13 Annual Balloon Festival Set to Launch, June 7-9 Sponsors Making it Happen!
CAMBRIDGE The Cambridge community is gearing up for the 12th Annual Cambridge Valley Balloon Festival, set for Friday, June 7 through Sunday, June 9, 2013. An outpouring of support from community businesses and organizations is again responsible for bringing this fantastic event to Cambridge. The Cambridge Valley Chamber of Commerce, organizer of the event, is putting the final touches on the schedule of events and the commemorative program. Latest information is available on the Chamber website at www.cambridgenychamber.com. Schedules will appear in local newspapers next week. The Festival will again feature 10 hot air balloon pilots flying up to 15 different balloons over the hills of Cambridge, Jackson and White Creek (weather permitting). This years balloon sponsors include Ackley-Ross Funeral Home, Baker Insurance Agency, Cambridge Guest Home, Country Gals Caf, Glens Falls National Bank, Paraco Gas, OHearns Pharmacy, Schoolhouse Pizza, Team Tinkham Prudential Manor Homes and The Eagle Newspaper. Welcome gifts for the pilots are sponsored by Dee Dee Wilkie. Traditionally, pilots carry a bottle of champagne in the balloon basket to present to the owner of the property where they land after a flight. Champagne for this years festival is being sponsored by Black Dog Wines & Spirits. The Opening Ceremony on Friday evening will feature music by the Washington County Band and the introduction of all pilots and their sponsors. The ceremony is sponsored by Hoosick Tire. Throughout the weekend, many events will be held to entertain crowds between the launches and to showcase the Cambridge community. On Friday morning, elementary students at Cambridge Central School will enjoy an inflation demonstration, which is sponsored by the PTP. On Friday evening, an amazing fireworks display will light up the sky, thanks to Absolute Auto Credit, Anthem Sports Tour of the Battenkill, Leon Barkley Real Estate, Captain Maxson Post #634, R.H. Endee Electric, Mommas Restaurant and Southwestern Vermont Health Care. Robert Wuagneux will entertain the crowd at the Guest Home Park from 7:30 p.m. until the fireworks begin. During the day on Saturday, many events occur, including the First Balloon Festival Car Show sponsored by the Cambridge Lions Club, hosted by VARAK Park. Live performances by the Hill Country Cloggers and the Tonebenders will be part of the Car Show, thanks to the generosity of The Garden Shop, Happy at Home Pet Sitting Service, Kings Car Care Center, Mark Pluta and Noble Ace Hardware. On Saturday night, the Taste of Cambridge returns, sponsored by Adirondack Trust Insurance and Cambridge Valley Machining. Happy Days Again DJ Service will provide music during the Taste and during the spectacular Moon Glow, sponsored by Cambridge Guest Home. Both events are in the Guest Home Park. On Sunday, the community bids farewell to this years pilots at the Pilots Brunch, sponsored by Eagle Bridge Smoked meats. Barbara Baker, teacher and author, will speak about the writing of her work in progress, a book about a woman and her children who were slaves of Abram VanTuyl in his house on the Turnpike in Cambridge, New York. After much research Ms. Baker discovered through documents that the womans name was Rachel and her children were Susan and Diane. Ms. Baker, a graduate of SUNY at Albany, has taught in Mamoroneck, New York and Manhattan before teaching in Cambridge. She has studied at the University of Vermont and Skidmore College and has been recognized by the National Council of Teachers of English as a Teacher of Excellence. She continues to write and her most recent publication was an article in Hobby Farm Magazine. Among other current projects, she continues work on her book about Rachel. Ms. Baker believes that Rachels story needs to be told. Saving Our History Honoring Our Past LANDSCAPES OF WASHINGTON COUNTY- Green Bridge Gallery, located in the heart of the Village of Cambridge, will open on June 14 with its inaugural show: Landscapes of Washington County by Matt Chinian. An opening reception on the 14th from 6-8 p.m. will launch the show WITH music by Athena Burke and light refreshments. This is the first show at The Green Bridge Gallery, which is located in the historical Italianate building in the forefront of VARAK Park. Once a newspaper print shop, the buildings high ceilings and industrial design set the stage for a unique space in which visitors will enjoy viewing the exhibited art. COMMUNITY CITIZEN AWARD GIVEN- The Battenkill Conservancy (BkC) has announced the recipient of its second annual Community Citizen Award for 2013. The award will be given to West Hebron resident Joshua Levy. Community leader, environmentalist and business owner, Josh Levy has been an important contributor to the well-being of the Battenkill watershed communities. He is president and founder of The Phantom Laboratory, which since 1989 has developed and manufactured high-precision phantoms and custom solutions for medical imaging and radiation therapy fields. In addition to being a key employer in Washington County, his company has been recognized by the U.S Department of Labor for its workplace safety and health program. The company was one of New York States first to receive membership in the Safety & Health Achievement Recognition Program or SHARP. Joshs commitment to the environment is evidenced by the design and energy improvements that have been made to the laboratory itself including the buildings passive solar design, maximum use of natural light and an on-grid solar energy system that produces 40% of the buildings electricity. Excess clean energy is sold back to the local electric company, further reducing the C02 emissions generated by conventional electricity. The addition of a recycled, carbon neutral wood pellet boiler enables The Phantom Laboratory to produce 80% of its building and process heating requirements. Joshs focus on the environmental impact of his company extends to the work environment he provides his employees including over 41 acres of outdoor recreational hiking, biking and snow shoeing trails. Being able to offer his employees the beauty of the Battenkill watershed is key to attracting and maintaining a talented and committed work force. Josh has invested much of his time assisting those organizations that help to preserve and protect the areas natural resources including serving many years on BkCs board. His hard work and dedication to BkC and his continued service on the Advisory Board is key to the organizations ongoing mission of protecting and enhancing the Battenkill Watershed and made him a natural choice to receive this years award. The Battenkill Conservancy Board of Directors created the annual Community Citizen Award in 2011 to recognize a local resident whose contributions to civic, non-profit, artistic or environmental projects have been beneficial to the Battenkill and thus to the community at large. The award will be presented at the annual The Battenkill Runs Through It Beach and Music Festival on Saturday, June 1st, at the Greenwich Town Beach.

The six week program will commence on Monday, July 1 and run through Friday, August 9. Once again, the children will have the opportunity to participate in the American Red Cross swim program offered at Lake Lauderdale each morning returning to the CCC for a healthy, nutritious lunch and an afternoon filled with stimulating programs. There is no enrollment charge for LL&P, and the CCC is hard at work seeking the necessary funds to support this program. To raise additional funds for Lunch, Learn & Play on Friday and Saturday, June 7 and 8, the CCC will host its second Salem Film Festival and Fashion Show starting at 7 pm. Chris Fronhofer and students from the Salem High School film club will premiere original short films. Following the films, there will be a fashion extravaganza under the direction of the talented Suzi Thomas. Both evenings will also feature a dessert auction as well. The proceeds from all events will support Lunch, Learn & Play. The CCC is located at 58 East Broadway directly across from the school. SENIOR TRIPS- On June 12 the Greenwich Seniors Club will ride on the Champlain Canal boat Caldwell Belle south from Schuylerville. Changes in transportation are documented by period photographs and artifacts. Goods and services in the stores are discussed by local writers who also remembered or heard about railway and canal experiences. Shipments made their way up the Hudson, through the Champlain Canal and north to Lake Champlain or when heading south to Albany, Troy or New York City. Containers had improved to accommodate larger numbers of goods and more efficient ways to dispense foods in the stores. Options in 1900 now included wooden boxes, cloth bags, crates, barrels, kegs, tin bins, cans and, for home-use, scuttles and baskets. There was no light-weight cardboard, no corrugated cardboard boxes, few brown paper bags, to say nothing of plastic! Conveyances varied according to size, weight, and distance which commodities had to travel. Locally, some general stores would take orders and deliver in a day or two. A wagon or cart with horse could be rented by an individual or small business from a livery for local travel. Within the county, stagecoaches could carry travelers and their baggage, smaller parcels, and some mail. By using both the canal and, later, the railroad, general stores provided necessary and desirable goods closer to home. Stocking the General Stores is open to the public at no charge on Wednesdays and Fridays from 10:00 A.M to 4:00 P.M. through November. I went to Hong Kong Restaurant and Sushi Bar on Burgoyne Avenue in Hudson Falls, NY for lunch. I ordered a Sushi Regular, which contained a variety of fish, including, but not limited to, tuna roll, eel roll, and salmon. The order included soup and salad. The sushi was outstanding! The price was very reasonable. Rating: Excellent. MURDER MYSTERY DINNER THEATER: The Poestenkill Christian Church will host a Murder Mystery Dinner Theater on Saturday, June 22. CCC RECEIVES LARAC FUNDING The Salem Courthouse Community Center is pleased to announce it has received LARAC funding in support of two worthy initiatives. The 2013 grant will enable the CCC to once again offer its Music in the Courtroom chamber music series under the direction of accomplished pianist, conductor and educator, Daniel Shulman. The Sunday concerts at 3 pm will be offered on June 9. Mr. Shulman has lined up an impressive roster of talented performers who will present compositions by Bach, Beethoven, Brahms, Schubert and Mozart. Mr. Shulmans commentary before each selection provides great insight into the lives of the composers and the times in which they lived. LARAC has also funded Art for Young Students, a wonderful opportunity for art instruction which will be offered over the spring school break from April 1 through April 5. The classes are being conducted by Gabi Moore, an artist who lives in Cambridge. Gabi has extensive teaching experience including eleven years at Fordham University. Students between the ages of 5 to 9 may take advantage of Painting for Fun from 1 to 2 each afternoon. Extreme Drawing is being offered to students between the ages of 10 to 14 each afternoon from 2:30 to 3:30. Due to the generous support of LARAC, there will be no charge to participate in either class. Space is limited and parents should contact the CCC at 518-854-7053 to register their children. ORAL HISTORY PROJECT- The Warren County Historical Society will be conducting oral history interviews during the Rural Heritage Festival and Youth Fair at the Warren County Fairgrounds in Warrensburg, NY on August 10th. The Warren County Historical Society is searching for individuals who would like to participate and are specifically interest in talking with individuals who have some knowledge in three specific areas: World War II Memories: We are looking for individuals who have memories of The Home Front during WWII (1941-45). Do you remember Pearl Harbor, D-Day, the election of 1944, and FDRs death? Also do you remember V-E Day and V-J Day, rationing, victory gardens, movies, songs, etc.? Fairs in Warren County: We are interested in talking with individuals who remember the various County Fairs in Warrensburg and perhaps other locations through the 1960s. Churches: We are looking for individuals who have an interest in the importance of churches in the development of a community. It would be especially interesting to learn why a particular congregation formed in a particular community, and what influence the people of the church had on the community, and the role of the church in creating a gathering place for people to meet for social events. In addition, those who place in the top spots in both divisions are eligible to compete in the NYS Fair Talent Showcase in Syracuse, NY. VILLAGE WIDE GARAGE SALE- The Valley Falls Village-Wide lawn and garage sale will be held Saturday, June 8 from 9 AM to 2 PM. The sale is sponsored by the Valley Falls Library, which will host its annual Treasures and Trash sale on the library lawn.
