5 Themes for Change in Wine, 2013

SF Chronicle, 01/11/2013 By: Jon Bonne

2011 Futurosa:
Futurosa is a great Rose inviting to be optimistic and to enjoy an easy drink glass of wine as an aperitif or during the happy hour with friends. Rose in color. Fine and intense, very fruity with notes of wild strawberries and red berries. Medium bodies wine, fresh, elegant, and persistent. Drink this wine with starters and appetizers, pastas, grilled fish dishes and shellfish, light meat courses, or enjoy it with fresh middle aged cheeses. Suggested serving temperature: 50/54* F

The importance of old vines: California's boom since the late 1980s has largely been built around new plantings and fashionable clones. With another replanting wave set to wash over the state, young vines are driving much of the industry. That's all the more reason for mature plantings to get their due. These aren't just historically important; they can offer a more complex expression of wine than the exuberant fruit of young plants - a truism that was accepted for centuries until the young-vine obsession of recent years. It is perhaps inconvenient that old vines give a particular depth of flavor, although it helps that fruit from many of California's old vineyards remain a relative bargain, certainly compared with the modern costs of replanting, often $50,000 per acre. Perhaps this will be the year when the industry acknowledges that sustainability, in its true sense, means planning for the full life span of a perennial plant that can survive 50 years or more. That long view is long overdue.

2010 Rollone:
Rollone is a unique blend of Barbera and Pinot Noir. The first vintage was in 2003 when we decided to blend the wines from our youngest Barbera and Pinot Noir vineyards. Since then, it has been a successful union; the elegance of Pinot Noir and the strength of Barbera. The two wines are vinified separately, then blended and aged together for 6 months in small oak barrels. A great wine to drink for the duration of the meal. Well suited for starters, chicken, Rich ruby red in color. When young, this wine is fresh with red berries and summer fruits. Watermelon and cranberry. Tropical flowers like gardenia and jasmine. Fields of freshly cut green grass.. Medium -bodied, balanced and dry with a crisp fresh finish. Red currant, dark chocolate and black pepper. Generous on the palate. Persistent. Delicious.

Wine Facts
The US is the fourth wine producer in the world, after the countries of France, Italy and Spain. California produces approximately 90% of all wine made in the USA. One barrel of wine equals approximately 24 (12 -bottle) cases and 1,100 glasses. One ton of grapes makes about 780 bottles of wine, or 65 cases. One vine produces between four and six bottles of wine. Approximately 2.8 pounds of grapes are used to make one bottle of wine. By 2010, if not sooner, the United States is expected to become the No. 1 wine market in the world. In 2009, there were 2,843 bonded wineries and 4,600 wine grape growers in California. The California wine industry has an economic impact of more than $61.5 billion on the states economy and $121.8 billion on the U.S. Economy. More than 20 million people visit California wine country each year. 5

2009 Leopoldo Pinot Noir:

Pinot Noir a vine that is an uncommon choice for Piemonte's viticulture. For us, however, Pinot Nero is very familiar and has been in our terroir for over 150 years, since the time of our ancestor, Leopoldo Incisa della Rocchetta. This wine's excellent structure allows it to express itself for 15 -20 years. This wine is ideal for refined dishes. Excellent with pork, chicken, shellfish, fish and dishes with simple sauces. Ruby red with age it tends toward a garnet hue. A nose of great complexity, typical of the varietal of origin. Intense, ith notes of ripe cherry, tobacco and spices. A dry, round and harmonious taste with a medium body. Well-balanced. Savor the subtleties of pomegranate, chocolate & wild berries. Well integrated, followed by a long and elegant finish.

"What you will taste is the essence of the vineyard."

-Greg Martin
MARTIN ESTATE encompasses roughly twelve acres. Eight of these acres were planted in 1996 with 17,000 vines. Seven acres of tightly spaced Cabernet Sauvignon, Clones 4, 6 and 337 surround the winery and, at the south end of the property, one acre of Merlot. Split redwood stakes and non-galvanized wire were used as the trellising system to avoid the reflection of new metal, retaining the feel of a 19th century vineyard. The soils of the property are Pleasanton Loam and Yolo Loam. Both of these are well drained soils on alluvial fans, allowing the roots of the vines to go deep into the ground in search of water, thus requiring little irrigation. The rootstocks chosen are especially well suited for the terrain. The Estate's vineyard is farmed using organic methods. As the Estate's terroir changes within the vineyard from 100 percent loam in the eastern section to a more gravelly soil towards the west, an individualized drip irrigation system allows select watering according to the vines' needs. Being located in the heart of the Rutherford appellation, the sun exposure of the vineyard has a higher radiant value than other parts of Napa Valley. This - combined with cool evenings and the dusting of fog in the early mornings -allows the fruit to ripen at a steady pace. Come harvest time, the grapes are carefully hand picked in small lots and segregated according to clones and soils, as well as their specific maturity. As the vines are only a few feet away from the Estate Winery, it is possible to get the grapes within minutes after picking onto a sorting table, where de -stemmed whole berries are hand sorted to remove all inferior material. MARTIN ESTATE Cabernet Sauvignon is limited to what the vineyard yields, and the wine's intensity mirrors its terroir.

2010 Petite Sirah:

The Via de Las Peas Vineyard produces an inky Petite Sirah with great structure. The Osteria I Nonni Restaurant in Minnesota continues to label a barrel of this wine as Il Gorduccio. Winemakers notes- The 2010 Estate Petite Syrah is more refined than our 2009, with a lower alcohol and a more integrated palate. Inky deep violet in color, there are complex dark fruit aromas. There is a balanced restraint to the acidity, tannins, and oak from this full bodied wine on the palate. The blackberry flavors take center stage to soft toast and spicy flavors of the American Oak.

2009 Petronius Tuscolo Rosso:

With aromas, evocative of dark cherry & black pepper the wine has great charm and a bit of rusticity that evoke images of the Tuscan country side. A wonderful wine to pair with roasted meats, fowl, and deeply flavored cheeses such as Pecorino. Also fantastic with pizza and pasta dishes.

The palate is balanced with a bright acidity, soft tannins and complex blackfruit flavors. The wine finishes with lingering blackberry and blueberry aromas. Podere Sapaio was founded in 1999, after Massimo Piccin convinced his father to invest in purchase of land and creation of wine -making estate in prospective Bolgheri DOC area. Being originally from North -Italian region of Veneto Massimo always felt passion for wine and wanted to embody it in his own project. The estate comprising of up -to-date winery and 40 hectares of land has been created practically from zero. The Sapaio vineyards are divided between the municipalities of Castagneto Carducci and Bibbona. The lands are located on quaternary deposits and range from loose coarse grained sandy sediments to flood-land deposits with free-draining calcareous soil. Grapevines from Bordeaux that have been cultivated here over the past fifty years have established themselves in the area very well. Greek settlers in Sicily and Southern parts of Italy found the moderate Italian climate conducive to grape cultivation and winemaking. They termed the place Enotria i.e. a land of wines and introduced winemaking techniques around 800 B.C. Etruscans from Asia Minor who settled mostly in central Italy also produced wine. Spaniards introduced wine into Sardinia. Italian wine production flourished around second century B.C. after the Carthaginians were defeated by the Romans. Romans improved the techniques previously introduced and perfected the art of winemaking. They contributed to the spread of organized cultivation of vineyards, mass manufacture of wine, and storage of wine in barrels and bottles. Between 300 B.C. to the beginning of the Christian era the population of Rome crossed one million and there was a sudden spurt in the demand for wine. Famous Roman poets like Horace and Virgil mention the names of wines like Falernum, Caecubum, and Mamertinum. Romans considered the Falernian region near Naples as their best wine-growing region. White wine produced in this region was treasured and most renowned. Honey was mixed with white wine to produce an aperitif called Mulsum. Romans produced both red and white wines and the alcoholic content was high. This made the wine unpalatable due to a strong acidic taste and therefore they mixed large amount of water. Romans preferred sweet wine and drank it with almost every meal. They mixed additives like herbs, spices, chalk, and salt water with the wine. Romans made immense contribution to viniculture by classifying grapes and describing the climate that best suits cultivation of each variety. They introduced props and trellises that increased yield. They improvised the presses used to extract juice from grapes that were introduced by the Greeks. Romans were the first to store wines in tightly closed wooden barrels. They recognized the importance of aging wines to improve flavor and taste. They preferred wines that matured for ten to twenty five years. Romans are believed to have introduced the use of glass jars and corks. Their expertise was passed on to other parts of Europe and remained unchanged for centuries. Demand for wine decreased with the decline and fall of the Roman Empire. Christian monks of the Roman Catholic Church documented their grape cultivation and wine making techniques during the Dark Ages. Wine regained its popularity from the fourteenth century. During the nineteenth and early part of twentieth century Italian wine was criticized for its inferior quality and the government stepped in to introduce regulation and stringent quality control measures. These measures bore fruit and Italy today accounts for twenty percent of the worlds total wine production.

It has all the characteristics that we are learning to be the hallmarks of the Maus Vineyard, an incredibly smooth and well balanced wine packed with ripe fruit and spice. The wine begins with fresh aromas of cherry and blackberry. Flavors of lush dark fruit followed by anise and toasty oak round out the palette giving way to a long spicy dry finish. AS with the 2007 vintage that has already sold out , it is a great wine from the beginning to end.

Jessie's Grove Winery

Jessie's Grove Winery is nestled between the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta and the foothills of the Sierra Nevada in Lodi, the perfect environment for growing premium wine grapes and producing premium wines. Joseph Spenker arrived in Stockton in 1868 with 27 in his pocket. Ten years later he owned over 1500 acres of some of the best ground in the Central Valley including the Ranch now called Jessies Grove. In 1870 he went to a wedding in Stockton where met a beautiful girl, Anna Schlieman, and married her the next day. They had two children, Jessie and Otto, who grew up in the home Joseph built for his family in 1906. Joseph planted his first vineyard in 1888 adding more acres in subsequent years. Many of these vines remain in production today and produce some of our most prized wine. In the late 40s and 50s Jessie rejected all ideas of changing the Oak Grove. The grand Christian Lady who experienced two world wars, witnessed women gain the right to vote, held out a helping hand and managed three large ranches, died in 1952. Jessie was seventy seven years old. Jessie patterned her life in her fathers noble footsteps. Jessie was a true pioneer lady of the San Joaquin Valley.

Wine is one of man's greatest creations, and without a doubt, an amazing achievement. Wine is a drink that has been through much of our history. The ancient Egyptians made and consumed wine, Jesus was a wine drinker, and Christopher Columbus and his crew drank wine on their boats as they found the Americas. History traces Spain as one the oldest wine producing countries, with the first grape vines being planted around 1100 B.C. in the region of Andaluca. However there have been some studies that believe that grape seeds were planted in Spain between 4000 and 3000 B.C. Either way, we know that Spain has at least been making wine for the past 3000 years, and has a rich history on the development of wine and what is has become today. When Spain was conquered by the Phoenicians around 1100 B.C., they planted what is considered the first grape vines in Cadiz and started the production of wine. When the Romans conquered Spain around 210 B.C. wine production expanded throughout the country and it became a main source of work and income for the people. The quality of the wine varied from region to region, but it can said that the province of Tarragona and the Region of Andaluca produced and exported most of the best wine throughout the Roman empire. When the Roman Empire fell, the Moors conquered most of Spain (A.D. 711) and forbid the use of alcohol, which was their religious belief. Though wine was still produced during the Moorish rule, most grapes where used for "food and wine was no longer a major trade in Spain. However, the Moors did keep some vineyards for wine and started the production of fortified wine, which was the birth of "Sherry", Spain's sweet fortified wine. To this date, Sherry is still being produced in the region of Andaluca and is one of Spain's most popular exported items. Spaniards fought battle after battle to re-gain control of Spain, and finally ejected the moors in 1492 to take back control of their country. At that time, wine production came back to life. Many new vineyards were planted and the country was ready to open its market to the rest of Europe. After Christopher Columbus found the Americas, it opened the door for the Spaniards to export much of its wine to Latin America and once again, wine became a big part of Spain's economy. Through much of Spain's wine history (and the rest of the worlds), Spanish wine was light in color, had herbal fragrances, and made to be consumed right after it was made. Let's fast forward to around 1850. The country of France, known as the kings of wine at the time, had a bug called the "phylloxera", it destroyed most of the vineyards in France. At that time, many French winemakers moved to neighboring Spain as the bug had not attacked Spain. When the French arrived, they brought many new wine making styles and techniques that the Spaniards did not know, around that time is when Spanish wine really started to get more color, better fragrance, more fruit, and giving it a longer shelve life. In the past, wineries in Spain usually picked grapes well before they were mature or even ripened, and would sometimes mix red and white grapes together. The wine would usually stay in wine barrels for a long period of time (10+ years) so the wine would become smoother and not rancid. At some point during the 1960's new wine techniques started evolving in La Rioja. Most wine makers started to leave the grapes on the vine for a longer period before harvesting them, and left the wines on the barrels for a shorter amount of time. This method offered fruiter wines with a smoother finish and a fuller body, which has evolved to what Spanish wine is today. Around 1900 is when Spain's Cava (Spain's version of Champagne) started in the region of Catalonia. Cava rivaled Champagne from the start, as the quality was in par with Champagne, but the price was much lower. To this date, Cava is one of the most popular sparkling wines in the world, providing that "Champagne" taste, for a fraction of the price. Not to say that Cava is better than Champagne, with respect to the French, Champagne will always be King, but the price for a bottle can be out of most peoples reach. Thanks to the sparkling wines from Cava, the rest of us can open a bottle and celebrate the good times. 104

Dancing Lady Winery, Alexander Valley

2010 Racines de la Terre Sauvignon Blanc:

Light yellow color, with a typical nose of tropical fruit and grapefruit. Very pleasant on the palate with citrus and white fruit flavor. Serve cold with smoked salmon, salmon eggs, warm goat cheese, salads and raw sea foods. cheese salads and raw seafood. This early-fruiting grape variety is ready for harvesting in early summer; Mechanical harvesting in the cool hours of the morning (4am to 8 am) to ensure the must is not oxidized, which would ruin the fleeting, delicate flavors of the grape. Macerated partly on the skins and partly by direct pneumatic pressing; must rack at 8C followed by three-week low-temperature Fermentation; Stirred and left to rest on the second lees for three months. Cellar work in stainless steel or lined concrete tanks.

Shortly after the Civil War, our great-grandfather, Francesco Passalacqua, arrived in California from San Lorenzo della Costa, Italy. Like many Italian immigrants during this time, Francesco settled in Sonoma County hoping to achieve the American Dream. He financially supported himself by selling produce from a vegetable wagon. By 1896 Francesco had earned enough money to purchase a ranch in Alexander Valley for the cost of ten gold coins. Francesco and his son Emil, our grandfather, planted Zinfandel grapes on this ranch. Emil used the grapes from those vines to make wine at the then family owned Fitch Mountain Winery and Oliveto Winery. Emil owned and managed this ranch. He married Camille Young, and they raised their children on this land. Today, Emils son and our father, Fred, oversees the day -to -day operations of the vineyard. Under Freds ownership and management, the vineyard now includes varietals such as Merlot, Syrah; trellis Zinfandel as well as the original old vine Zinfandel. In 2005, we began Dancing Lady Wines. The wine that we produce today is made from the original Zinfandel vines planted by Francesco and Emil. With Freds expertise as a viticulturalist, the original old vines continue to yield the highest quality grapes in the area. Emils granddaughter and Freds eldest daughter, Gia, follows in her grandfathers footsteps as the winemaker for Dancing Lady Wines. We are proud to continue this family tradition. Dancing Lady Wines is the result of our love for family, heritage, and land as we continue a family legacy started so many years ago.

Ardente Estate Winery:

Sub-appellation : Atlas Peak

Ardente Cabernet Sauvignon:

This is the word that Carlo Di Ruocco felt best described his relationship to the land and the wine that is his "Ardente" (Feeling great passion) Ardente Estate Winery was founded in 1996 on a twenty acre estate located in the quiet hills of Atlas Peak in Napa Valley. The area was selected for its rich volcanic soil, 1500 feet elevation and moderate microclimate which provide perfect condition for growing high quality Cabernet Sauvignon. Our wines are hand-crafted and aged to be enjoyed upon release.

2008 Chateau Goudichaud Rouge:

This wine has an intense dark-inky color with garnet reflections. Round tannins, soft yet powerful, evolve within, with great persistence. It also presents a generous feel on the palate, fruity and balanced. Aromas of black licorice, blackberry and cocoa, are noticed as well as discreet notes of oak and spice on the finish. Lots of freshness! To be consumed with poultry and red meats, but also with cheese, (mimolette as an example) The soils of Chteau Goudichaud display great diversity from one side of the estate to the other. The vineyard can be divided into three parts: a central plateau which is composed of clay and limestone, the gravel is about three feet deep; then on each side of this plateau, gravely slopes enjoy optimal exposure. These gravelly soils, common to the Graves de Vayres, are clayey, deep and generous. Graves de Vayres AOC is considered to give more consistent quality of both red and white wines.

With a population of 65 million, wine is the dominant preferred drink and has a much greater wine consumption rate than US, per capita. The French traditions of winemaking originated in the 6th BC century and evolved over hundreds of years. Winemaking in a French Chteau is a traditional workmanship that has developed over many years of experience and is handed down from generation to generation. It is not through scientific methodology, advanced studies and technology that wine is ordinarily made in France. Although, this has been changing over the past decade. French consumers (since childhood) grow accustomed to wine drinking. Wine is almost always served with meals, lunch and dinner. France is the largest producer of wine in the world. In France, wine is drunk either socially or mainly paired with food. Red wines from the Bordeaux region are produced with the intention to be drunk within 15 -20 years of aging when they reach complete maturity. The French consumer palate is accustomed to wines that are well balanced with less alcohol, good acidity, subtle fruit and therefore will age well.

Petroni Vineyards:

Dionysus Winery

Appellation:

2005 Petroni Brunello Di Sonoma:

Richly colored, dark ruby. A generous nose, exhibiting the typical earthy notes derived from our estate vineyard in a pool of ripe dark cherry and berry fruit. Cigar box, cedar, tar, walnut and licorice all combine to create a complex and rich aromatic profile. The palate is full bodied and mouth coating; earthy, intense, loads of cherry fruit. A classic vintage not to be missed. The Brunello di Sonoma is our flagship wine made from 100% Sangiovese Grosso grapes, which is widely considered the Sangiovese clone par excellence. The wine is produced completely from our low -yielding, organic estate vineyard "Poggio alla Pietra" located in the west Mayacamas Mountains which overlook the Sonoma Valley. Excellent sun exposure and optimum climate ensure the slow ripening of the grapes, which in turn, makes wine of great depth and complexity.

Dionysus Winery is a boutique winery in the heart of the Sonoma Valley. We specialize in small lots of handmade wines. For the time being, we are limiting our varietals to a Russian River Valley Pinot Noir and a Sonoma Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. We have a simple philosophy; wine making is an art and rather than mass producing above average wines; we would rather strive for perfection. You should be on the lookout however for a new signature varietal that Dionysus Winery plans to introduce in 2012. We wont tell you what it is but if you read more about Cecilia, you shouldnt have a problem figuring out what that is.

Cabernet Sauvignon: 2011 Petroni Rosato di Sonoma:

Dark pink-red with a dazzling vibrancy. Soft fruity aromas reminiscent of wild strawberries, watermelon, vanilla and cherry blossom. Initially the mouth feel is round and generous as a result of barrel fermentation. The natural acidity and intensity refreshes the palate and leaves a long, clean and lasting finish offering beautiful incisive red berry and stone fruit. Great on its own as an aperitif around the pool or paired with Antipasto dishes. The Rosato di Sonoma is bled from the best parcels of fruit throughout our two Estate owned and operated vineyards. All of our grapes are organically produced, fastidiously maintained, and low cropping to ensure the production of super premium wines. The 2011 vintage was long and cool allowing for intense concentration and excellent natural acidity, ideal for the production of this particular style of wine. Our Sonoma Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is a blend from the finest handpicked fruit at Los Chamizal and Emery Vineyard, Distinctive aromas of dark fruit, liquorice. On the palate, the flavors explode with vibrant notes of ripe blackberry, blueberry, cherry cola, black tea, pepper, and dark chocolate. The tannins are firm and the finish is long and smooth. Overall, a spectacular expression of a pure Cabernet Sauvignon made with world -class fruit grown in Sonoma Valley. Ripe blueberries, dark cherry, cassis and vanilla combine to make this wine unique. The soft tannin and sweet oak balance lead to a lingering finish.

2010 Pinot Noir:

As the Elysian Fields are to the Greek Gods of Olympus, so is the Russian River Valley to Sonoma County wines; particularly the Pinot Noir. We source fruit from 4 different blocks with 4 distinct clones: 777, 667, Pommard & 115. We fermented on 4 different batches allowing each lot to provide the unique blend; rich with complexities. Fresh red fruit and character distinguish this Russian River Pinot Noir from the same varietal of other appellations. Fresh raspberry, blackberries, soft notes of dark chocolate layers of roasted nuts combine to make this wine unique. A balanced intensity of rich cherry, ripe raspberry envelops the mid palate. The intense flavors of dark chocolate slowly saturate the back palate. Soft tones of caramel are revealed in the long, caressing mouth filling finish.

2007 Petroni Rosso di Sonoma:

Sweet ripe blackberry, black cherry, fruit cake spices, vanilla, caramel and floral notes flood the senses with a hint of citrus zest and cedar in the background. The ripe flavors are balanced nicely with tangy acidity and subdued tannins which keep this wine dense, fresh and easy to drink. The cast of characters for our blend are gathered together from our Estate Vineyards high in the western side of the Mayacamas Mountains. The rich volcanic soils and high elevations of our Cavedale Road Vineyard impart power and dimension to our Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon grapes. The main character of this ensemble is the Syrah, which is grown at a 2000 foot elevation in our Trinity Ranch block (known for loamy soil conditions). This gives our Syrah grapes a rich earthiness that balances the jazzy Cavedale Road fruit.

2010 Crosby Roamann Carneros Chardonnay:

We are very lucky to have sourced this one-acre plot of 13 year old clone 96 Chardonnay near Carneros Creek. These mature vines produce tiny, concentrated berries (chicks and hens) that retain acidity at low sugar levels while reaching phenolic ripeness. The fruit was harvested October 1 by hand, at dawn, and averaged five tons per acre.

2007 Petroni Cabernet Sauvignon:

A very expressive nose exhibiting classic Cabernet characters of dark cherry, cassis, red fruits and a dash of sweet mint harmoniously complimented with oak which derives notes of chocolate, vanilla and fine spices. Broad, mouth filling, evenly textured and well-balanced, this wine demonstrates perfectly what a great Sonoma Cabernet should taste like. Smooth tannins, ripe fluid fruit, and a dash of herb round out the varietal characters enhanced with some mocha, cedar and spice from the French oak to complete the flavor profile.

Wine Enthusiast - June Editors Pick - 90pts.

An absolutely first-class Chardonnay, although with production of only 100 cases, it may be somewhat difficult to find. It shows a near-perfect balance of acidity, oak, minerality and lees, with a touch of sour-lemon candy drop.S.H.

Pale straw in color. Typically aromatic the wine offers citrus zest, grapefruit and passion fruit complimented with herbs, spice and slate characters adding some depth and terroir. The palate is intense and tight at this stage. Beautiful mineral acidity threads through the rich fruit. Sturdy in structure, well balanced this is a serious wine offering New World fruit and Old World intensity and complexity. The fruit for the 2011 vintage was sourced exclusively from our Estate vineyards in the Mayacama Mountains, overlooking Sonoma Valley. One third of the fruit came from our home block on Cavedale Rd and the remainder from our Trinity Ranch vineyard. The Cavedale parcel offers ripe and generous fruit, tropical notes and a floral bouquet, well complimented with the tight structure, herbal notes and mineral steeliness from the Trinity Ranch. Our St. Helena Sauvignon Blanc hails from Wilson Ranch, a valley floor vineyard north of town, west of the Napa River. The vines for this wine are large, trained in a modified VSP quad with root systems in a deep composite soil of grey clay, sand, and large gravel. This is traditional and varietal driven Napa Valley Sauvignon Blanc at its best, with ultra-ripe notes of candied apricots, quince, pear, and vanilla on the finish.

Petroni Estate Olive Oil:

Petroni Vineyards Extra Virgin Olive Oil was an integral part of Lorenzos vision when he purchased and established the winery. He is committed to growing and producing oil that comes 100% from olive varieties not commonly found in the United States. Therefore, in 1992 Lorenzo had 10,000 seedlings from Italy air -freighted to California; Frantoio, Moraiolo, Coratina, Pendolino and Leccino. Following grueling mandatory two year quarantine, the surviving 1,200 Olive trees were planted on the rugged and rocky hillsides of the Estate and managed according to organic principles. Since 2011 Petroni Olive Oil has been entirely produced on the property with the installation of a state of the art olive mill. Certified Organic by the CCOF for many years now, Petroni Vineyards Extra Virgin Olive Oil is widely considered amongst the best available.

Years ago, my dad wanted to create a club called the Bastardo Club after the eponymous grape variety that forms the foundation of our Tawny Port. He saw himself as the Big or Grand Bastard, and other members as little bastards. His title was fitting. Not literally, but in a figurative or metaphorical sense consistent with his humor, and the difficult nature of the Bastardo grape. It was mostly tasting room chit chat, and the club never came to be. Over the years many of you have asked us to start a traditional wine club. Im not really sure why we resisted, but ultimately we wanted to make sure we did it right. With that in mind, weve decided to launch the St. Amant Wine Club or Bootleg Society as it will be known. Instead of being a little bastard, club members get to join us as fellow Bootleggers. For those that may not know the story, our winery came to be in 1981, when a less than scrupulous winery filed bankruptcy on us shortly after harvest. We had sold them all our grapes. My father bootlegged the young wines out of their cellar and launched St. Amant Winery. Our intent is to build upon that original adventuresome spirit, more closely connect our customers with our hand crafted wines and to extend that experience through memorable events, tastings, and all around fun.

2011 Verdelho:
St. Amant is only one of a handful of California producers of this exotic Portuguese white. Bright crisp lemony flavors highlight this delicious summer sipper. Delightfully refreshing, Verdelho's naturally high acidity make it an ideal companion for the dinner table.

2011 Sempre Vive Chardonnay:

2011 was a cold year and tough on most varieties but Chardonnay did very well because of the flexibility in styles that it can do well. This 2011 Chardonnay is a non malo-lactic style with only a light oak touch, a charming and delicate wine with a drier finish. The nose has fresh pineapple and lemon chiffon pie, with a hint of light vanilla. The palate is fresh, crisp, and bright with green apple fruit and again a light pineapple flavor. Finish is light and clean, encouraging the next step.

2008 Sempre Vive Miscela:

Saturated blackish-ruby hue with a purple edge. High toned, minty cassis, spicy currant and pepper aromas have a lavish oak influence. A rich entry leads a full bodied palate with fruit driven, cordial live flavors. Very ripe through the lengthy oak tinged finish.

2011 Speakeasy Red:

Keeping with the prohibition theme, this actual blend is top secret, but they will tell you that Marians Zinfandel comprises about 60% of the blend. The remaining components include Barbera, Souzao, Tempranillo and a final secret spice to finish the wine. The wine is a an authentic full -bodied red with ripe berry flavors, spice and underlying earth tones that reflect the sun drenched vineyards of Lodi.

2009 Bootleg Port:

The wine has a dense dark purple to ruby red color. Upfront aromas of crushed berries, spice, and nuts linger in the air. Mouthwatering and delicious with ripe fruit flavors and a smooth almost nutty finish. The wine is vintage port-like in character and will benefit from further cellaring. Excellent stand alone after dinner wine, but lends itself particularly well to chocolate based desserts, stilton chesses, fruits and nuts. Snicker bars are a winemaker favorite.

2011 Barbera: 2011 MohrFry Ranch Old Vine Zinfandel:

This Zinfandel comes from a blend of two old Zinfandels vineyards planted in 1901 and 1944 on Mohr-Fry Ranch in the heart of the Lodi Appellation. A big ripe chewy Zin made in style to highlight the rich raspberry and spicy blackberry fruit character of these old Lodi Zin vineyards. The wine is loaded with flavor that should develop nicely over the next 3-5 years but its hard to resist in its exuberant youth. The 2011 marks their eleventh vintage from this 38 year old vineyard NE of Lodi, CA. The wine offers bright cherry, earth, and berry flavors with supple tannins that linger on the finish. It begs for pizza or pasta, but goes particularly well with Bagna Cauda.

Tawny Port:
This wine is blended from 3 barrels one from 2003,2004 and 2005. The barrels were left untouched for the past 6-8 years to slowly age. These barrels were untouched and left in their metal shed to bake throughout the summer concentrating the flavors to reveal an intensely complex wine. The Tawny Port boasts a deep amber hue with stunning aromas that leap out of the glass and fill the room. The flavors envelop your mouth, coat your tongue and leave long nutty smoky finish that lingers for minutes. A rare wine not to be missed!

2009 Tempranillo:
The 2009 Tempranillo is their ninth vintage with this noble Spanish variety that has found a natural home in our estate vineyard. The wine is a big, chewy, well structured red with full , round aromas of spice, tobacco, and dark fruits. It has a ripe mouth coating texture that provides a good and healthy finish.
