard that using the self-cleaning option was quite expensive due to the high temperatures the oven goes to, but I had to clean my oven! I turned it on and the timer went to three hours and 30 minutes. Wow, no wonder its expensive. After an hour, I went and turned it off. When it cooled down, it was completely clean! All I had to do was use my hand vacuum to get up the ashes. I also turned on the self-cleaning option when I had just finished baking, so it wouldnt have to work as hard. -S.

DOLLAR STRETCHER TIPS LEMONS AT THE READY I love fresh lemons in tea or other summer beverages. When I get home from the farmers market or store, I cut the lemons into slices and place the slices into a zipper bag to be frozen. As needed, I just get several slices of frozen lemon and place in my beverage. It keeps it cool as well as emits its flavor. Also the frozen lemon ends are easier to grate for zest. Once thawed, I use that in salads, soups, and stews. I never have lemons get soft or go bad as mine are always sliced, frozen, and ready for use. This technique is fabulous for cool, refreshing drinks. -S. CHEAP DROP CLOTHS Next time you are about to paint indoors or out, look to your shower curtains and liners. When you are changing them out, dont throw them way. Instead, give them a second life as paint drop cloths. They will absorb all the spilled paint and will not cost you anything. Tablecloths purchased at a dollar store work the same way. -Elizabeth H.

NEW OLD CLOTHES I have a favorite cotton sweater that I have worn and washed. I didnt want to reduce it to wear at home since it was in perfect condition, so I bought two packages of dye at a dollar store. I followed the instructions and now have a brand new sweater. I dyed it almost the same green as it originally was. Now I will look at my other clothes to see if they are dye-able and renewable. -G.

BOOKS -- Recommended Reading Miss Peregrines Home for Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs Reviewed by Ealish Waddell Growing up, Jacob loved to listen to the stories his grandfather told of his own youth. A refugee from wartorn Poland, he spent the war years in a bright, pleasant orphanage on a remote island in Wales, surrounded by friends who could literally do wonders -levitate, walk around invisible, lift boulders, talk to animals. He even has photographs of them, tiny portraits of solemn-eyed children doing very weird things. And he always insisted they were as real as he was. Then Jacobs grandfather dies suddenly and horribly, and in the aftermath, a traumatized Jacob begins to question what exactly is true. He is determined to make a pilgrimage to see the legendary orphanage and its remaining residents for himself. But in Wales he finds only a crumbling old pile atop a hill, an abandoned wreck destroyed by a bomb in the early days of the war. No one has lived there for a very long time. And then he hears voices ... Thus Jacob finally meets the peculiar children and discovers that the truth of his grandfathers tales is even stranger than he could ever
have imagined. And it quickly becomes clear that his new friends are in grave danger from a doom that Jacob has unwittingly led right to their door. Now, he may be the only one who can save them.

The atmosphere of this novel is exquisitely weird, blending the musty oddness of an old-fashioned childrens tale with a contemporary energy, all tinged with a persistent underlying creepiness that gives the reader a good kind of shivers. And, brilliantly, the vintage photographs that Jacob describes are sprinkled throughout the pages, giving force to the narrative in a subtle, visceral way. Actually looking upon the faces of the peculiar children themselves gives the reader just enough of a twinge that it isnt difficult to believe that maybe, just maybe, they arent simply a story. DOLLAR STRETCHER TIPS THAT LEFTOVER MEAT Cook ground turkey, chicken, or beef in a large frying pan or saucepan. Add your favorite seasoning (taco, beef stew, fajita, etc.) and then let simmer for several minutes. Cool and put cooked meat into a plastic freezer bag, laying the bag on its side to flatten before sealing. Place flattened bag onto a cookie sheet and put into freezer until frozen. Now, when you need just enough of your favorite cooked meat for tacos, stew, etc., you just snap off the required amount and put the rest back into the freezer. This is a great time-saver! -D.

(7), Berra and Dickey (8), Nettles and Maris (9). Its also worth noting that two single-digit pinstripers are enshrined in the Hall of Fame at Cooperstown but not Monument Park in Yankee Stadium: Earle Combes (1) and Tony Lazzeri (2). Combes was a notorious racist and that, no doubt, has made it easy to forget his highcaliber statistics. Lazzeri, however, was one of the citys most popular players during his era, and when Jeters number is retired, heres hoping the Yankees do right by the man. And, of course, who could forget the legendary career of Rick Cerone (6), who for several days in the early 80s was one of Americas favorite Yankees. More Yankee lore: Mattingly was the face of Yankee baseball (no matter how much Dave Winfield protested) during the 80s and was rightfully awarded the title of captain. Along with Mattingly, Willie Randolph and Ron Guidry donned the black C on their uniform, legends who had succeeded slick fielding and timely hitting Graig Nettles in that regard. Nettles himself had succeeded Thurman Munson, who was the first Yankee captain since the passing of Lou Gehrig in 1939. Before I drown this column in numbers, back to the story ... So Mattingly and Jeter finish working out, and theyre basically the last to leave the field. A man of few words (most of the time anyway), Jeter defers to Mattingly, and as they begin to walk toward the clubhouse, legend has it, Mattingly says to Jeter, Lets run off the field ... you never know whos watching. A week before the All-Star game, Jeter sealed his own Hall of Fame and Yankee legend history by homering for his 3,000th hit. As insignificant as that story may seem, Jeter would go onto say that the moment with Mattingly coming off the field meant a lot to him. When he was named captain of the Yankees years after Mattinglys retirement, he invoked his name as someone he looked up to and respected. Last week, Mattingly returned the favor. He put himself right there with all the greats, guys like Joe D., the Mick and Babe, Mattingly told The New York Post. Hes a great person. Hes won. Hes won individual stuff, but hes won championships. Hes a great story. Mark Vasto is a veteran sportswriter and publisher of The Kansas City Luminary. (c) 2011 King Features Synd., Inc.
A SPORTING VIEW By Mark Vasto Yankee Tradition Runs Deep Don Mattingly, No. 23, and Derek Jeter, No. 2, were in the outfield shagging fly balls toward the end of another batting practice. Mattingly had watched Jeter move through the Yankee farm system and knew that he was, at least according to plans, his heir apparent. For one thing, it was kind of common knowledge that the Yankee brass was hesitant to assign most ballplayers single-digit numbers. This sounds silly, but when you consider that the Yankees are one of the few teams who refuse to stitch their players names to their jerseys, it adds significance. Many Yankee greats have worn the single digits: Billy Martin (1), Babe Ruth (3), Gehrig (4), Dimaggio (5), Mantle
Is your life like lasagna? My wife makes the best lasagna youve ever eaten. I watched her make it once. She prepares her sauce with secret ingredients that I cant tell you about or shed have to kill me. She mixes together all of these cheeses. Then she carefully layers all of these ingredients in her special lasagna dish. Its the layering that attracted my attention. She puts a layer of noodles, then sauce, then cheese. And she cooks it all together, layer upon layer, until its done. So while I smell the lasagna cooking, I listen to life. And I realize that life is somewhat like lasagna. Life layers stuff on you. Some of the stuff you ask for, you like the special ingredients. Other stuff you dont. But you do get to choose most of your lifes ingredients. And it all cooks together in your lifes pan until its done. So what ingredients are you choosing for your life? Whats cooking in your lifes pan? Listen to your life and choose positive life ingredients to cook in you.

BOARD OF GAME COMMISSIONERS APPROVES TWO RESOLUTIONS Both were drafted in response to bills under consideration by state legislators. The Pennsylvania Board of Game Commissioners at a board working group meeting Monday drafted and approved two resolutions in response to legislation that would change the way the agency conducts business. The first resolution confirms the Board of Game Commissioners opposition to any attempt to merge the Pennsylvania Game Commission and the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission, and notes its a message the board wished to convey to the chairmen of both the state House and Senate Game and Fisheries committees. The Board of Game Commissioners noted the Pennsylvania Game Commission is an independent agency charged with regulating and protecting wildlife within the states borders and the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission is an independent agency charged with regulating and protecting the states fisheries. We affirm our commitment to the status of the two independent agencies and that they remain independent with their ability to focus on their primary responsibilities, the resolution stated. The second resolution announced the Board of Game Commissioners opposition to reducing the term of game commissioners from eight to four years. The Board of Game Commissioners is comprised of eight commissioners who serve a single eight-year term. The resolution noted a majority of commissioners believe it takes a new Commissioner several years to understand the broad scope of this complex agency. Consequently, the commissioners do not support the reduction in the term of commissioners. The Board of Game Commissioners also wished to convey this message to the chairmen of the House and Senate Game and Fisheries committees. f

HARRISBURG - After more than a decade of success, the Pennsylvania Game Commission is working to expand its Junior Pheasant Hunt Program and is seeking partners to do so. The commission is asking sportsmens clubs and other conservation organizations to meet an increasing demand created by the youngsters who want to participate in the program. And this year, clubs have the opportunity to host not one, but two organized junior pheasant hunts, and have been given leeway to accept more participants at the events they host. Those new options are among the many reasons interested clubs might want to start planning their events now. The Game Commission has organized junior pheasant hunts since 2002 as a way to create more hunting opportunities for both prospective and current junior hunters ages 12 to 16. To participate, junior hunters must have successfully completed the basic HunterTrapper Education course, however, they do not need to purchase a hunting license. Recently, the programs popularity has swelled. In 2012, 26 events filled within a two-week period, and the Game Commission estimates at least 3,000 more young hunters would take part if given the opportunity. The program has great potential to be an effective hunter-retention tool. Ninety percent of junior pheasant hunt participants purchased hunting licenses in the same year. To qualify to host, clubs must open event registration to the public and the hunt must be held on lands open to public hunting; which could include State Game Lands or acreage enrolled in the Hunter Access Program. The Game Commission provides, free of charge, a limited number of pheasants to host clubs. Pheasants are provided on a first-come, first-served basis at a rate of two legal birds per participant, and the commission will do its best to accommodate all appropriate requests. Changes to the guidelines governing junior pheasant hunts were made to help clubs that saw demand for such programs that was too great to accommodate with a single event. Previously, the Game Commission capped junior pheasant hunts at a maximum of 50 participants. Now, the clubs can decide how large an event they can handle. The addition of a second day also allows for some flexibility in meeting the demand, said Samantha Pedder, outreach coordinator for the Game Commission. This year, clubs may host
events on either Saturday, Oct. 12 or Oct. 19, or both. Applications and more information, including a Junior Pheasant Hunt Planning Guide, can be found on the Pennsylvania Game Commission website. Applications to host junior hunts must be returned to the Pennsylvania Game Commission and received by Friday, July 26. Junior pheasant hunts help to bolster a youths interest in small-game hunting, which has seen recent declines in participation. The events provide an opportunity for those youngsters who are interested in hunting, but might not try it on their own, and for those who dont hunt because they dont have anyone to mentor them while afield. Pennsylvania Game Commission Executive Director Carl G. Roe urged local clubs to take part in the effort. The future of hunting is directly related to the continuing participation of young Pennsylvanians, Roe said. The goal is to successfully compete with all the other activities and recreational opportunities that vie for a young persons time. Its truly a challenge for the Game Commission, as well as Pennsylvanias nearly 1 million hunters. If your club or organization is interested in hosting an event this year, please contact Samantha Pedder at mailto:sapedder@pa.gov or by phone at 717-787-4250 x 3327. f DOLLAR STRETCHER TIPS THE SMART PHONE SHOPPING LIST Keep your grocery list up to date with text messages from family members. When they open an item, they should text the product to the member who does the shopping. By doing this, everyone helps keep the house stocked, and assuming the shopper has a smart phone, they can copy/ paste the item to a running grocery list. -Jenn WALLPAPER SAMPLES This is the time of year when wallpaper stores are clearing out their old sample books for the new. Often times, they will give away the books just for asking. I wrap many smaller items in the wallpaper. Wallpaper is thicker and more elegant than regular gift wrap. I even wrapped some smaller Christmas gifts with it this year and got many compliments. -S.

NOTICE
As you know, we run many reader ads for government auctions, job positions, earn money at home, cash loans, credit cards, etc. Most of these ads come through state and national ad networks. Most of them are selling directories or listings of where to APPLY FOR what is advertised. This information may be available at less cost elsewhere. While these ads are screened where possible, we have no way of verifying the authenticity of their claims or the value of their product. The buying decision must be yours. If you have problems with any of these advertisers, please let us know and we will attempt to get you a refund. Most of the companies we have checked will refund their fees to unsatisfied customers. Read the ads carefully. Some charge a fee, as noted in the ad, directly to your phone bill when you call them. Once again, we cant verify claims for every ad. Please consider their offer and make a voluntary and reasonable buying decision. Moneysaver Advertising

DOLLAR STRETCHER TIPS GARDEN WATER I am an avid gardener and composter, but before my garden weeds go into the compost bin, I put them in a large pail of water, which I sit out in the sun for about two weeks. If I get the chance to go to the beach, I pick up some dried sea weed and put this in the water pail as well for many added nutrients. I water my outdoor container plants with the compost tea in place of store bought fertilizer.
I am also an avid water conservationist so the water that goes into the compost pail comes from my kitchen sink where I catch the water being used to wash vegetables or my hands. In the dry season, I catch all of my extra water (such as the water heating up for a shower) to water my garden. Its a lot of work, but it is exercise and a good way to conserve water. -Bonnie P. TELL YOUR FRIENDS When I need a piece of furniture or other items, I frequently put up a notice at work. People there seem to have what I need and want an easy way to get rid of it. I was given a stained sofa. I rented a steam cleaner and got the stains out in an hour. A friend sold me a nice antique cherry dresser for only $50. It has a scratch, but it is easily covered with a doily. I was also given a sewing machine. Since I am always on the lookout for a bargain, I can usually find what I need from co-workers. Incidentally, my workplace has about 120 workers. -SB

REPURPOSING OLD FURNITURE Looking to make some room and organize my bedroom closet, I started to condense the clothes from an old obtrusive wardrobe into my closet. I have a tiny old bungalow type house. When I emptied the closet, my hubby started to break it apart for the trash. I had this brainstorm to take out the two drawers, which were like new. I put slider casters on the bottom of them and slid them under my bed! After my DH sawed off an inch, they fit perfectly, and my bed looks like a captains bed. Now I have a place for my t-shirts and socks. It looks terrific, and no one would know they didnt belong to the bed! For free, I used something we already had and repurposed those drawers to accommodate my storage need! We are always excited to save money being creative and frugal! -Mickey C.
