or the last couple of years Ellen Kok, a photojournalist, has been recording the activities of our JROTC Program with the intent to create a book about the program. I am excited to announce the project has been completed. At the end of April, Major Cenney traveled to the Netherlands to attend an exhibit of the book Cadets which began on May 2, 2013. During his time abroad, the book brought a tremendous amount of interest about how we fulfill one of our core values Citizenship. Please join us when we host a presentation of the book at FMRHS on Tuesday, June 4, at 7:00 PM. Everyone is welcome. The school districts technology department and staff at FMRHS have been working hard to finalize procedures to place in the hands of all high school students Lenovo Notebook computers next year. Two dates of interest are: August 19 and August 24. On these dates students will be able to pick up their device after the appropriate paperwork has been completed. Be on the look out for additional information over the summer.

A Message from the Assistant Principal

The Home Stretch
At this writing, there are 14 days of school, even fewer for seniors. These are some of the most important days for our students as we draw closer to the end of another school year. Recently, juniors participated in the science portion of the NECAP Assessment. In addition to this testing, our students participated in a pilot test for the soon-to-be used Smarter Balanced State Assessment. This test will replace NECAP testing in the future. During these testing days, students and staff learned a lot about the online testing environment which will enable us to have a smoother transition to this type of state assessment. The cooperation of students and staff made this experience a positive one. In May, students spent an evening at the prom. This years theme was Midnight Masquarde and was held at Alysons Orchard in Walpole. Our students presented themselves well and demonstrated the core values of our school--Respect, Responsibility, Integrity and Citizenship. Congratulations to the Prom Committee and their advisors, Ronna Gendron and Jacquie Walker, for another successful prom. The end of the year is often an exciting time for both students and staff as we look forward to upcoming events--field trips, sporting events, concerts, senior activities--and, of course, summer break. Some may tend to begin coasting toward the finish line as things begin to wind down; however, I encourage everyone to keep their focus for a strong finish to the school year.

Next year will see many changes and improvements to our school from the implementation of the 1:1 Initiative to an adjustment to our schedule. These efforts will enable our students to learn valuable skills, remain engaged and receive support in their learning throughout the school day. I, for one, am looking forward to these changes as we all work together toward our goal of providing a quality education for the children in our communities. I hope everyone has a restful summer break and returns to Fall Mountain in late August with a renewed energy for the new school year.

There are still colleges with openings. See your counselor if you have decided late to apply. Go to www.nebhe.org for a list of New England Colleges and Universities still accepting students. Last Reminder for Senior Men: Once you reach your 18th birthday, you must register with the Selective Service (www.sss.gov) in order to be eligible for any student aid. A reminder to all seniors who have been accepted to a number of colleges, please notify in writing those colleges you are declining. In addition, it is important to write thank you notes to all scholarship donors who awarded you money.

JUNIORS All juniors have met with their guidance counselor regarding post-secondary plans. For those students considering college, our general advice would be to think about majors and compile a list of schools of interest. Use the summer to visit colleges and arrange for tours. It is important to visit colleges before you commit to spending two to four years of your life there.
Juniors should also plan to take or retake the SAT Reasoning Test in October or November of their senior year. Check competitive schools to see if they require SAT Subject Tests and take up to three subject tests in October or November. Students can register online at collegeboard. com. Students applying to competitive colleges may also want to consider ACTs in October. You can find information and register at act. org. ALL STUDENTS Parents and students, keep in mind that completed schedules for the 2013-14 school year will be mailed home in early August. You are encouraged to call the guidance office if you have any questions or concerns regarding the scheduling process at 835-2917.

Student of the Month

Criteria for selection as FMRHS Student of the Month is cooperation, attitude, consideration for others, academic effort (creative thought and curiosity), attendance, and contribution to community and school life. Students are nominated for this monthly award and voted on by the staff.

Senior Jeffrey Earl has been selected the FMRHS June Student of the Month. Jeffrey was nominated for his exceptional work ethic and leadership. Hes a positive influence and has been an excellent role model in the agriculture department programs. Jeffrey has been on the honor roll all four years. He is active in FAA and is a Completer in both Animal Science and Horticulture. Jeffrey has participated in Indoor and Outdoor Track & Field and is currently active in community service. He has participated in a 5k walk for Stepping up to End Violence along with road-side trash removal. Jeffrey works as a Sales Associate at Walgreens in Walpole. After high school, he plans to take a year off from school before pursuing a degree in either landscape architecture or as a psychology counselor. Congratulations, Jeffrey!

FINE ARTS
Research & Artwork by Spring 2013 Art 1 Students The Art 1 classes have been hard at work this semester creating a living museum throughout the high school. Weve been learning about our history on this planet and how it has shaped the art of cultures around the globe. Then we take what weve learned and create original works based on the methods and ideas of each culture. We started off the year by studying the caves at Lascaux, France, and creating a cave of our own with recycled materials and turned a 20 foot length of hallway into an interactive cave, complete with stalactites, stalagmites and cave paintings. Next, we studied the art and culture of ancient Egypt, creating our own sculptures & hieroglyphic panels. Ancient Greece, Rome and China followed with art demonstrating thier respective cultures.

The discovery of the Americas by Europeans was the central point of research for our next grouping of projects demonstrating the artistic shift from the Gothic & Romanesque periods into the Renaissance, as well as the rich cultural heritage of the Meso-American people who first met with European invaders. Next up was an exploration of North American native cultures that included a collaborative work on a full-size Lakota-style tipi, along with a host of other research-driven, student-selected projects. Other projects involved researching the arts of Japan, India, and Southeast Asia. Students created bonsai, with hand-made ceramic containers and tiny people and buildings to populate their miniature landscapes. Some students explored the Javanese dye technique called batik and a few others examined Hindu-inspired art from India and created their own paintings based on the symmetry, vivid colors and iconography of Indian works. Our final projects revolve around modern European painting (post-1870) and contemporary American art. STUDENT ARTISTS EXHIBIT AT WALPOLE GALLERY The Walpole Artisans are proud to announce their second annual Student Show, featuring Fall Mountain Regional High School art students in May and June at their Cooperative Gallery at 52 Main Street in Walpole. Three students have been selected for their artwork which will be on display from May 19th-June 15th -- Tyler Brown, RoseAlaina Leone and Allura Lincoln.

Hello and welcome back! This will be the last newsletter of the year, and by far the most exciting. In the month of May we held six of our Memorial Day Parades in North Charlestown, Charlestown, Walpole, Acworth, Langdon, and Alstead. Our banner marchers, firing detail, color guards, and marching units were exceptional and we thank everyone who participated in these events. A special event is taking place on June 4, and it will surely be a milestone for everyone involved. On June 4, 2013, Ellen Kok will be presenting her world renowned book Cadets. It was recently published in the Netherlands, and this will be the release of the book in the United States. We would like to openly invite everyone who is interested to this spectacular and once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. The event will take place at Fall Mountain Regional High School in the auditorium. HOST FAMILIES NEEDED FOR SPANISH TEENS THIS SUMMER Host families are needed for a group of students from Spain who will be spending 3 weeks in New England this summer to improve their English and experience American family life.These boys and girls, who range in age from 14 to 17, arrive June 26 and depart on July 21. Lets go Fishing is part of the New Hampshire Fish & Game Departments Aquatic Resources Education Program. It is a course designed to teach youth and adults about basic warm water fishing.
