TECHNICAL MANUAL
BK-2 LATCH
ASSY. # 0901-XXX

DESCRIPTION
The BK-2 Latch is a 1" O.D. wireline retrievable latch designed with a spring-loaded latch ring. The BK-2 Latch is designed to be top-mounted on 1" O.D. gas lift valves, chemical injection valves and other 1" O.D. sidepocket devices which are not provided with integral latches. The BK-2 Latch consists of a latch post, latch body, latch spring, latch ring, and latch stop. The latch components are available in either Stainless steel or Monel for corrosion resistance in wells with high concentrations of H 2S or CO2. The simple design of the BK-2 Latch permits easy redress of the tool after service and rapid, low cost replacement of latch parts. The BK-2 Latch is installed and removed from the mandrel sidepocket using standard wireline methods. A minimum amount of force is required to install the latch. This feature is particularly important in deviated wells where forceful downward jarring is not possible.

LATCH APPLICATION AND OPERATION

The BK-2 Latch is used to secure the 1" O.D. gas lift valves, chemical injection valves and other sidepocket devices in sidepocket mandrels. Prior to installation, the BK-2 Latch is assembled onto the upper end of the selected device, then secured to the JK Running Tool. The running tool, latch and sidepocket device are attached to the appropriate kickover tool and are run by wireline to the depth of the selected mandrel. Downward jarring is required to drive the sidepocket device into the mandrel sidepocket and to set the latch. When the latch and the device are jarred downward, a semicircular latching lug at the top of the pocket shifts the latch ring upward and laterally against the smaller O.D. section of the latch body. In this deflected position, the latch ring is able to pass around the latching lug at the top of the sidepocket. When the latch ring has cleared the lug, the downward force of the latch spring returns the latch ring into its normal position around the base of the latch body. In this position, the latch ring engages the locking recess in the sidepocket of the mandrel and secures the latch and the attached device in the sidepocket. Upward jarring shears the two brass shear pins which secure the JK Running Tool to the BK-2 Latch and enables the running tool to be removed from the mandrel.

The 1-1/4" JDC Pulling Tool is used to remove the BK-2 Latch and the attached sidepocket device from the mandrel. Downward jarring secures the collet of the pulling tool to the fishing neck of the latch body. Upward jarring is then applied. The upward jarring shears the 1/8" brass shear pin which holds the latch body down in the locked position. When the latch body moves upward, the latch ring moves laterally against the O.D. base of the latch stop. In this deflected position, the latch ring is able to pass around the semicircular latching lug at the top of the sidepocket. The latch and attached device are then removed from the sidepocket and from the well.

DISASSEMBLY PROCEDURE
1. Remove the latch stop (6) from the latch post (1). 2. Remove the latch ring (5) and the latch spring (4) from the latch body (2). 3. If the valve has been in service, the brass shear pin (3) will have been sheared and the latch body (2) can be removed from the latch post (1). Knock the remaining piece of the brass shear pin out of the shear pinhole in the latch post using a pin punch and hammer. If the valve has not been in service, drive the brass shear pin out of the shear pinhole, which is located near the midpoint of the latch body. Remove the latch body from the latch post.

ASSEMBLY PROCEDURE
1. Inspect all latch parts for damage. Replace the latch spring (4) if it is badly worn or broken. Replace the latch ring (5) if it is badly gouged or damaged. 2. Slide the upper end of the latch body (2) onto the latch post (1) as shown on the above assembly drawing. 3. Align the shear pinholes in the latch body and the latch post. Insert the 1/8" brass shear pin (3) fully into the shear pinhole. File the ends of the pin flush with the surface of the latch body. 4. Slide the latch spring (4) over the lower end of the latch body until the latch spring stops at the shoulder near the midpoint of the latch body. 5. Slide the latch ring (5) onto the lower end of the latch body. The end of the latch ring with the larger O.D. must be positioned toward the spring for proper operation. 6. Apply an even layer of Loctite Thread Locker (Loctite # 242 or #243) to the threads of the latch post (1). Make up the latch stop (6) to the latch post and tighten fully. Be sure that enough Loctite is applied t o assure that there are no voids or cavities between the threads.
