Burris IT Rolled Out the BJs Scanning Project to All 3 DCs !

fter months of development and testing, Burris IT is currently partnering with Team Members in Rocky Hill to roll out the new BJs Weight Scanning Project for our three DCs that service the BJs business - Rocky Hill, Elkton and Orlando. Prior to this project, the weight capture process involved BJs capturing case weights for certain items (via BJs Scanners) on our shipping dock before loading the truck. Once collection was complete, they then sent Burris the weight information in a file to process in V4 and then follow with posting the load. After this project is finalized, Burris selectors will capture the case weights at time of picking and Burris will send a file containing the weight information to BJs upon posting the load. In addition to the weights, the selectors will also capture the date of the product (i.e. sell-by date, packaging date). In order to do real-time validation, the existing date override process (a manual spreadsheet driven process) will be replaced with BJs setting up the date approvals in V4 before the picking begins. As with any improvement, the benefits will require the operational teams to get used to some change in processes. This project came about when BJs and Burris discovered that allowing Burris to capture the weights for product and eliminating the current BJs weight capture process could greatly increase productivity in the operational flow of warehouse processes for these

three large warehouses. Though weight collection is a service Burris already provides some of our other customers at other Burris locations, this is a very significant change in the way we do business with BJs. The project has undergone considerable development and was

piloted in February with a single club in Rocky Hill to observe the new processes in action without disrupting the entire operation. THANK YOU to our Rocky Hill team for your willingness to take on a new project! From warehouse selectors to management, the RH team has really stepped up to take on the new challenge with enthusiasm and a real lets Get it Right attitude. Now that development, testing, and pilot are complete, the project is currently rolling out a few clubs at a time in Rocky Hill and will soon be coming to Elkton and Orlando next week! There are a number of positive aspects of Burris taking over weight scanning from BJs. The most noticeable may be the improved dock flow created by moving the task of scanning off the dock and into the aisle. Also, by having the same person collect the weight as picking the product, discrepancies between picking and scanning (scanner missing a scan because 1 of 3 cases is

on a different pallet) will be eliminated. Ultimately, the overall warehouse processes are simplified by this new functionality. In addition, Burris shipping clerks will no longer have to depend on the arrival of the weight scan file from BJs in order to close a load. The Burris Team Members who will experience the most significant change with this project are our selectors in Elkton, Orlando, and Rocky Hill. Previously, selectors would SPEAK the check digit for a selection bin, SPEAK the number of cases prompted to pick, and move to the next pick. This will not change aside from those items requiring weight and date collection (mostly meats and similar items sold by weight). For these, the selector will either scan each case with a wrist scanner or SPEAK the appropriate date into the Talkman and depending on the item, usually speak the weight as well. There are some other considerations Burris will take into account with the BJs Weight Scanning Project. This includes additional control/audit points to ensure accuracy of the weights and dates collected as well as adjusting the ELS standards for these new types of pick jobs. Burris will be more concerned with vendor bar code compliance since not having scannable barcodes will slow down our selectors by causing them to SPEAK weights and dates. Your Questions About HPWP - Answered!

By Sarah Lauzen
Over the last few years Burris has adopted the HPWP consulting program as the main vehicle to drive our company culture. I have overheard a lot of questions from team members, and I wanted to do a quick post to hopefully shed a little light on HPWP and its place in the Burris Culture. on these employees (rather than the marginal 5%) every efficiency improves. HPWP Consulting. After looking into the program, we were struck by how similar the HPWP elements were to the Burris culture sheet that Bob and Donnie put together over 10 years ago. With the company rapidly growing, they realized that HPWP is the perfect vehicle to drive the culture to all of our locations and to reach all of our team members.

What we are trying to accomplish by implementing HPWP?

Our goal at Burris is not to be the biggest - we want to be the best. This saying goes for the business itself as well as a place of employment. In some cases we might not be able to be the highest paying job but we can certainly be one of the best places to work. Our goal is to make Burris an organization that our team members are proud to be a part of and enjoy coming into work everyday.

What is HPWP?
HPWP stands for High Performance Work Place. This program is designed to help organizations maximize workplace performance by focusing on 8 key elements: 1. Positive Assumptions about People 2. Identification and Elimination of Negatives 3. Open, Two-Way, Adult-to-Adult Communication 4. Employee Involvement 5. Mutual Trust and Respect 6. Training 7. Competitive Wages and Benefits 8. High Expectations This non-traditional work culture is based on the belief that approximately 95% of

What is the future of HPWP at Burris?

Currently we have had over 283 leaders go through the week-long HPWP training and we are not done yet! The goal is to send as many leadership team members through the week long training as possible. It will be their responsibility to bring the training to their teams at their locations, spreading the HPWP training and the Burris Culture throughout all facilities. Have questions? Please feel free to email Laura McCann, Director of Team Member Relations, at lmccann@burrislogistics.com

Is HPWP the new Burris culture?

THANK YOU
The short answer is NO. To explain this, you need to know a little history about where the Burris culture came from. As far back as 2003, our then CEO, Bob Burris, and our current CEO, Donnie Burris (father and son/ 4th and 5th generation of Burris family leaders of the company), sat down to layout a one-sheeter of what they wanted the culture at Burris to be. That meeting produced the Burris culture sheet and the Burris culture was born! A few years ago Burris learned about

BURRIS ANNOUNCEMENTS

Sussex County Habitat for Humanity announces new partnership with Burris Logistics and Brendon T. Warfel
November 13, 2012 On October 26, 2012, Kevin Gilmore, Executive Director of Sussex County Habitat for Humanity (SCHFH) announced that Burris Logistics and Brendon T. Warfel Construction will be joining together in partnership to build a Habitat home next year in the Milford area. This exciting announcement took place during the annual employee appreciation picnic and provided the perfect opportunity to share the good news with both Burris and Warfel employees. Gilmore said, Brendon T. Warfel and Burris Logistics are both successful community-minded companies with strong ties to the Milford Community. They are able and willing to engage their networks in helping a family with housing and building hope and community in the process. Kevin Gilmore spoke to those in attendance about how Habitat partners with others to make the dream of homeownership a possibility. He said, Habitat is not a give-away program. Rather it gives people a hand-up not a hand-out! Every adult in the family contributes 250 hours of hard work, sweat equity to building on their home and other projects too. Tom Protack, Director of Community Engagement for SCHFH, encouraged the employees to think of creative ways they and their family and friends can participate in this partnership. Protack said, no doubt, you will be giving the gift of homeownership so that a Milford family will have a decent, safe and affordable place to live and raise their families. As the walls of their house go up, so many other walls of anxiety, worry and doubt come down. The next step for this project is to seek donated land. Burris, Warfel, and Sussex County Habitat are reaching out and searching for a donated lot in the From L to R: Donnie Burris, Kevin Gilmore and Brendon Warfel Milford area. The next step in the cannot be donated, Habitat will use process will be to advertise for partner funds raised for this build to pay for the family applicants. At the same time, work that cannot be reasonably done homebuyer applications are being by volunteers. The build schedule will accepted. They are excited and are anxious to get started. We will have several build days and special events to keep the momentum going. Maggie will plan and coordinate the team members volunteer days, fundraising and special events. Brendon Warfel explained the goal will be to start construction in the Spring of 2013. With Brendon volunteering as the house construction leader, both he and Burris will invite people and companies in their networks to give their time and materials to reduce the cost to build this house. The build schedule will include donated services of trades people. If it homebuyer (Partner Family) and provide support and guidance to both partners during the entire build. n November 14th, 2012, the Lyndhurst facility went three years without a lost time accident. This is an outstanding achievement by the entire Lyndhurst team! One thousand and ninety-five days, one shift at a time, each team member on every shift one common goal: to have everyone go home at the end of the work day as safe as when they arrived. When everyone is accountable for their decisions and their actions, the entire team, and any visitors or contractors at our facility, benefit by a safer working environment.

he Lyndhurst management team is extremely proud of the accomplishments of the team, and that safety is placed at the forefront of all tasks completed. A cook-out for all was held to commemorate the event, and the general manager met with shifts on the dock for a meeting to discuss the significance of the milestone and how important it is for everyone to keep their focus going forward. The efforts of every team member contribute to the success of the team as a whole, and in order to commemorate this milestone, a banner was made that included everyones name. It now hangs in the warehouse along with other achievement banners that line our Made It Happen Avenue. We are diligently working on keeping everyone safe one day at a time. Congratulations to all Lyndhurst team members for keeping the streak alive! Written by Bill Weeks | Safety & Compliance Manager

From the Worlds Largest Sand Trap

Written by Bill Weeks | Safety & Compliance Manager My friend really came through for the guys, as he sent several complete sets of golf clubs, a lot of golf supplies, and a portable DVD player. We also wanted them to know how proud many Americans back home are of them, so we designed a Thank You sign which was sent to them. This sign can be seen at the beginning of this article, and in the group shot taken at the course. The 191st Combat Sustainment Support Battalion is stationed at Camp Arifjan, Kuwait, and provides support for Operation Enduring Freedom. Michael Nunley, who serves in the Battalion, coordinated the logistics of putting on the tournament. After the tournament took place in January, Michael sent me the following e-mail: Bill, Through the years, Burris Logistics has a proud history of supporting our men and women who serve worldwide in our non-alcohol has got them very excited. I believe I will have enough gifts now so that everyone may receive something. Which is great because those are the things and memories that they will hold on to. I will have my photographer Publicity Media Specialist there taking photos to include a group photo which I will be sending copies to you guys following the tournament. Please include an address so that we can send photos and thank you letter. Yes, we had a great day of golf. Everyone really enjoyed getting out and being on grass. The owner of the course put on a great meal for us afterwards. Lots of near beer, cigars, and just a great day on the course. Absolutely everyone appreciated the donations and award ceremony following. Again, thank you for all your support to the troops.

Armed Forces. These people, both past and present, have dedicated themselves to serving on the front line of defending our freedoms and our way of life, and they ask so little in return from us in doing so. Our soldiers, and their families, deserve our respect and gratitude; and when we can do something to make their lives a little more comfortable or a little more enjoyable, we owe it to them to never forget the work or sacrifices they do on our behalf on a daily basis. Last December, a good friend of mine mentioned in passing that his brother was putting together a golf tournament for his Army battalion in Kuwait. At the time, they had access to the only golf course in the country, the Kuwait International Golf & Country Club, but not much else in the way of club sets and other golfing supplies. Since the event would not be sanctioned by the Morale, Welfare, & Recreation, they were on their own to come up with enough equipment for the twenty-plus people who were going to participate. There was a sense of urgency, as the tournament was scheduled to take place in less than 30 days and take place half-way around the world. With the full support of Mike Piscitelli, Lyndhurst General Manager, we decided to donate golf supplies and prizes that could be awarded to players during the tournament. Supplies included golf balls, tees, hand towels, and hats. Prizes included ten I-Tunes song download cards.

Thank you so much for all the efforts you, Burris, and Bob (Mikes brother) have put forth for our Soldiers. The Guys here are really excited. This will be the first time most of them have put their feet on grass since arriving in July. I have a range of players, some of which have never played. Just the idea for them to get out and spend a day walking on grass in civilian clothes, getting off the compound, and enjoying a cold beer even if it is

During the course of our busy work and personal days, we can often forget to take the time to appreciate the small things in life, such as being able to walk on grass or having the down time to just unwind. Please take a moment to remember our men and women who serve at home and abroad, and take the time to support them in whatever capacity presents itself. Without them, our lives would be so very different. Check out the course at: http:/ /www.kigcc.com/ (go under the Photos tab & scroll through, and from the aerial shots youll see why this place could be called the worlds largest sand trap.)

Burris New Castle prepared for Emergency Situations

Visitors and team members at New Castle can feel safer because of our commitment to safety In December 2012, Burris New Castle held our first Ammonia Evacuation Drills. At the sound of the alarm, our team members diligently followed the instructions given to them. Each team member reported to their designated pre-evacuation area and waited for further instructions. Upon receiving appropriate instructions, each team member quickly evacuated the building and went to the assigned rally point. We are proud to say that every team member took the drills seriously and understood their responsibility in the event of an actual ammonia emergency. On the first Saturday of 2013, eight New Castle team members became certified first responders. These extraordinary team members learned to operate an AED (Automatic Electronic Defibrillator), and perform CPR. They also learned how to handle and work with blood borne pathogens. These dedicated team members are ready to act as first responders and are prepared to help fellow team members and visitors to our facility. Please join us in congratulating these newly certified first responders:

Burris New Castle Shows Community Spirit

Throughout the second half of 2012 and the 2012 Holiday Season, Burris New Castle team members have generously supported less fortunate members of our community. Our spirit of giving started out by providing breakfast for the Ronald McDonald House in Wilmington, Delaware in Fall 2012. The Ronald McDonald House provides lodging for family members of children facing serious illness and surgery at A.I. Dupont Hospital. We will continue our support of the local Ronald McDonald House by cooking dinner there in the Spring of 2013. Rather than keeping their company-provided Thanksgiving turkeys, several team members donated them to local families. In addition to donating turkeys, we provided many of the fixings to make an entire meal for those in need. In November 2012, Burris New Castle donated $500.00 to the American Red Cross. That donation was earmarked for victims of Hurricane Sandy. In December 2012, we also donated $251.50 to Catholic Charities, who in turn provided much appreciated support to children in New Castle County. As Burris New Castle and our team members thrive, we recognize that support of our community will enhance the lives of others. We are proud to be in a position to help our community thrive and prosper. On March 2, 2013, sixteen team and family members from Burris New Castle volunteered for the second meal we provided for the Ronald McDonald House in Wilmington, DE. At 1:30 PM, we eagerly loaded our vehicles with all the fixins for a gourmet meal and drove to the Ronald McDonald House to start cooking!!! We gladly prepared, cooked, and served for the next four hours to appreciative guests of the Ronald McDonald House. Under the direction of head chef Jim Bertuola, we prepared three entrees, roast pork loin, roast chicken, and tortellini. We also prepared roasted red potatoes and green beans. We even brought along two sheet cakes for dessert... At the end of the day, all of the Burris New Castle volunteers felt a sense of accomplishment and pride in knowing we helped well-deserving guests of the Ronald McDonald House. The following New Castle team and family members volunteered their time and energy to this heart warming project: Shavon Wilks-Taylor and family members, Jim Bertuola, his sister-in-law and niece, Ron Hervi, Kim Trala-Bowers and her son, Mark, Kevin Powers and his wife, Joyce, Brian Kiliany, George Thomas, Tom Donovan and Rose Johnson, Jennifer Maloney and Kathy Durand. Memorial Golf Outing

On September 29, 2012 we held our annual golf outing at Hawks Landing Country Club in Southington Ct. This was our fourth event and it was a great success in many ways. With a modest start in year one of 24 golfers this year we grew to 80 golfers. The weather did not look good, but on that Saturday we got a break in the clouds with no rain, and the sun came out a little later in the day which helped make the day a great success. This years honoree of the Memorial Golf Outing is Felipe Estrada. Felipe is one of our most courageous selectors in our Elkton facility who at this time is in remission from leukemia. He recently finished his last treatment of chemotherapy and is very touched by honoring him as this years honoree. Felipe is also a big supporter of St. Judes as he has his friends donate to the cause of the kids vs. himself. We will soon be looking to plan next years event and would like to let everybody know that this is an open invitation to all that would like to attend and play. We know facilities are very far apart but if you are in the area we would love to have you play. We would like to thank all the sponsors and people that helped us with donations and our volunteers that helped out at registration. Many thanks to Charlie and Lori Agganis, Tabitha and Jeff Mirisola, Mike Wingate, Chris Costa, and Karen Montana; you all made the event the success that it was. Hope to have a bigger result next year. Written by Pete Montana | Produce Category Mgr./ Acct. Mgr.

Rocky Hill Bounces Back After Nemo

Burris Rocky Hill is digging out of 3 feet of snow left behind by Snowstorm Nemo this weekend. Despite the bad weather, 7 team members joined together Saturday night to receive 33 trucks. It was quite the challenge and they did an incredible job considering what they were up against. The Nemo 7 are Jean Eddy Mores, Steve Ceplenski, Miguel Madera, Arenzo Washington, Gerardo Torres, Khaliq Sharif and Sebastiano Garofalo. Also, on hand was Dexter Lee, the night supervisor who was there to work alongside the Nemo 7 and Mike Wingate who coordinated all of the efforts - critical to their success. All showed enthusiasm under a stressful time and put in more than a full nights worth of work. And another Nemo all-star from Rocky Hill is Ludek ebk. Ludek spent all of Saturday at the facility working with the snow removal team and assessing the building. His efforts are greatly appreciated as well!

It was a true team effort with HR making dozens of calls to team members to see how they were doing in the wake of the storm and keeping them updated on our plans. Special thanks to Nadia BedasseFrancis and Jessica Stevens for their help as well. Burris deeply appreciates your dedication and commitment! And it doesnt stop there! Welcome new team member Lisa Arcaini, Transportation Recruiter!

Our drivers are a vital part of our success. They are the people who represent the company daily on the road and at the customer truly the face of I am Burris. Having the right driver represent Burris to our customer is critical to retaining our customer relationships and protecting the general public sharing the road with them. To help with recruiting great driver candidates, we are pleased to announce the addition of Lisa Arcaini to the Burris Logistics team as Transportation Recruiter. Lisa joined the Burris team in Jan 2013 and has spent her first few months learning about the Burris culture, visiting transportation departments in several facilities, conducting hiring events and even riding along with our drivers to see what they do on a daily basis. Lisa joins us with over 20 years of Transportation field experience, most recently spending 7 years as the CDL Driver Talent Market Recruiter for Ryder Systems, Inc. She served in various roles with Ryder Systems including reservations, service writer, customer service coordinator, Human Resource coordinator, parts logistics leader and customer logistics coordinator. Lisa and her husband Vincent, her high school crush, are residents of Mount Laurel, NJ. While they never dated in high school, they met again a few years later and married. Their two daughters, Tricia and Emily, have moved out on their own but stayed in NJ. Lisa and Vince are very active in their church and volunteer time in the community. While her parents and grandparents taught her both work and life ethics, the owner of the pizza place where she had her very first job as a waitress also made a lasting impression. She learned very quickly from the very intimidating owner that the customer is always right. He would bellow Without the customer there is nothing! Lisa still sees him when she goes to that same restaurant and he still bellows that same phrase. While working with Ryder, Lisa became familiar with Burris as a customer and was intrigued by how we do business and who we are. With some persuading, we were able to convince her to join the team because the customer is always right and without the customer there is nothing.

The first leg of the Cruise Your Way to Safety regatta is preparing to embark from Lyndhurst for ports yet known, as John Johnson punched his ticket to paradise. On February 6th, Johns name was drawn by Frank Ahern during a luncheon to recognize Lyndhurst team members for going ninety days without a recordable injury. As the Countdown to Cruise clock fell under ten days remaining, anticipation built among team members who would be eligible for the prize drawing. As it fell under three days remaining, teammates kidded each other about where they might go should they win the cruise. And while there may have been a momentary letdown from his teammates when Johns name was announced, the claps, cheers, and smiles of those in attendance showed genuine happiness for one of their own. It may be John that boards the ship this time, but it was a total team effort that got him there! Congratulations to all Lyndhurst team members. Thank you all for working safely and completing your first goal in our Cruise to Safety program, said Frank Ahern, Corporate Director of Safety, Health, and Environment. John Johnson was chosen out of the fishbowl for Lyndhursts first award. John will receive a cruise valued up to $1,500 dollars,

While we all wish John safe travel on his journey, we need to take a moment to reflect on the fact that during that 90-day accident-free stretch all Lyndhurst team members went home safe and without injury. In the end, this is quite an accomplishment that we all can live with. And when Frank was going out the door heading towards another Burris facility, the last thing he heard was, well see you again in 83 days!

gets people thinking about being extra safe, and that is really great! Thanks to the safe efforts of my co-workers, my girlfriend and I are going to the Bahamas. In April, it will be time for someone elses name to be drawn. Mike Piscitelli, Lyndhursts General Manager, reflected on the accomplishment. Congratulations to John and the entire Lyndhurst Team. I am proud of all the Lyndhurst Team Members who safely worked together to reach 90 days with no recordable accidents and earn the chance to be rewarded for their success with a cruise and all the extras. Everyone should not only be very proud of reaching this goal, but by also surpassing three years without a lost time accident. I look forward to the next drawing and giving away a few more

Evelyn Marks

FROM BURRIS ELKTON BURRIS SUCCESS STORY

I first met Evelyn at HPWP at the end of February. Even though we were in different groups, we ended up sitting across the table from one another at the final dinner. From our very short conversation, I could tell that she was an extremely motivated supervisor who goes out of her way to help others. During that dinner, I happened to mention to Evelyn that I have always wanted to learn how to operate a pallet jack. She immediately encouraged me to come up to Elkton and get certified! (Which I did) She helped take my talk and put it into action. After visiting with Evelyn and her team one night this month, I am quite certain that is one of her greatest talents - turning talk into action. While I was on site, I was able to witness Evelyn in her element. As a PM receiving manager of a mostly all guy team, Evelyn does not skip a beat. She has that unique ability to connect with team members on all levels. She is a mentor, friend and respected leader of her team. Her manager, Bill Morrow, mentioned that Evelyn would make a great candidate for our Burris Success Story, and after hearing about her Burris journey, I whole-heartily agreed. Bill was kind enough to write up a short piece about Evelyns success at Burris Elkton: I would like to share the success story of Evelyns efforts and performance with all of Burris. I actually cannot say enough good things about her as a person and as a leader. She has stepped up in what is essentially a very harsh and male-dominated environment and held her own gaining respect as a detailed manager of processes and as a caring leader of people. She is truly the
20 | Make i t h ap pe n

strength of the night receiving operation and one of the top leaders in the Elkton Distribution Center. She has an amazing level of energy and drive (better than having the energizer bunny working with us) to get things done and do right by the company and by each associate she leads and each individual she comes in contact with. She is best known for consistently going above and beyond all expectations and to her utter commitment to taking those around her and the operation to the next level of success. She joined the Burris team in June of 2010 as a Receiving Clerk where she quickly mastered every aspect of the receiving office, establishing herself as the go-to-person for all related issues. During this time she not only performed her duties and responsibilities to the utmost, she also created a comprehensive set of SOPs around everything she learned which served as a foundation to many of the successes surrounding the efficient operation of the receiving office. In Feb 2012 she was promoted to the Receiving Office Lead where she continued to build on her dedicated efforts of stabilizing the office operation around her ability to fully grasp, document and pass on the day-to-day needs and requirements of the operation. In May of 2012 she was promoted to a Receiving Supervisor where she fully engaged her embedded talent to take charge of and lead people and operations. Here she, once again, quickly mastered every aspect of her responsibilities including taking care of

the associates, establishing herself as the go-to-leader for not only operational needs but just as important the needs of the associates. It did not take long at all for not only her associates to embrace her as a leader that they knew they could trust to do the right thing by them and the company but also by others throughout the operation that tracked her down for her guidance and assistance. Outside of the workplace she is a graduate of Delaware County Community College where she majored in Architecture, is a volunteer member for the Spayed Club of Sharron Hill, PA and is an avid reader. Evelyn is truly a leader who exemplifies the characteristics and core values that the Burris culture is built on. She is indisputably a very dedicated, respectful, dependable and trustworthy leader that continues to play a pivotal role in the success of the department, the company and her fellow team members. She is truly a very valued asset to her team members and to the company. Thanks, Bill Morrow One aspect that I really admire about Evelyn is her ability and desire to chip in to help out around the warehouse throughout the night. Even though it is not a requirement for her position, she is trained and certified on most of the equipment. She said to me, Hey, if I have to manage others that operate pallet jacks, forklifts etc., I need to know how to do it myself. She often pitches in to help the lumpers wrap pallets and encourages her team to speak up if they want to be cross-trained in any position. Evelyn is certainly a leader who not only talks the talk but also walks the walk. Thank you for your dedication to your team and to Burris, Evelyn! By: Sarah Lauzen

BURRIS ANNOUNCEMENTS

May 2013 | each team member in Burris will have access to our new My Burris Career Center website that is hosted by Cornerstone on Demand.
What is My Burris Career Center? As we have met with supervisors and managers throughout Burris, several of the team members described it as LinkedIn for Burris. In Cornerstone, we are going to have each of you set up your personal profile - what is your experience, education, personal interests, career goals, awards, etc. This will give you a profile that we will use to search for internal candidates when we have job openings. With close to 1800 team members, we have never had the resource before and have had to rely on team members seeing a job posting. Why is My Burris Career Center important? The career center will link all of your information on your profile, your performance reviews, your training (both internal Burris training and external training), your rewards and recognition together under one profile. This will help us see who is ready for the next career challenge and it will help you search open job postings and make plans for your career path at Burris. Why did we select My Burris Career Center? Burris Logistics is committed to developing our team and being more proactive to promoting from within. We have a lot of great team members who may not know there are opportunities and will now be able to see everything that is available. What can we expect from My Burris Career Center in 2013? We are starting the implementation process by having each team member build their profile, complete their performance appraisals on line, and begin to take some of the training that is available on line. We are asking each team member to supply an email address so that we can notify everyone directly of job openings, training opportunities, and important announcements. You will see more features turned on throughout the next two years as we use the system. As with any system, My Burris Career Center will only work if we all use it to its fullest potential. Get ready to gather all of your profile information so that we can get profiles in as soon as possible. We want to grow our own leaders at Burris, and this will help us know you and your special skills and talents. If you have any questions, please contact Director of Team Member Relations Laura McCann, EdD, SPHR, @ 1-302-839-5202, for more information.

Did you know we have a Doctor on the TEAM?

On January 27, 2013, Laura McCann, Director of Team Member Relations graduated with a Doctor of Education Degree in Innovation and Leadership from Wilmington University. Laura began her degree in September 2008 which involved extensive reading and class work in organizational leadership practices. She defended her doctoral defense on October 19, 2012 Implementing a High Performance Work Place in the Distribution and Logistics Industry, a program evaluation of the Burris HPWP initiative. Laura has a lifelong education vision to continue to learn new things to improve her service to the team members at Burris. It is never too late to learn and grow. This has been an amazing personal journey for me and the opportunity to work for Burris Logistics has been wonderful. I could not have achieved this without the support of Donnie Burris, Bob Sliwa, and all of the other Burris team members throughout the company. I look forward to paying it forward as we develop educational and training opportunities for our team members in the next few years.

Burris Success Story - Lauren Weyant - Burris Elkton

1. What was your first position with Burris? I began working for Burris as a Human Resources Specialist in July of 2007 . 2. Why did you join the Burris team? One of the first things I noticed when I came in for my interview was how friendly everyone throughout the building was Burris really has the family feel. That made a strong impression on me, and its something that I always share with people when they ask about Burris. 3. How did you learn about and become interested in following a career path in Human Resources? Originally, I was going to school to be an English Teacher. During my Junior year, my boss at a local restaurant thought my teaching background would be helpful with training and on-boarding new hires, so I started handling the orientations and training sessions. At the same time, I was working as a part-time receptionist at a Nursing and Rehab Center, and the Director of Human Resources approached me about possibly working with her, assisting with payroll, etc. The longer I was able to work with her, the more exposure I had to the HR world, and decided it was something I was really interested in. 4. What did you learn that helped you to grow? Was there anyone who was a mentor to you? I owe the career change to my boss Lori
22 | Make i t h ap pe n

at the Nursing and Rehab Center. She spent a lot of time teaching me and guiding me in my decision to change my major and focus my studies on HR. Since I have been at Burris, I have had the wonderful privilege of working with Peggy Maher-Daniels. She has allowed me to grow as a professional in the HR field, and take the necessary steps to advance myself. She promotes her team to work independently, yet collectively, which has allowed me to gain the necessary skills required to be confident in the decisions I make. You learn the basics in school, but nothing compares to the real life exposure that you receive on a day-to-day basis in the workplace. I have had the opportunity to learn so many different things while working at Burris. 5. What advice do you have for fellow Burris team members on career opportunities at Burris? Burris is an excellent company to work for. If you have the desire and drive to advance, someone will see the potential

there. Burris goes above and beyond to provide their team members with training opportunities and resources for advancement. 6. What do you like about the positions you have held at Burris? The best part about working in Human Resources are the relationships you begin to develop with fellow team members. Here in Elkton, we truly are a family. It never ceases to amaze me the way our team pulls together to assist each other in times of need. I feel blessed to have the opportunity to work for Burris. I get to work with a great team - Peg, Jenelle and Shaniqua make work a fun experience and I look forward to coming in everyday. Burris does a great job of making you feel like family no matter where you are in the company - Ive experienced that same warm feeling at all of the facilities Ive visited.

portunity to learn anything I could that would better me at my job and make me more valuable to the company. I am currently going to be on my second year at the WFLO program, I have attended Burris University and HPWP all in the past year along with supervisory training classes all provided by Burris. I have had a lot of supervisors, managers and even fellow team members that have all helped mentor me over the years. They had all seen the hard work I put in everyday and were willing to help guide me down the right path to the success I have achieved so far. 5. What advice do you have for fellow Burris team members on career opportunities at Burris? The best advice I think for other team members interested in furthering a career at Burris is just to be open to learning new things, be willing to take every opportunity that comes about with an open mind that something positive can come out of it. 6. What do you like about the positions you have held at Burris? I have worked pretty much every position in the warehouse over the years. Starting as lumper, to receiver/auditor, to loader, to reach truck operator to team lead to now supervisor. I have even participated in the inventory department regularly over the years. Each position provided me opportunity to obtain new knowledge that would later help with other positions. The only other thing I would like to add is that I have gotten this far in 7 years with no prior job experience in the industry. Burris is constantly doing things to push me and continue to help me grow. The plan is not to stop now.............

1. What was your first position with Burris? When I started with Burris, I was lumper, unloading floor loaded containers. 2. Why did you join the Burris team? I really was not sure what I was looking to do as far as work and needed a job having just moved back home to Florida. I heard about the job through my sister who worked for the company at the time. Figured, why not try something new? 3. How did you learn about and become interested in following a career path in Warehouse Operations? I have members of my family that have worked in the Warehousing industry in the past so I was familiar with what Warehousing Operations is, I just lacked personal experience. To be honest, at the time I had not planned on going into the industry until I started at Burris and realized I enjoyed doing it. That was when I decided to move forward and see what I could do, not only within the industry, but more so within the company itself. 4. What did you learn that helped you to grow? Was there anyone who was a mentor to you? I had really little to no knowledge at all when I started so everything was pretty much new to me. I just took every op-
