Mrs. Susan Freeman Principal- Deltona High School 100 Wolf Pack Run Deltona, FL 32725 Dear Mrs.

Freeman,

4/24/2012

As a student who is concerned for her peers and their futures, I believe the action of concealing things that are banned to possess at our school is wrong and is an action that my fellow students and I should not be taking part in. One of the key elements in doing this is having somewhere to put the item(s) that they are concealing, and at school, that place would be in a locker. Students can put whatever they want in them, as long as it fits. This includes supplies, books, sports equipment and more. However, things that are not allowed can be too, such as drugs, tobacco, and weapons. Our school and other officials must consider conducting random locker searches in order to catch the perpetrators of these actions before them happen. This action could help put an end to illegal activities at our school and stop bad things before they happen. The law allows people to do certain things. The law also, however, stops us from doing certain things as well. Things such as smoking or using tobacco under the age of 18, using marijuana or other illegal substances, or bringing weapons such as knives, guns, and firearms to a school are illegal and prohibited by the law. In the cases of some students at this school, they still take part in these activities although they are prohibited there and in the real world. In order to do so, students can and will hide these things in their lockers and them get them once they can. If the school performed random searches of the lockers, they could help put an end to the illegal activities done at this school. Searches by school officials and police could reveal the illegal items so they could be confiscated and the student(s) in possession could be punished

and/or prosecuted. Locker searches would do just that. Our school should conduct random locker searches to confiscate and end illegal activities before they happen. Lets face it: there s a lot of bad things that happen at our school. People steal, are rude to other students and staff, bring things on campus that they are not supposed to do and the list goes on. Conducting random locker searches would allow school appointees to seize and confiscate some of the items that are not allowed to be on campus before students use them and do bad things. Doing these searches would stop bad things from happening. As I stated before, students can use their lockers in the hallways or locker rooms to hide things from the school such as weapons, drugs, and prohibited things to take them out and do horrible things. Students could be caught and punished for their actions if these searches were in place. Conducting random locker searches would be good to do because it could stop the rate of bad things that happen at this school. Out of concern for the safety and futures of my peers and myself, I submit this letter to you for consideration on this issue. Executing these searches could be good for our school because they could help put an end to illegal activities at our school such as drug use and possession of illegal substances. They could also help stop bad things that could possibly happen at our school as a result of things stored in lockers in secret. Please take my letter into thought as you make you decisions. Sincerely,

Abby Marion Deltona High Student
