Cambridge University Engineering Department PART IIA Additional Notes in using ABAQUS - Mechanical CAD/CAM

Notes Week 4

1 Spool-Valve Analysis
Rounds and lleting is possible in ABAQUS CAE. Select the Part Module and then SHAPE Blend Round/Fillet and then follow the instructions at the bottom of the viewport area. If this does not work then do the lleting and adding rounds in ProE. It is also possible to extrude and make cuts using SHAPE Extrude and SHAPE cut respectively.

2 Motor Cover Analysis

Import the cover part into ABAQUS. Check that the diameter of the cover is 175. Use Tools Query Distance. This will be in mms but ABAQUS does not have any units. It is the users responsibility to work using a consistent set of units. For example : (Length - mm, Force - N, Stress, pressure, Youngs modulus = MPa, density T onnes/mm3 ). Create Material properties and create a solid section and assign the section to the cover. In Assembly Module create an instance. Step Module create a step : Static, General In Mesh module assign a seed of 6 mm to the cover. Loads Module : Fix either the base of the three tabs or the inner surface of the three tabs in all three directions. To apply the out-of-balance load of the shaft you need to partition the inside of the neck for a width of 10 mm. First of all choose a direction for this out-of-balance load (3225 Newtons which will be applied as a pressure). This direction of the loading should be such that it tests the weakest section of the cover. Therefore it should not be in line with any of the tabs. For the original cover it will be across the direction of the ventilation grille. Create datum planes which are 10 mm apart. 1

For a redesigned cover choose a direction which is not in line with any of the tabs. You need to create a datum axis (vertical through the center of the cover)( ). Then another vertical plane through that axis( ). Then create a plane at an angle to the vertical plane. For this click and hold on the icon ( ) and then from the menu of icons select the icon( ) Then create two more planes either side of this plane which is 10 mm apart (use offsets of +5 and -5 on the plane created). In Figure 3 line aa indicates the axis and bb the plane through the axis (in the direction of the vertical axis). Line cc represents the plane with the appropriate rotation for the direction of loading. dd and ee - the planes to make the partition. Partition only the surface and not the cell. Allowing for fatigue failure you need to get the maximum stress level down to about 16 MPa for the redesigned cover.
