Lab: Exploring the Lab Scenario

Lab Scenario

Contoso Ltd. is an international corporation that produces and sells pharmaceuticals. Contoso currently has two branch offices in addition to their main office. The company is pursuing an aggressive expansion plan, and will be adding two new office locations during the Active Directory design and deployment project. Contosos current Active Directory environment consists of a single AD DS forest that only has domain controllers running Windows Server 2008 R2. The organization deploys all domain controllers in a single AD DS site.

Contoso has just completed the purchase of two companies: A. Datum Corporation and Trey Research. A. Datum is currently running an Active Directory directory services deployment in Windows Server 2003, and Trey Research is running an AD DS deployment in Windows Server 2008 R2. As part of this project, the A. Datum and Trey Research Active Directory environments need to integrate with the Contoso AD DS environment.

1-29

Upper management at Contoso has made the Active Directory design and deployment project a high priority. The company wants to ensure that the Active Directory infrastructure provides sufficient capacity and flexibility, so that it can expand rapidly into new business areas or locations. As the company expands into multiple locations around the world, it will be increasingly important for the organizations users to collaborate easily by using a variety of technologies. Many users, such as sales personnel, spend most of their time outside of the office, and it is critical that these users can gain access to internal network resources and applications from anywhere. The Active Directory infrastructure that you design and deploy must enable the organization to meet its expansion goals, but the design also must minimize the cost of deploying and maintaining the infrastructure. Contoso Ltd. has gained a competitive edge over other pharmaceutical companies by maintaining very tight control over expenditures, and this continues to be a requirement. Additionally, due to the nature of Contosos business, the Active Directory design must provide a very high level of security.

As part of the Active Directory design and deployment project, you also need to address current issues with the Active Directory deployment. Internally, it sometimes takes a long time for users to log on to the network. Additionally, some applications, such as Exchange Server, do not perform adequately. A recent review of service-desk calls revealed that a large percentage of the calls dealt with users making changes to their desktop computers or installing applications on their computers that were not required for business tasks. The organization needs to control the desktop environment of users more tightly. Additionally, a recent security audit for the organization noted that many administrators had more administrative permissions than required to perform their jobs.

1-30 Overview of Active Directory Design

Exercise 1: Exploring the Contoso Ltd. Scenario

The main tasks for this exercise are: 1. 2. Review the lab scenario. Identify key requirements and constraints for the Active Directory design.

X Task 1: Review the lab scenario

Read the lab scenario content in the student manual.

X Task 2: Identify key requirements and constraints for the Active Directory design
1. 2. 3. Document key requirements that you will need to address in the Active Directory design. Document key constraints that you will need to address in the Active Directory design. Be prepared to discuss your answers.

Results: After this exercise, you should have reviewed the Contoso Ltd., lab scenario, and then documented key requirements and constraints that you will need to address in the Active Directory design.
