Bryan Man Sentenced to 14 Years for Domestic Violence

Bryan, TX Larry Don Haley, 48, was sentenced to 14 years in prison today for assaulting a girlfriend in 2009. During the trial, the victim, who is still close with Haley, testified that he never assaulted her. A jury found Haley guilty of the Assault on May 10, and the case was rescheduled for the sentencing phase on June 6 7. The Assault was enhanced to a felony because Haley had previously been convicted of Domestic Violence Assault in 2005. Punishment was assessed by Judge Travis Bryan of the 272nd District Court. In addition, Haleys punishment range was enhanced to a maximum of 20 years in prison because he had previously been to prison in connection with a conviction for Burglary of a Habitation with Intent to Commit Sexual Assault he committed in 1993. During the punishment phase, the court heard evidence of Haleys prior criminal conduct. With regard to the 1993 Burglary, the Court heard evidence that Haley went to the home of a male acquaintance and found the mans wife home alone with her children. Haley went into the home and broke down the door of the bathroom where the woman was. The woman fought him, scratching his face and he left. Haley was apprehended by the Caldwell Police Department and admitted his guilt. Haley initially received 10 years probation for that case in Burleson County in 1993. In 1995, Haley was arrested for two DWIs and, as a result, his Burglary probation was modified and he was required to go to a lockdown rehab facility for 11 months. Then in 1997, Haley was arrested for another DWI, as well as a Criminal Mischief for ramming a vehicle with his truck during an altercation involving a girlfriend. Following those arrests, his Burleson County probation was revoked and he was sentenced to 8 years in prison. Evidence was presented that since 1990, Haley had committed 7 DWIs, and assaulted several women. His most recent DWI was in January of 2013 and followed an incident where, according to witnesses, Haley fired a gun during an altercation at a bar in Bryan.

The case was prosecuted by Assistant District Attorneys Ryan Calvert and Misty Swan.
