Legal Writing Contests

Lists of Legal Writing Contests can be found in two locations: 1. 2. On Professor Bowmans faculty bio page, and On the bulletin board outside Professor Bowmans office, 208 in the Dana Administration Building.

Here is an opportunity that is always available from the Journal of the Patent and Trademark Office Society Journal. Topic: "The purpose of the Journal is to provide a medium for the dissemination and exchange of ideas in the fields of patents, trademarks, and copyrights. Therefore, examples of some pertinent topics of interest for authors might include (1) discussion of patent law and court decisions, (2) discussion of IP across nations, (3) discussion of the patenting process, (4) reviews of books relating to IP, and (5) ethics in IP law." Submission: Contact, Anastasia Midkiff, Executive Director, at a.midkiff@jptos.org If you are selected for publication, your article is automatically entered to compete for the yearly Dr. Joseph Rossman Memorial Award for best publication in the Journal.

Missouri University/CIArb (Chartered Institute of Arbitrators) Writing Competition Topic: Any topic that has some relationship to the symposium topic of international commercial arbitration, transnational litigation, and the intersection thereof. Deadline: August 15, 2011 Prize: $300 prize to the competition winner. The winner may also have his or her submission published in the Journal of Dispute Resolution. Deadline: September 9, 2011 Prizes: First place: $1,000, publication in the Whittier Law Review, and travel to the IP Symposium in Costa Mesa, California; second and third place: $500.

James E. Beckley Writing Competition (sponsored by the Public Investors Arbitration Bar Association (PIABA)) Topic: Any aspect of securities law; securities arbitration; the Federal Arbitration Act (9 U.S.C. 114); or FINRA Code of Arbitration (effective April 16, 2007), and any changes or proposed changes to that Code. Deadline: October 3, 2011 Awards: First place: $1,000; second place: $750; and third place: $500. The firstplace paper will be published in the PIABA Bar Journal, and the second- and third-place papers may also be selected for publication.
