Good design is good business
Dear Editor: The notion that good design is good business is not new. Thomas Watson, Jr. said this in the 1950s around the time he became president of IBM for the following twenty years. The importance of good design has been increasingly recognized in modern business practices as a key element of economic growth. Just ask Apple, Dyson, or the revitalized Target to name a few. Good design transcends the font of a logo, and the pitch of a roof. It can be a strategic mechanism for evolving a business practice, cultivating new clientele, or transforming public image. It is important to understand that economic development is not stumbled upon it is designed. A successful business doesnt emerge from the ashes of incendiary words one citizen uses at a city council meeting towards a commission it is created by design. There have recently been many remarks made about the efficacy of the Architectural Commission. Let us not forget the purpose of why Claremont has chosen to engage the public in the decision making process: we value the individual voice as part of the pubic process, and we collectively care about the integrity of our community. It is not by accident that Claremont has the qualities we enjoy it is by design. My hope in illustrating the business case for design is to dissolve the perception being created by some that the desire for good design precludes economic development. They are inseverable. Or evoking ones privilege to dialogue about design as part of the public process is in some way perceived as a hindrance. It simply is not. It is with the utmost care and inherent passion that by engaging in dialogue we seek to maintain and improve the quality of the built environment we are so proud to call home. Good design is good business. And good business is good for us all.

said that Duarte schools had tried this move several years ago, when her children were in school there. After 2 years of many people not showing up for the first week, they switched back to the day after Labor Day. They were losing too much money. I called the Duarte school district to try to verify this story, but the person on the phone did not know if it. She did know that the date had changed, and then changed back. Maybe it is just urban legend in Duarte, but I like the sound of it. The schools are quick to tell us parents how much money they lose if students are absent. How long will the teachers union and the district want to stick to this change if people just cant remember that school no longer starts the day after Labor Day? CUSD new start date

Dear Editor: Some people vote with their feet. I am pretty angry about the new start date for Claremont schools. I remember when that autodialer survey went around. It was difficult to hear, and I wasnt even sure that it took my vote (day-after-Labor-Day). A few other parents I spoke to had similar concerns about the survey. Thanks to Doug Lyon for telling us what the final vote was. I spoke to a coworker recently about the proposed change. She lives in Duarte and

Committee says need for bond measure is critical

ith the Claremont Unified School District boards approval of a $95 million bond measure resolution on July 22nd, there are still questions Claremont residents want to have answered before voting on November 2nd.
The Committee to Support Claremont Schools is hoping to provide the community with answers in the near future, as election day is less than 3 months away from being a reality. The bond measure needs a 55 percent approval vote to pass. Claremont residents Bill Fox, Lee Jackman and Mike Seder are the members of the newly formed committee. The 3 Claremonters were also part of the CUSD Bond/Parcel Tax Survey Committee that examined CUSD schools and advised the board to cut a potential $165 million bond down to $95 million. Michael Fay was recently named treasurer. A resident of 15 years, Mr. Fox is a real estate investor who has served on a School Site Council, CUSD Asset Advisory Board and Claremont Educational Foundation (CEF). He is also an association member of the Pomona Fairplex and has volunteered with Claremont Little League. Ms. Jackson currently volunteers with Claremont Heritage, The Childrens Fund of San Bernardino County and the American Cancer Society. She has lived in Claremont since 1958 and is concerned about the future of Claremont students. Mr. Seder has resided in Claremont for 2 decades. He has served with CEF, Claremont Youth Basketball and the San Gabriel Pomona Valley chapter of the American Red Cross.

Q&A

he COURIER recently sat down with Mr. Fox, Ms. Jackson and Mr. Seder to discuss the latest news on the bond measure.

Why a bond measure now? Mr. Seder: The need is huge. If youve been around the facilities theyre in desperate need of work. You have a state budget deficit that has taken from schools and will continue to take from schools. And then were in an environment where we have low interest rates, weve got very competitive construction costsas good as weve seen in years. The timing for this, in terms of all of those things, seems to be now. What are the specific projects and the estimated costs of each project? Mr. Fox: This project list is something that the district has been working on for a couple of years now. And this project list is something that our team a committee within our teamis working on and narrowing down. So its not ready to go out to the public yet because weve pared down a list that was $165 million to $95 million and we are really looking at what items on that list will reach the most children in the district. How will the bond money be spent? Ms. Jackman: There are 4 major categories: sustainability, modernization and repairs, technology and relieving the general fund. When you drive by our schools, they look fabulous. The lawn is cut [and] they have fresh paint on the outside. But when

you go inside, thats where you see where the needs are. Bill [Fox], Mike [Seder], and I have spent the last 4 months touring schoolsseeing where the needs are and have really been surprised at how much needs to be done. There is a lot in the schools that we dont see when we drive by and weve had a chance to see that. Mr. Fox: A lot of it is deferred maintenance because the state has cut back on the money that goes to these schools for the past few years. Deferred maintenance projects have been pushed out and alterations and repairs have been made to keep people going. Theres a lot more efficient equipment out there that can save the district money over time and things that could be applied through these bond dollars to help the district save money in the long run and help bring a lot of schools up to a current standard. Mr. Seder: And that doesnt even get into the discussion about technology. How do we provide our students in the classroom with the technology that will help them achieve? A lot of classrooms are using technology thats very old and the tools that are out there today are terrific. As a district, we are really lacking. We need to re-invest in our schools. And we need to be doing that constantly.

COURIER photo/Steven Felschundneff Members of the Committee to Support Claremont Schools, from left, are Bill Fox, Lee Jackman and Mike Seder. The committee is campaigning to build public support for the $95 million bond for Claremont Unified School District.

And if the state isnt going to help us, then we have to find out a way to do it. If the bond measure is passed, how will accountability be insured? Mr. Fox: The Oversight Committee is so important to the process. Theyre going to watch this, theyre going to report back to the board and thats going to be important in helping this process. The 3 of us wouldnt have agreed to sit on this without having something in place like this. We see that as very important. As a parent and as a taxpayer, if Im on the flip side and not part of this committee, I want to make sure that those measures are in place. Mr. Seder: I think we all want this process to be as transparent as possible and we have more tools today probably than they did for Measure Y [to do that]. And well have a website and there will be ongoing information and updates on the website.

How will you convince people who have already given to Parent Faculty Associations, made donations to the district and have contributed to the Claremont Educational Foundation that the bond is necessary? Is it too much to ask? Ms. Jackman: Its an investment and we believe in education. We believe in Claremont schools. We believe in the kids and we want to invest in that. And I dont think were in the minority. Claremont citizens really care about kids and really care about education.

police blotter
Saturday, August 7 Several residents called to report unruly behavior by a man walking near Mount Carmel Drive and San Diego Court. At 8:42 a.m., the subject was seen screaming and cussing at passing cars, kicking construction cones in the street and urinating in bushes. Officers arrived and located the man. When they asked him to stop so they could talk to him, he yelled profanities at the officers and slammed his skateboard and backpack onto the ground. When the officer threatened him with a taser gun, the man began to cooperate. Steven Pierce, 22, of Los Angeles was determined to be under the influence of alcohol and was arrested. Mr. Pierce did not tell police what he was doing in the area. Monday, August 9 A man claiming to be a child molester was apprehended by police and taken for a psychological evaluation. Around 6:30 p.m., the man appeared at a home in the 400 block of Notre Dame Road. He told a resident at the home he was a child molester and needed help. The man was still in the neighborhood when he saw a 4year-old girl nearby. Upon seeing the child, he pulled his t-shirt up over his face and told nearby witnesses that he has a problem with children. Police located the man near Arrow Highway and Indian Hill Boulevard. He appeared to be confused and could not answer basic questions from police, Lt. Vander Veen said. He repeated to police that he was in need of help. Police determined that he needed a psychological evaluation and he was transported to an area hospital for the procedure. Police also determined the man, a 29-year-old Claremont resident, has no prior criminal history related to crimes against children. Tuesday, August 10 An Upland man was arrested for marijuana possession after being falsely accused of stealing from Rhino Records in the Village. An employee at Rhino Records suspected the man had stolen merchandise and followed him out of the store. Meanwhile police were called. He was followed and located on First Street and Indian Hill Boulevard. He denied carrying anything illegal and agreed to be searched by the officer. The officer found no store merchandise, but found a plastic bag containing a small amount of marijuana. When asked why he lied about having anything illegal in his possession, he reported responded, since when is weed illegal? Because he had no identification, Joel Mayhin, 18, was arrested and later given a citation. Wednesday, August 11 A judge ruled that a 17-year-old Claremont resident who broke into a home on Morningside Drive would be tried in juvenile court rather than as an adult. On May 8, the teenager entered the home and was discovered by the homeowner inside the bedroom of his 7-year-old daughter. Police have not detailed what the teen was doing in the room but believe it was not an isolated incident.

Two men on the wrong end of domestic abuse incidents

Thursday, August 5 A woman was arrested for domestic violence after she struck her boyfriend with a metal towel rack. The incident occurred around 2:30 p.m. at the couples residence in the 4000 block of Garey Avenue. The couple is in a dating relationship and has 2 children together. As they began to argue over finances, the 32year-old female grabbed a towel rack and attempted to strike her boyfriend. She made contact with his left forearm. After the altercation, she tried to leave the home with the couples children. Police were called and arrived prior to her leaving. Alice Cruz, 32, was arrested for corporal injury to a spouse. Her boyfriend suffered scratches and bruising to his arm from the attack. Saturday, August 7 A Claremont School of Theology student was arrested for violence against her husband. The woman and her husband live in student housing at 1435 N. College Avenue. Two neighbors heard the couple arguing loudly and became concerned enough to call police. Police found the woman had pushed her husband against a wall and stuck him in the face. Xuan Gao, 22, was arrested for corporal injury to a spouse. Her husband suffered scratches on his face from being pushed against the wall. The couple apparently argued over who would make dinner and clean the dishes, Claremont Police Lieutenant Shelly Vander Veen said.

He was charged with 3 felony counts of residential burglary, assault with intent to commit sexual battery and lewd or lascivious acts with a minor. A juvenile adjudication hearing, similar to a preliminary hearing, has been scheduled for September 2 at a Pomona courthouse. The young man, who is currently being held with no bail at Los Padrinos Juvenile Detention Center, turns 18 later this month. ***

An employee of Honnold Library reported her credit card stolen while at work. The card went missing from the womans backpack sometime between 2:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. as she was shelving books. Police are investigating the crime as the credit card was later used at several Target stores in neighboring cities. Two laptops were also reported stolen from Honnold Library earlier in the week.

Grant enables students to keep their eyes on the sky

he skys the limit for Pomona College physics and astronomy students. The college recently received a $637,138 grant to upgrade the colleges telescope near Table Mountain and will play a major role throughout the construction process.
Once completed, the one-meter telescope will ap-

proach Hubble Space Telescope quality by removing the effects of atmospheric distortion using advanced deformable mirrors under rapid computer control. The project should be completed over the next 3 years. Pomona College assistant professor of astronomy and astrophysics Philip Choi will oversee student participation in the machinery construction process. Mr. Choi said the most appealing part of the grant is the large extentto which students will own the project. For the 4-year duration of their careers here, its possible for them to work in the fabrication phasewhere

theyre actually building out the hardware, the implementationwhich is mounting the instrument onto the telescope, testing the instrument and then getting acutal science results from the telescope, Mr. Choi said. The upgraded telescope will allow Pomona College to address some of the bigger questions being researched in astronomy today, such as finding life-sustaining planets, how stars are formed and what fraction of stars are born with binary systems. Students will be able to study weather patterns on other planets in our solar system, star binary systems and patterns in distant galaxies. The new equipment should improve the resolution of the one-meter telescope by 10 times by limiting atmospheric distortion, Mr. Choi said. Typically, if you get any ground-based telescope, youre not limited by the resolution capabilities of the telescope itself, youre limited by the atmosphere, Mr. Choi said. Throughout the process, students will develop skills in computer programming, engineering, designing and testing hardware and software, as well as astrophysics, Mr. Choi said. Many of Pomona Colleges physics and astronomy students go on to graduate programs in medicine, engineering and subjects in science such as climate change, Mr. Choi said. Someone who does the modeling of atmospheres of young stars can easily take those skills and model them to study weather patterns, ocean currents and the atmosphere of the earth, he said. Over the summer, several Claremont Colleges students began working on the project, including Alex Rudy 11, Rachel Chin 12, Daniel Contreras 13 and Lorcan McGonigle 13. The development stages included Pomona students Daniel Beeler 09 and Zev Gurman 11, and Harvey Mudd students Brandon Horn 09 and Oliver Hoidn 11. The National Science Foundation provided the 4year grant. The telescope is located near Wrightwood at an elevation of 7200 feet above sea level.

The call of the Greek Islands

by Jan Wheatcroft

once lived on a Greek Island. The year was about 1975. I lived there with my 2 sons for many years. They went to school with all the other Greek children. They spoke, wrote and studied in Greek. I loved living on this Greek Island. I had picked it out after visiting other islands. We had lived on Crete in a harbor village which I had loved but Crete is a large island.
Later we stayed on Lesbos but it just wasnt the right one for me. We passed Chios by. We were on a small boat and as we came close to the island of Samos we were accompanied by a fleet of dolphins who leapt and bobbed beside the boat and lead us into the harbor. We found a taxi driver and asked if he knew of a small harbor town that was nice and friendly and indeed he did. He drove us to a perfect spot, the town of Pythagorion, named after Pythagoras the mathematician. It had a perfect circular harbor and across the sea, quite close by was Turkey. And so we stayed. In those days there was only one small hotel at one end of the harbor. We found 2 rooms above a shop overlooking the harbor in a private pension. Finally we moved to a place of our own, a small garden with rooms built around lemon trees. At the end of the summer my sons entered the only school in the village after a few months of playing with local children and learning the language. My education went much more slowly. I struggled to learn a few new words each day and to put them together into understandable sentences. I set up my portable weaving loom at a vacant table harbor-side and wove, or I taught English as a second language to local children as we needed an income.

Sometimes I helped in the shops when the tourist ships came in and the town swarmed with people stopping for just a few hours. At other times I painted signs in English advertising the rental of motorbikes or helped rent the bikes to the tourists. We lived in a few other small houses and life was not expensive so we were able to survive. Sometimes we came home to California for a spell but over a period of about 7 years we went back and forth to Samos. Tourism increased, many hotels were built, people added rooms on their roof tops and rented them out. There were many changes but the town remained pretty, the motorbikes were small enough for me to ride and it was home. This summer I returned to Samos and especially to Pythagorion. It had been 20 years since I had last been there. I had been to other islands over the years but this year I felt I needed to revisit where I had spent so many rich years and had learned so much about the life in Greece. The changes I encountered were immense. I always loved the drive from the airport into the town past fields, small farms and houses with a lovely view of the sea, the rocky mountains of Turkey and the hills just above the village. These were now obscured by new hotels, gas stations, tourist shops, rent a vehicle places and fast food stops. I felt very closed in and we hadnt even

entered the town. Then there were 2 traffic signals. I had never seen a traffic signal on Samos before. I also found the area around the harbor so altered it made my heart drop. Gone were the variety of small cafes, tavernas, sweet shops and small tourist stores. Instead jammed one next to the other I saw restaurant after restaurant and bar after bar with no space to move between them. They were only distinguishable by the shape, color and size of their tables and chairs and couches. The choice of food listed was mostly the same. This shop-scape took up the entire lovely shape of the harbor. Even the tourist boats which took trips out to small beaches had grown offering the same trips with only a variety of enticements. The streets which emerged outward from the harbor and which had been filled with mostly old houses and a few restaurants and shops had also been redesigned. Where once there were gardens and fields next to houses, there were now new roads and alleys full of hotels and pensions and a few larger and newer homes. Samos has an airport which it has had for years. It brings in daily deliveries of tourists from all over Europe. It has been doing that for years. But now the airport is larger and the tourist level has risen. New hotels are being quickly built to house tour groups contracted by tourist offices from all over Europe. These rooms are not available for the casual visitor. It felt cramped and shoved together to me. I missed the casual street life of before in the different neighborhoods. Now everyone seems to go out to the local bars in the evening. The patios and gardens where they existed seemed empty. Many of the houses I remembered were torn down so I was not totally sure if I found our actual house, but I photographed myself pointing at it with a new building next door where a field had been. I was also surprised when people remembered me as I had not expected that. I had dreamed of renting a motorbike and riding

around to all my favorite mountain villages but I found that shops only rented out large motorcycles and that one had to have a motorcycle license. That left me out. So we rented a car and I was unable to find any of the places I had loved. There had been a big fire a few years past and hillsides and vineyards were burned away. I couldnt find my way as nothing looked the same. It felt like the memory of a long ago lover who remained in my mind but no longer exists in reality, even though I can still see him clearly. After 20 years my village has moved on, and the people are probably much

better off and happier with life the way it is. However I hold the past near and dear and when I no longer visit, it visits me with intensity. Am I glad that I went? The answer is a clear yes. I needed to revisit that past and bring it into my present. Will I return? I think not. There is no longer a need. In my next column I will describe an island that has retained its simplicity and old fashioned way of life while still entertaining tourists. They have taken care of themselves.

characters, said Mr. Rosenkranz. Goon Squad represents a style that Mr. Rosenkranz called hyper-real, dystopic fiction, a style that grabbed his attention after reading several works of Jonathan Lethem. Hyper-realism in literature, he elaborated, might best be understood as reality gone hyperactive, as if on over-drive; or realism enhanced by dreamlike qualities. These books give a wild, colorful ride, he commented. Lethem, who will be teaching in the Roy Disney Creative Writing Chair at Pomona College next spring, wrote, among others, You Dont Love Me Yet, Chronic City and Motherless Brooklyn (Mr. Rosenkranzs favorite). I also thought that Chronic City was a fantastic read, with deep pertinence to the overwhelming nature of information and misinformation in the modern world, which appealed to me as a librarian, said Bronx-native Mr. Rosenkranz. Currently reading: In a similar vein, Mr. Rosenkranz is now reading Super Sad True Love Story by Gary Shteyngart, another hyper-satiric/ tragic-comic novel. I couldnt wait to read this. Its extremely funny, he said. Its also wicked, so Im trying to read it before Im not allowed to anymore. Elaborating on this remark, Mr. Rosenkranz explained that the author, a Russian immigrant, will probably receive serious flack from various groups because he makes fun of just about every immigrant group, in-

Who? Adam Rosenkranz, a research librarian at Honnold/Mudd Library at The Claremont Colleges. Mr. Rosenkranz specializes in history, philosophy, religion and classics in German.

Recent reads: He recently finished A Visit from the Goon Squad by Jennifer Egan, a book rich in character development that spans a variety of genres and voices in its pages: graceful yet wild, said Publishers Weekly. I loved it. It was heartbreakingly funny in parts, said Mr. Rosenkranz, noting that among the authors inspirations were the Sopranos and the French novelist Marcel Proust, one of his favorite authors. A pervading theme in the uniquely composed novel (an entire chapter is presented in Power Point format) is the passage of time and how individual characters experience and are affected by time, particularly as related to rapidly advancing technology: speeded up, herky-jerky, instantaneous, but also full of unbearable gaps and pauses, as described in the New York Times Book Review. A deeply humane story about growing up and growing old in a culture corroded by technology and marketing, wrote Ron Charles of the Washington Post. To creatively present ideas about how people and culture change with age, and how friendships and fates fluctuate, the author interconnects numerous characters lives by moving tangential characters in a major characters story into their own starring rolea relay of stories and

cluding Russian Jews. At the same time, he continued, there are very positive characteristics in his characters, but I think he will get into trouble in a lot of ways. Mr. Rosenkranz compared the novel to hilarious versions of Brave New World (Aldous Huxley) and 1984 (George Orwell) and commented that the novel is painful to read in its disturbing picture of technology and totalitarianism. What hes talking about is coming true, he said. This novel is a great read, wrote an Amazon.com reviewer, and it will make you question your role in todays economy and forward movementwhat do we value enough not to change? Favorites: Many different books, authors, genres, styles and subjects intrigue Mr. Rosenkranz: Which is why I like being a librarian, he said. He also strives to read the New York Times on a daily basis, and Harpers Magazine every month. Typically an avid reader, the birth of his son, Eli, now 6, has influenced his book-devouring habits. Despite the ever-increasing number of pages in childrens books (many of which he considers high literature), the pages in books written for adults have been minimized. He did mange, however, to make his way through James Joyces Ulysses and Finnegans Wake while infant Eli slept on his chest. I read a few pages a night, which is probably the only way to read Joyce. Hard-pressed, as most of us are, to name his all-time favorite book, Mr. Rosenkranz spoke of his delight in Samuel Becketts trilogyThree Novels: Molloy, MalBOOKMARK: ADAM ROSENKRANZ continues on the next page

one Dies, The Unnamable. I really loved those. Theyre really out there, he said. He has this way of setting you up and then blowing everything apart. Noting that Samuel Beckett was James Joyces secretary, Mr. Rosenkranz compared the contemporaries: Beckett seemed much more lucid that Joyce, and I think I like him better. They were trying to do different things. Joyce was a maximalist, and Beckett was trying to pare things down to its essentialism. Its very, very beautiful to read. Scoring the complete works of Beckett for only 5 dollars, he intends to read it all. Mr. Rosenkranz also has a keen interest in poetry, gravitating toward James Merrill, Wallace Stevens and Belgium-born Jewish-American poet Armand Schwerner, best known for his series of poems, Tablets. Schwerner visited Mr. Rosenkranzs high school, leaving a vivid and lasting impression on him. There are lots of books that have changed my life, but I cant even begin to think of them. I just dont know where to start. Book nooks: Amazon.com and Vromans in Pasadena are favorite book-acquisition places. And, though wrestling with a love-hate relationship with technology (spurred on by the comedic, technology-as-doom novels he reads), Mr. Rosenkranz periodically thinks about getting a Kindle, a wireless reading device through which almost any book can be read in digital form. This, he notes, would maximize the number of books he can have without filling his house to overflowing. It would be nice to have for instant gratification, but

it also makes me uncomfortable because I have this attachment to the physical object of the book, and the smell. Dude, that smells like a wet sock, he reported a character in Super Sad True Love Story snarling about a

fellow airplane passengers book. That, said Mr. Rosenkranz, is basically what people think about books. And this, as a librarian, he just cannot abide.

Gaining a growing expertise with hands-on field work

he Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Garden is giving 10 college students a 10-day crash course in biology through next Wednesday.

COURIER photos/Steven Felschundneff Cal Poly Pomona student Siti Fatimah Md Isa, center, measures out a precise amount of water while working on amplification of a DNA sample Wednesday during a hands-on plant systematics and evolutionary biology workshop at Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Garden in Claremont. At left is fellow workshop member Amber Poirier.

a to give students experience working with plant systematics and evolutionary biology, the program has attracted students nationally and internationally. Addis Ababa Universitys Mekbib Fekadu traveled from Ethiopia to be part of this years workshop. This is my first time coming here [to California], Mr. Fekadu said. I dont have these types of experiences in Ethiopia but I know a person in the PhD program who did. This [workshop] is very sophisticated. Weve visited the garden, had a lecture on molecular biology, extracted DNA, collected plants and extracted more DNA. Its really interesting. Along with the laboratory and field work, the students also are taking field trips to the James San Jacinto Mountain Reserve and Laguna Beach to examine southern California habitats and floras. Most of the time during the 10-day course is spent in the laboratory where students are able to use equipment such as scanning electron microscopes to examine their plant DNA samples and record their data. The summer program is in its 2nd year after a successful debut last year. Funded by the U.S. National Science Foundation, the RSABG workshop seeks to allow undergraduate students with an interest in botany to explore that interest outside of a lecture format. Were really excited about this and well do at least one more [workshop], said Lucinda McDade, RSABG Judith B. Friend Director of Research. The neat thing is that we have students from different parts of the country and even outside the country. Its a neat experience. Southern Arkansas University professor Shawn Krosnick has worked as an instructor in the program since its start last year. She believes the workshop gives students a greater insight into the botany field. People love animals because they move, and [they] think that studying plants just involves looking at them, Ms. Krosnick said. But this is very hands-on. We focus more on the methods than the philosophy because a lot of the students can do things they have never been able to do with us. We had really good success last year when we had one student who ended up going to grad school as a result of our program. couragement of one of her professors. She has an interest in biology and has studied passifloras in her research at Keene State. Ms. Bissonnette said her experience at RSABG has been a helpful supplement to her college instruction. Its been really nice and comfortable and I feel the people have been really helpful and considerate, she said. The newest thing for me was going out into the field and collecting plants. I enjoyed having a tour of the garden and got to look at the different plants. UC Santa Cruz incoming senior Cassie Columbus hopes to become more knowledgeable about plants through the workshop. Ms. Columbus is from Clare-

mont and currently works at the local botanic garden. Ive done this stuff but Im understanding what Im doing more and Im getting to meet students from across the country, she said. Right now Im trying this out to see if this is something I want to do in graduate school. I think it makes you more interested in something if you understand what youre doing.

Claremont resident Eli Wakefield, 6, intently works on his block of plaster on Thursday during the summer science camp at Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Garden in Claremont.

Hands-on experience the key in making learning fun

small hike up through the Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Garden revealed 11 young archeologists hard at work, using tools to chip away at individual blocks of plaster.
Were looking for minerals! announced Thomas Aguirre, 9. The miniature dig was just one of several activities during the 2-week summer camp taught by Champions Science Adventures. Each week, a new theme is introduced. This first week wraps up the Mystery of the Pharaohs Treasure; next week, the kids will build their own robots in Gizmos Robot Factory. The camp is designated for ages 5-12, with a half-day option running from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. and a full-day option from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. There are several experiments and activities throughout the day. Champions Science Adventures has 4 different themes: Mystery of the Pharaohs Treasure, Go Wild, Gizmos Robot Factory and Space and Rocketry. The camp runs for 2 weeks, with 2 themes taught per camp in different locations. This is the first time the camp has been held at the Botanic Gardens. The best thing is that its all hands-on, said Maria Andrews, affectionately called Mrs. A by her class. Some kids learn through books. Some like to get their hands dirty. This first week allowed the group of 11 to learn about minerals and rocks with the help of Gizmo-Tep the Gecko, who is exploring in Egypt. Gizmo-Tep sent the children different clues and hints about rocks to find 3 keys. This helped them find the right key that will open the door to the treasure in the lair of the Sphinx. You get to make ancient decoders, Thomas Aguirre said, and play with K-nex. You also make explosions with chemicals, added Cayten Gardner, 10. Theres a mystery in every session.

Next week, at Gizmos Robot Factory, the kids will build their own robots that will challenge each other at the end of the week. As the kids add pieces, a new concept will be introduced. With the arms, theyll learn about balance, explained Ms. Andrews, With the eyes, Galileo. Having been with the program for 6 years, Ms. Andrews is always amazed to see the growth of the kids and how much they are able to absorb from the 2-week sessions. Its interesting. And thats what makes it fun.

Safe discard of used batteries available at library

he Claremont Libary is the newest area dropoff point for used household batteries.

A plastic tube stucture has been constructed just outside the western enterance of the library where used batteries can be properly recycled.

This is a great program to keep dangerous material from batteries out of our landfills, Claremont Library Manager Don Slaven said. Metals and acids are contained within a batterys casing. If the casing is broken or opened, dangerous elements such as lead, mercury, cadmium and other elemental metals, can leak out. If batteries end up in municipal land-

fills, the dangerous material can leak into water and soil around landfills and in incinerator air emissions or ash waste. The battery recycling program is sponsored by the Los Angeles County Department of Public Work. Many other libraries throughout Los Angeles county also have battery drop off locations. Mayor Pro Tem Sam Pedroza, who works for the Sanitation District of Los

Angeles County, pushed to get the drop off point set up at Claremonts library. A lot of people dont realize the toxic results that household batteries can create in local landfills, Mr. Pedroza said. This is one way we can begin to address that problem.
