SensoryExtraisapioneeringsessionforpeoplewithcomplexlearningdifficultiesanddisabilities(CLDD) Unlikeatraditionalmusicsession,theExtrasessiondoesnothaveasetstructureinsteadoffering participantstheopportunitytoexplorearangeofdifferentmusicalandsensoryactivitiesattheirown pacealongsidetheirsupportworker. Theactivitiesinclude: iMUSEaninteractivemusic,sound,visualandvibrationstimulationexperiencetailoredtothe individualneedsofthepersonthathasbeenrecognisedasoneofthemostexcitingnewnon interventionistapproachesforworkingwithpeoplewithCLDDbytheSpecialistSchoolsand AcademiesTrust. ApolloEnsemblebypressingarangeofswitches,participantscanheardifferentsoundsand seepictures FXunit&GForceamplifiesthesoundsthatparticipantsmakeinamicrophonesoeventhe smallestsoundcanbeheard.WithGForcegivesparticipantsvisualfeedbacktoencouragetheir vocalisations. Theaimofthesessionistoofferparticipantsarangeofdifferentstimulitoengagethem,andhelpthem toworkwiththeirsupportworkerstofindthingstheyenjoy,therebystrengtheningtherelationshipand developinginteraction. SessionstakeplacewithadultseachFridaymorning(46weeksayear)andwithchildrenonalternate Saturdaymorningsduringtermtime.AAMislookingtorecruitartiststojoinourspecialistfreelance teamtotakethesessionforward,andinparticularthosewithaninterestincommunicationwho coulddevelophowwecurrentlyusethetechnologyandothersensoryresourcestoenhancenonverbal communicationandinteraction.Forthisreasonwewouldwelcomeapplicantsfromarangeof backgrounds(includingmusictherapy)whoareinterestedinbranchingoutanddevelopingtheirskills. Hands&VoicesisoneofthefirstsingingandsigningchoirsintheUKthathasbeenrunningforover15 years as a means of enabling people with learning and communication difficulties to take part in music throughtheuniquecombinationofsingingandsigning. An exciting opportunity has opened up for vocal leader/s to join AAMs small team of specialist singing andsigningconductors. Hands & Voices is a fully inclusive community choir that is open to anyone, whether they have a disability and meets each Wednesday evening during term time. The choir started with a handful of members at the start and it is now 50strong. Repertoire covers a range of musical genres with a significant amount of material being devised during the weekly rehearsals. Hands & Voices are in great demandfortheirenthusiasticandinspirationalperformancesandgivebetween6and10performances ayear,whichprimarilytakeplaceinYorkandthesurroundingarea. Signing is an integral aspect of the choir, enabling people who may have difficulty expressing themselvesvocallytocommunicatemoreeasily.Forthisreasonanequalweightingisplacedonsigning duringtheweeklyrehearsals.Trainingwillbeprovided. Choirsforhearingimpairedpeoplearewellknown,buttheHandsandVoicesstyleofcombiningsinging with signing is less usual because it empowers people with a wide range of disabilities to reap all the benefitsassociatedwithbeingpartofachoir,aswellasbeingagreatfunthingtodo. Anidealcandidatewouldneedtodemonstrate: Experienceofleadingvocalworkshopswithgroups,inparticularthosewitharangeoflearning andcommunicationdifficultiesanddisabilities; Experienceofsigningisdesirable(trainingwillbegiven); Experienceofdevisingandsongwritingwithlearningdisabledgroupsisdesirable(trainingwill begiven); Experienceofcomposingbackingtracks,isdesirable(trainingwillbegiven); Flexibility,creativityandexcellentpeopleskills; BeingbasedinYork/NorthYorkshireisdesirable. Due to the specialist nature of our work we estimate that the successful applicant/s will need to shadow our existing Music Leader/ Conductor for a period of time prior to taking up position. The amount of time will be determined by each applicants level of experience.
