The Only Annual Collection for Priests of the Archdiocese of Chicago www.prmaa.org This fund raising campaign will benefit just the retired priests of the Archdiocese of Chicago and is not to be confused with the Annual National Campaign for Retired Religious (nuns, priests and brothers). Thank God Many Continue To Serve Our Needs About half of our retired priests, who can still drive, are happy to help out in priest-short parishes, hospitals and wherever you need them. The older, sick or infirm priests live with fond memories of you and pray for your needs daily. This weekend is the annual collection for Chicagos retired priests. Dear Friends in Christ, On the weekend of June 89, 2013, the special second collection is for the Retired Priests of the Archdiocese. The retired priests celebrate Mass and sacraments in hundreds of parishes throughout the Archdiocese of Chicago. Without their dedicated service, many parishes would need to reduce the number of Masses celebrated each weekend. Some retired priests are called upon to be temporary administrators of parishes and others fill in to allow pastors some needed time off. Our senior priests do this willingly as a continuation of the many years that they have faithfully served our Church. Please join me in offering our retired priests words of appreciation and gratitude for their many years of priestly ministry. The Priests Retirement and Mutual Aid Association (PRMAA) cares for our retired priests. This year, as is the case in every family, we have seen the cost of health care, prescription drugs, and nursing-home care increase. In addition, the priests pension fund remains seriously impacted by the economic downturn. This special collection will help us continue to support our retired priests. You may be aware that the December collection for retired men and women Religious is designated to provide only for those in Religious Orders. Archdiocesan priests do not receive any funds from this collection. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of our retired priests for their lives and their exemplary ministry. We are blessed to have more than one hundred retired priests ministering in our parishes. May their spirit continue to enliven our Church! I am thankful to all of you for your remarkable generosity in this collection last year. I ask you to repeat your kindness this year. We divide time into BC and AD; BC before Christ and AD, Anno Domini - in the year of Our Lord - since the birth of Jesus. This is our way of showing that Jesus is the center of history, Jesus is the most important event in history. Everything in history pales into insignificance compared to Jesus. It is the same in our lives. Jesus is or should be the center of our lives. Jesus is or should be the center of our week. Because Jesus is the center of our lives we come here to celebrate the Eucharist every Sunday and afterwards we go in peace to love and serve the Lord whom we encountered here in the Eucharist. Just as Jesus is the center of time, BC and AD, our celebration of Corpus Christi today reminds us to keep Jesus in the Eucharist at the center of our lives. Jesus desires that we live each day in intimate union with him, he is not a stranger to meet for just one hour every Sunday. Jesus is our best friend, or as some young children say, our bestest friend. Is Jesus your best friend? Can you live your entire day with Jesus and also spend special time in prayer with Jesus in the Eucharist. Just as Jesus is the center of time, and the center of our lives, I very much like when the Tabernacle is the focal point of the church. According to the structure of each church building and in accordance with legitimate local customs, the Most Holy Sacrament is to be reserved in a tabernacle in a part of the church that is noble, prominent, readily visible, and adorned in a dignified manner Every time we celebrate the Eucharist here we are reminded of the great love of Jesus for us by his giving himself for us in his passion and death. The Eucharist shows us Jesus love for us. Jesus is indeed our best friend. Jesus is the center of time. Is he also the center of your day? Do you live each day with Jesus your best friend? Fr. T.
