net URGENT: Devastating CA budget proposal

Oh, don't even get me started on that. We have no court reporters in Civil Courtrooms anymore. We have to bring our own. It costs $200 to bring someone for a 5 minute hearing. Sherry Anne Lear Attorney at Law 3828 Carson Street, Suite 100 Torrance, CA 90503 (310) 303-7950 Fax: (310) 316-0324 ------------------------ Original Message ----From: <mailto:Belmontje@aol.com> The huge rise in the cost of transcripts have hurt many in family court. This increase will exacerbate the trend, making it hard for the economically disadvantaged to get justice. In a message dated 6/6/2013 9:48:54 A.M. Pacific Daylight Time, admin@janbtucker.com writes: Sacramento Bee Forum section addressing "Media access to court documents: Priceless". The executive editor, Joyce Terhaar, addresses the doubling of copy fees in California courts to $1.00/pg. and a fee of $10 to have a records pulled with the media being exempted from this charge.

This is from Governor Brown's proposed budget. This will screw people who already can't already can't afford the cost of litigation. It will shaft everybody going to get a copy of their child support order or and divorce decree or the restraining order that protects them from their ex..... It will shaft attorneys, private investigators, and civil rights groups trying to do pro-bono or low cost work for their clients. The CA Newspaper Association has already stated that they will oppose this even if they are granted an exemption. The California Association of Licensed Investigators is taking the same position because an exemption for PI's will not even help in many circumstances even if they could get one into the budget bill. I am requesting that all Same Page Coalition organizations take an OPPOSE position to this bill. No amendments in my opinion can do anything to make it reasonable. It is also unconstitutional: California made the right to public records a constitutional right and making people pay for their constitutional right is no more reasonable than making people pay for the right to vote, the right to read, or the right to talk. Let me know if you agree or disagree with your organization taking an OPPOSE position and any other comments. This is urgent. Jan B. Tucker J.B. Tucker & Associates, PI-10143 P.O.
