Lap Swimming Tips Please enter the pool from the shallow end. To avoid accidents, please notify all other swimmers in a lane before entering. When 3 or more swimmers occupy a lane, swimmers should circle-swim to the right.

Water Aerobics Class Description


Hi/Lo H2O- is a high-powered, fat burning, cardio challenge in the shallow end of the pool. Follow the instructors lead of continuous interval training in a low impact water environment and before you know it youll have an hour workout under your belt to start your day off right. Participants can adjust the workout intensity with speed and resistance.

Arthritis PLUS- is suitable for every fitness level. This class offers walking and range of motion exercise to increase mobility, flexibility, balance and endurance with a little cardio added in. This Arthritis Foundation Aquatic Program was codeveloped by the YMCA and offers a little more than Arthritis but less than Hi/Lo H20. A great add on to your Wellness Center workout.

Arthritis - is suitable for every fitness level. This class offers walking and range of motion exercise to increase mobility, flexibility, balance and endurance. The Arthritis Foundation Aquatic Program was co-developed by the YMCA and offers a fun, safe way for people with arthritis, orthopedic conditions, back pain or those new to water fitness an avenue to exercise and stay fit. A great add on to your Wellness Center workout.

Power Waves- is a total body exercise session designed to give a great flexibility and cardio workout with little to no joint impact. This is a high energy class that stresses core and cardio with the assistance of aquatic exercise equipment. Movements in this class may be adapted to any level of exerciser. The exercises vary from class to class to keep energy levels high and to keep the workouts fresh and exciting. Participants wear flotation belts during class. Additionally participants should be comfortable in deep water.

Water Weight Loss- is a shallow water strength training and aerobic conditioning workout. Aquatic exercise equipment is used to enhance resistance and strength effects of workout. Movements in this class may be adapted to any level of exerciser.

Schedule Item Descriptions


Adult Open Swim: Open to swimmers 15 and older. Priority is given to those wishing to water walk, water jog, and exercise other than lap swim. Those swimming laps in open space must be aware of others, and yield right of way. Lap Lanes: Anyone 15 year and older may swim laps in the designated lanes. Lap lane users are required to share lanes when needed. Open swim activity not permitted in these lanes. Please notify all other swimmers in a lane before entering, and enter from shallow end. Use of starting blocks is not permitted during lap swim. Open Swim: Open to all swimmers. All children 5 years and younger, regardless of swimming ability, must have an adult physically in the water, and within arms distance, at all times. Swimmers under 18 must pass a swimming test given by the lifeguard before entering. An adult may stay within arms distance of a child without a floatation device who wishes to swim in the shallow end only. Lap swimming is permitted in the open space, but all lap swimmers must be aware of others and yield right of way. Please yield right of way to swim lessons during open swim times. Swim Team Practice: These time slots and lanes are designated for swim team only. Open swim activity not permitted during these times. Please visit YMCAWNC.org for practice times, locations and more information on Piranha Swim Team. Water Fitness: These lanes are designated for water fitness classes at these times. Open swim may be allowed for families and children supervised by an adult as long as it does not interfere with the class. Please do not swim through a water fitness class or disrupt by jumping in, throwing toys or being loud. Swim Lessons: These lanes and times are designated for swim lessons only. There is limited open swim during group swim lessons and interference with swim lessons will not be tolerated. Masters Swim: Masters Swim is a program for adults who want to get a competitive swim level workout. These lanes are designated for this program but may be used by other lap swimmers if there is not a need for all lanes designated. Pool Parties: Pool parties are available on weekends and can be set up by the Aquatic Director.
General Rules & Regulations: All patrons must shower before entering the pool or whirlpool, per NC State Health Regulations. All children 5 years of age and younger, regardless of swimming ability, must have an adult physically in the water at all times: maximum of 2 children per one adult. A limited use of floatation devices & other toys will be allowed at the lifeguards di scretion. Inflatable flotation devices are not allowed in the pool. Please ask the lifeguard before entering the equipment closet. All patrons must be at least 18 to use the sauna or whirlpool. Please respect the lifeguards authority to enforce all oth er pool rules, posted or otherwise. Breath-holding activities, regardless of the reason/purpose, are unsafe, and will not be permitted in the pool at any time. Thunder & Lightning Policy: As it is unsafe to be in or around the water during an electrical storm, the YMCA will close the pool, sauna, and whirlpool for 30 minutes after the most recent audible clap of thunder or visible strike of lightning. All patrons must leave the pool deck during this time. Its the rule One long whistle Exit the pool: To ensure the safety of all members and patrons, the lifeguards engage in periodic mock drowning drills. In the event of these, or any true emergency, please follow the directions of YMCA Staff as promptly as is safely possible.
