t seems there have been issues around the First Amendment that continue to be in the news. As a publisher of a newspaper, you probably figure this amendment is near and dear to my heart. And you would be correct.
When there is a point of view we agree with, or ia majority opinion, the First Amendment is a great thing. Someone else has a point of view like yours, so tell the world. Let freedom ring. Where all this gets sticky however, is when theres strong opposition to an issue or opinion. In this day and age, this is basically the norm for most things. Its in these cases where maybe a little common sense can go a long way. The latest examples center on religious points of view. On the national stage, tempers continue to flare over the building of a Muslim community center that includes a mosque 2 blocks from the World Trade Center. The person leading the charge is the imam Feisal Abdul Rauf, who largely plays the role of peacemaker for the Muslin point of view worldwide. Hes a big picture kind of guy. A Columbia University graduate, Mr. Abdul Rauf continually denounces violence and believes an American brand of Islam could modernize the religion worldwide. He currently is on a speaking tour in the Middle East sponsored by the State Department. I could go on about his credentials, but I believe Mr. Abdul Rauf is a good man trying to do the right thing. I also believe (that First Amendment thing) the Muslin community should have the right to build a center any place they want. Its their right as Americans. Guess you figured Id be leaning that way. All that being said, I still have 2 questions. What are they thinking? Do you think maybe the families of victims from 9/11 might get upset about that location? There has to be another centrally located site for a community center in the giant NYC area. History shows us from the type of new building to construct, to the museum on the ground floor, anything having to do with the World Trade Center has been a nightmare

to get consensus. The wounds are still open. This is where the common sense part of this comes in. If the big picture is to bring people of different faiths together, why choose this location? It will only create an ongoing source of friction even for Americans with moderate views on this issue. We also have our own religion debate printed on the pages of the COURIER. Seems it centers around a readers comment last issue on our Virgin of Guadalupe story by Brenda Bolinger. Needless to say the readers comments question religion(s) in our society. If you are a believer in God, these comments could be tough to read. They were for me. But as a strong supporter of free speech (that First amendment thing again) the COURIER welcomes all points of view. We do not edit letters based on whether we agree with the opinion. I still find it puzzling sometimes when someone cancels their subscription because they didnt like a readers comment. They say we have become liberal this, or conservative that. The common sense part of me thinks, why dont you simply write a rebuttal? Wouldnt that help address your concerns to the public? The COURIER (especially our managing editor Kathryn Dunn) takes pride in being a forum for the community. Thats why we get so many letters for a newspaper our size. We publish thousands of stories, photos, columns, obituaries, comments and advertisements each year. I believe taken as a whole, this creates a variety and balance in our content. Sometimes its important to take a step backto look at the big picture.

Tennis is key ingredient of fountain of youth

oris Drucker, Shirley Harris, Jean Jackman, Noreen Kistner, Shirley Moses, Eleanor Pierson and Tina Van Zandt may have found their fountain of youth.

Every Monday and Friday morning, the ladies ranging from ages 73 to 99 spend no less than an hour on the Claremont Club tennis courts executing a multitude of forehand and backhand strokes to keep in line with their active lifestyles and strengthen their friendships. Ive been playing since I was 13 years old, said Eleanor Pierson, an 89-year-old Claremont resident. I was an original member of the Claremont Club tennis club and when I got older, I partnered with Shirley [Harris] to do this group. It is so great to be out here and it just shows us to not give up. The ladies commitment to meeting together to play tennis started approximately 10 years ago. Claremont resident Emily Gollin was instrumental in establishing the group which has had a mixture of regulars and temporary participants. As the eldest member of the group at 99 years old, Ms. Drucker fits right in with the other ladies 10 to 20 years her junior. A lifelong tennis player, the wife of the late Peter Drucker views the sport as being beneficial for several reasons. I like it and Ive played tennis all my life, Ms. Drucker said. You go for about an hour to an hour and a half and then you are through. It gives you good exercise, you get to be outdoors, and its not too strenuous. Plus, were in California playing outdoors.

group and we play twice a week. Doris [Drucker] is amazing. She is old enough to be my mother. Whenever I feel like I cant do something, I think of Doris. Ms. Harris agrees. The miracle of it all is Doris Drucker, she said. She can still hit drives, has a decent serve and a good cross-court. Though the women all have a tennis background of some sort, competition never overtakes sportsmanship. Ms. Kistner, an Upland resident, appreciates how the women in the group are accepted regardless of skill level. I was asked to join the group and I put it off for 3 months, she explained. And then I said okay but I didnt think that I was good enough. But Ive kept coming back because of the socialization, the exercise, and because you can play at your own pace. Its very competitive but very tolerant if you dont play as well. We are able to compensate for each others weaknesses.

For Claremont, no escape from the real heat of summer 2010

by John Pixley

his isnt the column I was going to write. And its certainly not about the weather.

In fact, as I sit down to write this, its supposed to be the hottest day in a heat wave, and its just not that hot. Yesterdays Los Angeles Times said that it would be in the 100s here today, but this mornings paper says the high here will be 97. And it says that today will be the hottest day of the week. Sure, it has been hot, but not with that baking heat that just seems to accumulate, when it never really cools down at night and its warm when I get out of bed in the morning and the days get hotter and hotter. I have been amazed that I have needed to put on a hoodie on more than a couple evenings. Otherwise, I end up shivering at the al fresco concerts and plays, even when Im not shirtless in my overalls. This is just fine with me. I just laugh when I hear about people in the LA area complaining about how cool this summer has been. Reportedly, this has been the coolest summer in this area since 1991. Im not complaining. Especially when I hear about all the record heat in the rest of the country and the world. Moscow, anyone? Of course, the forecast may be wrong about the next few days cooling off, or this might all change. It may be blazing when this gets in the paper. It is August, after all, the dog days of summer. And dont look now, but September Fair time, often the hottest time of year when I was growing up here in Claremontis coming. But, like I said, Im not writing about the weather. And Im not writing what I wanted to write. I wanted to write about how we Claremonters not only didnt have to put up with the usual nasty hot weatherI literally had to bundle up to watch the July 4 fireworksthis summer, but also didnt have to deal with all the dirty politics and slimy dealings that everyone else has been dealing with. I wanted to write about how the last two months have been remarkably nice and peaceful hereno raucous town hall meetings this season. I wanted to write about how, as usual, all the traumatic, dramatic news on TV and in the Times seems so far awayin another land or maybe in a summer blockbuster movieand about how this helped to make this even more of a dazy, lazy Claremont summer.

observer
We certainly werent tangled up in the Summer of Bell. Or I thought we werent. For those who have been hiding under a rock or perhaps returning from a long trek in the wilderness, this has been labeled the Summer of Bell, what with the firestorm over the reports, beginning last month in the Times, of the astronomical sums paid in salaries, bonuses, perks and what-all to officials in this tiny, working-class community south of LA. The city manager was paid double what the president gets and four and a half times the governors salary, the fire chief got not much less and each city council member was paid $100,000 per year. All this was legal, approved by the small number who voted in this town of mostly low-income, under-educated immigrants. The hefty retirement pensions due to these public servants for the rest of their lives and which the public pays for, unless a court rules otherwise, have been almost a p.s. to this story, and it was revealed last week that the city also gave sizable loans to these officials. There has been near-paniccalled healthy in most cornersin cities throughout the county, if not the country, and, indeed, like clockwork, there was a report two weeks ago in these pages that Claremont City Manager Jeff Parkers $211,150 salary and other Claremont officials earnings are right in line with county averages. Whew! But there was Steve Lopez column appearing in the Times on the same day, August 11, along with the specter of Glenn Southard. Yes, Glenn Southard, the former Claremont city manager who left Claremont in a huff in 2005 to become city manager in Indio, taking several Claremont employees with him. Reading about him was not what I was expecting, but there he was in Lopez column, titled More reason for oversight, about the very

ample pay and goodies that Indio has given Southard and his underlings in the last 5 years. It was nowhere near Bells other-worldly sphere, but it was definitely rather high up there on the hog. Maybe I shouldnt have been surprised. Look up the column on the Times website or at the library and see the big numbers the juicy details of what Southard got out of Indio, including pricey meals, travel that took staff members across the country, professional sporting events and a trip for the city managers wifeall on taxpayer-funded credit cards. Again, whew! Looks like Claremont escaped the insanity just in time! Or did it? The column left me with all sorts of nauseating memories from Mr. Southards tenure here. There were mysterious expenses charged to the city coffers (remember why Jackie McHenry ran for city council?) There were Nazi salutes at city council meetings, and the proposal to have a psychologist present to evaluate the audience. There was Mr. Southard sending out negative information about Ervin Landrums relatives after Mr. Landrum was killed by 2 Claremont police officers and then giving the officers the Employee-of-the-Year Award. There was a steady stream of lecturing and writing on how the citizens and city council should have control over the city manager rather than the other way around. Like I said, nauseating. And this is only some of what I recall. Thank goodness we got out that mess and good riddance! But wait. Were not rid of Mr. Southard. Far from it. As Steve Lopez pointed out in his column, Mr. Southard retired several months ago and is due a terrific retirement pension, based as it is on his final years salary in Indio. And, since most of his career was in Claremont17 yearswe Claremonters will be paying a huge chunk of it every month for the rest of his life. (The same goes for his assistants he took with him when he left Claremont.) Glenn Southard is probably not amused that this is being written about him. Then again, maybe he is. In any case, as he rides off into the sunset, he is definitely having the last laugh.

Creating meaning and purpose

Dear Editor: Joe Higgins comments on the Religious Visions article in the August 21 edition of the COURIER accurately portrayed the propensity of the human mind to create meaningful patterns from nonsense. I would also agree with Mr. Higgins that the devotion of so much space in the paper to the Virgin article did seem to lean toward National Enquirer status. Although Mr. Higgins points were well made, he seemed to paint religions with only a single black brush. Unfortunately, ignorance and superstition are found throughout human cultures and are not confined to, or caused by, religion, nor have religious practices only led to non-rationale acts. Religion, like most human-centered endeavors, has both a good and bad side. Religious extremists do have a concept of reality but their underlying anger and fear often twists those characterizations into bizarre, irrational and anti-social behaviors. Fortunately we live in a country that allows its citizens to explore different systems of ideas in their attempt to create meaning and purpose in their lives. Perhaps we just need to spend more time and energy in our educational system to help citizens develop in-depth critical thinking skills. Maybe then they can more consistently distinguish misinformation and dogma from logical evidence supported argument, and conceivably develop value systems that transcend single ideological doctrine and simplistic viewpoints.

Help for domestic violence victims
Dear Editor: This letter is written in response to the August 14 Police Blotter header, Two men on the wrong side of domestic abuse incidents. The header speaks to a need for education regarding domestic violence and the issues that surround the dynamic of spousal and partner abuse. Domestic violence is the willful intimidation, physical assault, battery, sexual assault, and/or other abusive behavior perpetrated by an intimate partner against another. It is an epidemic affecting individuals in every community, regardless of age, economic status, race, religion, nationality or educational background. Violence against women or men is often accompanied by emotionally abusive and controlling behavior, and thus is part of a systematic pattern of dominance and control. Domestic violence results in physical injury, psychological trauma and sometimes death. The consequences of domestic violence can cross generations and truly last a lifetime. The role of gender is a controversial topic related to the discussion of domestic violence. What is clear is that there is no right side to a domestic violence incidence, this is a family issue. A victim, man or woman, deserves immediate physical safety and an opportunity to provide a safe environment for their children. House of Ruth has played a pivotal role in providing safety and resources to victims of domestic violence. A major component of our organizations mission is directed to prevention programs and community awareness. We felt it appropriate to respond to the Police Blotter in an effort to educate and raise community awareness on the issue. For information about House of Ruths services, please telephone 6234364, the crisis hotline at 988-5559, or visit www.houseofruthinc.org.

Finally, some good news

Dear Editor: Finally some good news, and what a relief. After months of negotiations, Claremont Unified School District and the Claremont Faculty Association have agreed on a contract which eliminates the need to lay off teachers and also avoids cutting days of instruction. This contract is clearly in the best interest of students. Everyone who made sacrifices to achieve this difficult agreement, including the entire membership of CFA, deserves sincere appreciation. Most other school districts did not fare so well. Meanwhile, several recent letters to the editor have been critical of our school district because of the upcoming bond issue and a change in the school calendar. The negativity expressed in the letters is unwarranted and based on little understanding of the facts involved. The details of the bond plan have not been publicized yet, but naysayers have already denounced the plan anyway, preferring their preconceived judgments to informed reasoning. For some this is a permanent stance,

regardless of economic realities. One particularly vocal permacrit is still slamming the school district for cost increases which occurred at the time of the previous bond, when a worldwide inflationary spiral pushed up construction expenses everywhere. Before we launch into impassioned debate about the new bond, it would behoove all combatants to wait until the details are announced. Then we could proceed with a discussion based on actual information rather than ignorance and preconceived conclusions, for a change. The complaints about the change in the school calendar also indicate a pitiful lack of factual information. Several articles in the COURIER have covered the sound reasons for shifting the school year one week earlier, as well as the process involved in the decision. Unfortunately, the little permacrit contingent doesn't care about reasons or explanations. It just wants to accuse teachers and/or administrators of perpetual self interest. Lets be honest about this. School district employees do not benefit from the new calendar. The change was made for educational purposes. Perhaps the worst suggestion which has appeared in any COURIER letter this year comes from a self-styled revolutionary who encourages parents to keep their kids out of school for a week to protest the calendar change. This writer obviously does not value education very highly and has not bothered to learn anything about the positive reasons for the negotiated modification of the school calendar. There is plenty of seriously bad news out there; no need for anyone to work so hard to create more.

Richard DickCarr
A long and rewarding life as a businessman, civic supporter and generous philanthropist was completed with the death on August 15, 2010 at Mt. San Antonio Gardens of Richard Dick Carr at the age of 95. Richard L. Carr was born in Wellman, Iowa to farmers Roy and Winnie Carr on October 8, 1914. The family came to Pomona, California when Dick was 6 years of age. He attended Alcott and Washington Elementary Schools, Fremont Junior High School and was a member of the Pomona High School Class of 1932. He then attended Southwestern University where he studied accounting and law. After working for a time as a controller at Fernstrom Paper Mill, Mr. Carr started Carr Paper Company in Pomona in 1944. In 1959, he established Sentinel Container. During almost half a century in the paper industry, Mr. Carr was recognized for the solid regional business and received national note as president of the National Paper Trade Association. Mr. Carrs contributions, in addition to his business acumen, to community and philanthropic activities, were wide and deep. He was a leader, president, and served multiple terms on the boards of directors of the Pomona Valley Jaycees, Pomona Rotary, Pomona Valley Community Hospital, Pomona Valley Hospital Foundation, Pomona Valley United Way and Pomona Economic Development Corporation. For the past 20 years, they have made their home at Mt. San Antonio Gardens. Particular interests, in addition to family and friends, were traveling and playing golf. He served on the hospital board of directors for 41 years and on the hospital foundation board since its inception in 1994. He would give his opinions, often strong ones, on matters, but once a decision was made, he gave it his complete support. I miss him already. Reginald Reggie Webb, an acknowledged business leader himself, recalls: I met Dick Carr about a year after I came to town in 1985. He was a person who mentored me, who made sure that doors were opened to me. Mr. Webb, who served with Mr. Carr at Pomona Valley Hospital and at the Los Angeles County Fair Association, tells of conversations with Mr. Carr about a situation at Red Hill Country Club when members were about to vote on a raise in assessment fees. Although Mr. Carr was no longer actively golfing, he said that he would vote for the assessment because I want to leave it better than I found it. I think, Mr. Webb reflects, that of all the men Ive known, Dick Carr was a giant among them. John Jack Todd was also a friend of many years and fellow resident at Mt. San Antonio Gardens. He was very generous of his time and contributionsat the hospital. He loved the L.A. County Fair. He loved to play golf. He and Lucy contributed everywhere. They were not just passive members. Mr. Carr is survived by his wife, Lucy Carr of Mt. San Antonio Gardens; by his older sister, Elsie Close of San Juan Capistrano (Elsie was the former longtime owner of the Taco Kitchen in La Verne); by his younger sister, Lenora Trueb of Lawrence, Kansas; by his son and daughter-in-law, Richard Carr Jr. and Gail Carr of Encinitas; by his daughter and son-in-law, Dorothy and John Rountree of Claremont, and by his daughter, Barbara Carr of Irvine. Oakmont Elementary takes learning outdoors

long with the recent change in name, Oakmont Outdoor School has also successfully completed its first year utilizing a new magnet program that focuses on environmental science which will continue next year when students return to school August 31st.
Each grade level was assigned a specific ecological biome to study, and teachers integrated that information into other subject areas such as social studies, science, math, literature, music, and art throughout the year. At the culmination of the school year, each grade level took a field trip to a location that corresponded with the biome the students studied. The kindergarteners were introduced to all 6 biomes at school, and participated in a Field Study Search of the Los Angeles County Zoo, where they

identified animals in each of the worlds biomes. My favorite biome is the shrubland, because my school is there. My home is there, too. My favorite animal is the Great Horned Owl, kindergartener Zachary Martin said. The 1st graders learned about the forest biome and went on three culmination trips; they visited Mount Baldy to study a conifer forest, spent time at Oak Glen to experience a deciduous forest, and arrived at the Los Angeles Arboretum to observe a simulated rainforest. The students were taught to appreciate the forest and its trees. This year, I learned that we need our forests to give us all the oxygen we breathe. Rainforests are being cut down and we need them, 1st grader Mari Regaignon said. Second graders studied the Arctic and Antarctic biome, traveling to Sea World to explore the Arctic ecosystem at the Wild Arctic Exhibit. Comparatively, the third grade class spent a full day at the Santa Rosa Plateau learning about the grassland biome. My grade learned about the grasslands and we took a trip to a real grassland. We learned that plants with longer roots live longer, 3rd grader Cecilia Reyno said. There were bugs that made a sound like a rattlesnake and the tall grass moved and made noise that scared us. My favorite part was the pond and where we learned about the oak trees that were on the edge of the grass. The fresh- and salt-water biome was assigned to the 5th graders, who concentrated on the vernal pools at the Bernard Field Station and studied the ocean for three days on Santa Cruz Island. The students enjoyed themselves and came back to Claremont with

ample knowledge about the wildlife in the area. We learned about how the life in the ocean depends on each other and how humans can change the ocean a lot without even really realizing it, 5th grader Hayden Rodgers said. That was a great trip and we learned all about how the ocean is so important to life here on earth and how we need to protect it. Throughout the school year, the students at each grade level were asked to keep field journals, in which they documented their findings in each biome as they spent time outdoors every week. The 6th graders utilized their journals at the Outdoor Science School, located just outside of Big Bear, as they spent 5 days studying the shrubland biome. They also traveled numerous times to the Bernard Field Station, performing various field experiments with the help of their teachers. We spent a week in the mountains and learned about the shrubland and the forest. We went on hikes, did experiments in geology, plan adaptation, biology, and so many other areas. We kept track of it all in our journals, 6th grader Grace Ramos said. The time there was amazing, and since we went with Sumner School, we also got a chance to meet people we will be attending seventh grade with us at El Roble. With a very successful first year behind the school, Oakmont Outdoor School is ready to enrich its students learning experience for years to come.

Ford store helps car enthusiasts start their engines

rilles, dashboards, steering wheels, windows, engines and even novelty radiator caps. If you need an antique Ford part, this is the place to go.
With one of the most extensive collections of original and replacement parts in the country, The Early Ford Store is a treasure trove of goodies for Hot Rod enthusiasts. Owned and operated by father and son Claremont residents Bill and Mike McGrath, the shop carries nearly every Ford part imaginable from models as old as 1928 and as new as 1972. Hot Rod culture started here in Southern California, Bill McGrath said. A lot of people who are into this now grew up in the days when their mom and dad drove these cars. Walking into the shop feels like stepping back in time. Visitors squeeze past the black 1933 Ford Victoria at the shops entrance to see thousands of car parts on display. Grilles and steering wheels hang from the walls and rows of reproduction parts can keep an enthusiast busy for hours. The shop has operated for 8 years in a San Dimas building that dates back to 1910. The space where the store is located even has a historical connection to the Ford Company. In the 1920s, the shop was a Ford Service Center. The Early Ford Store is well known around the country as one of the best places to find Ford parts. The shop has been featured in Hot Rod magazine, Ol Skool Rodz as well as some foreign publications. About 10 times a year, Bill McGrath travels

around the country to antique swap meets to find parts for his store. Always searching for rare parts to add to his stores merchandise, he considers quality and quantity of selection over the costs to obtain it. Price means a little bit, but its not everything, Bill McGrath said. The main thing is to have it. Sometimes people will bring him parts that have been lying around in their garage for decades. If anyone has old parts, Im looking for them, he said. Son Mike McGrath noted how popular Hot Rod restoration is outside of the United States. During the LA Roadster Show, visitors from around the world flock to the Early Ford Store to find the Ford parts they are looking for. Its amazing how many foreign collectors there are, Mike McGrath said. Every day were shipping parts to Europe, South Africa, New Zealand, Australia and Canada. With over 5000 parts available on their website, online sales make up about 75 percent of their business sales. The highest demand is for the popular 1932-1934 and 1940 models, Bill McGrath said. The store also specializes in speed equipment to power up the original engines. The store features several restored Hot Rods on display including the 1933 Victoria, a 1929 Hotrod Coup and a 1940 pickup. In addition to operating their store, the father and son team restore antique Fords at their home in Claremont in their free time. Occasionally, finished Hot Rods can be purchased at their shop. The Early Ford Store is located at 108 West Bonita Avenue in San Dimas.
