GRAPHING PROJECT

GOAL GROUPS Create your own picture using equations with restricted domains or ranges. This project may be done individually or in groups of two or three of your choice. However, groups will have to complete more requirements than individuals.

REQUIREMENTS The picture must be recognizable. Avoid geometric shapes this is your chance to be creative and original. To make it a little easier, you are allowed to draw additional segments to help form the final picture. The picture must include a minimum of 12 equations for an individual, 20 equations for a pair, and 25 equations for a group of three. Each equation will correspond to a segment of the final drawing and must include appropriate constraints/restrictions (domain/range). You should record each equation along with its domain/range on the provided Equation Documentation Sheet. You may use any combination of equations such as linear, quadratic, radical, absolute value, conic section, etc. You must include the following (based on group size): for individuals: at least three linear equations and at least two curves for pairs: at least four linear equations and at least three curves for groups of 3: at least five linear equations and at least four curves You must turn in two copies of your drawing. One must use colored pencils to identify which equation goes with which segment. The other must be a neatly colored final copy that has been outlined in a black fine-tip marker. The rubric must be turned in with your final project. It is on the back of this sheet. If working in a group, each member is responsible for submitting his/her own sheet.

CHECKPOINTS Due Date Monday, April 29 Tuesday, May 7 Friday, May 10

Requirement Explanation of the concept of your drawing Rough draft with equations Completed project

Teacher Initials/Date

Final Project must include:

Project Description/Rubric (per individual or group member) Equation Documentation Sheet 2 Final Copies of Graph

GRADE

The final project will be graded using the rubric provided & will count as a 100 pt test grade for the final quarter. Each checkpoint will count as a 10 pt classwork grade.

GRAPHING PROJECT RUBRIC

Criterion Excellent (4 points)
There are no errors. All equations & restrictions match the segments that are graphed.

__________________________

Good (3 Points)
One equation &/or its restrictions dont match its graph, 1-2 for pairs, 1-3 for threes. Individuals use at least 10 equations, pairs use 17-19, and threes use 2124. One required equation is missing. Most equations and line segments are matched by color. Second copy is in color & outlined.

Fair (2 Points)
Two equations &/or their restrictions dont match their graphs, 3-4 for pairs, 4-6 for threes. Individuals use at least 6 equations, pairs use 10-16, and threes use 1620. Two required equations are missing. Few equations and line segments are matched by color. Second copy is not in color or outlined. Picture is overly simple such as a square or other geometric shape.

Poor (1 point)
Three or more equations &/or their restrictions do not match their graphs, 5 for pairs, 7 for threes. Individuals use less than 6 equations, pairs less than 10, and threes less than 15. Three required equations are missing.

No Evidence (0 points)

Accuracy

Did not provide any equations or restrictions.

Number of Equations

Individuals use at least 12 equations, pairs use 20, and threes use 25.

No equations given.

Types of Equations
(based on size of group)

All required equations are present. Two final copies are provided. All equations & line segments are matched by color. Second copy is outlined in fineprint black marker & neatly colored.

No required equations are present.

Final Copies/ Color Coding

Color coding is not used. Only 1 final copy is provided.

Final graphs are not complete.

Picture

Picture is an easily identified object.

Picture is not easy to identify.

Graphs do not form a recognizable shape or picture.

Project is exactly the same as another project or there is no picture at all.

EQUATION DOCUMENTATION
In the table below, list the equations you used to create your picture along with the appropriate domain and/or range for the graph. Please write neatly to insure your equations are not misunderstood. In the color column, just scribble the color you will use to graph that equation.
