Stem Sealing
SealMaster

V-ring Stem Packing Belleville Washers

Our extremely high cycle stem sealing design is accomplished by a double sealing system. The high performance of KTM ball valves is mainly due to the unique SealMaster stem seal arrangement, which provides primary sealing. It has been specially designed and constructed to prevent line fluid permeation and resultant leakage. On top of this arrangement are multiple layers of V-ring stem packing, which act as secondary sealing. A set of Belleville washers automatically and constantly compresses the seals to adjust for wear, pressure and temperature fluctuations. Every KTM ball valve is a stalwart barrier against fugitive emissions.

Main Features of SealMaster Patented Stem Seal Arrangement

Multiple sealings up to 6 areas (see Views 1-6) for pressure and high vacuum. Encapsulated Static sealing achieved on upper tost seal. Constant sealing force reflects to stem (see arrows A) and makes stem primary sealing Positive. Excellent wear resistance on lower tost seal (50% SS filled PTFE), 1000 times greater than that of PTFE to prolong the compensation of Belleville washers.

The live-loaded SealMaster is a combination of three components: (A) a cup and cone PFA/TFE upper tost seal; (B) a cup and cone sintered stainless steel 316 center load ring, and (C) a flat stainless steel/TFE lower tost seal. When tightened, the live loaded stem pulls up, compressing the stem tost seal. As this happens, material from upper and lower tost seal extrudes between stem and body enclosures (see Views 1-6). The surfaces between the bottom of the lower tost seal and top of the stem flange are smooth and all rotation occurs between these two surfaces, leaving the stem tost seal static to create the best possible seal. As rotation continues, components bed in and keep seal performance constant with usage. As operating wear takes place, the stem tost seal can be re-tightened to recommended torques multiple times.

Features

ISO5211 Actuator Mounting

Machined automation pad allows precise mounting of actuator; mounting bolts independent from stem-packing gland bolts. Exact alignment reduces torque requirements and helps prevent out-of-line wear.

Fugitive Emissions Control

Multiple layers of adjustable PTFE Chevron packing rings for non-flammable service, and Soft Carbon braided and die-formed for flammable service.

Live Loaded Seals Radial Tost Bearings

Radial loading absorbed, and friction from axial stem loading reduced. Dual tost bearings support stem for extended cycle life and superior thermal characteristics. Belleville washer keeps constant force on stem-seal packing for seal integrity and extended valve life.

Blowout-proof Stem and Primary Stem Seal

Stem shoulder is an integral part of the stem, retained internally to help prevent stem blowout from pressure in body cavity. Primary stem seal prevents leakage to atmosphere, also serves as low-torque bearing.

Precise, Smooth Ball

Ball sphericity and surface finish are key factors in valve life, pressure-holding capability, and operating torque. KTM ball specifications are unmatched: Sphericity : to 0.0008" and surface finish 4 microinches RMS.

Cast Bleed-port Boss

Provisions for drain bleed port if desired. (not shown)

Anti-static Grounding Rigid Split Body

Designed with extra bolts to assure positive alignment and maximum protection against bending stresses in the piping and forces produced by thermal distortion; seal is fire-safe metal-to-metal. Retained wire-ring provides positive ground for use with volatile or flammable liquids. (not shown)

KTM Ball Valves

Omni II Split Body Floating Ball Valve - Full and Reduced Bore
Seat Design Selection
The Omni II is available in three basic styles of seats soft, hard and metal, each offering a range of performance suitable to many applications.

Soft Seat
Choose from three soft seat materials: The standard E-seat PTFE/PFA copolymer, PEEK and PTFE. Each type of seat is retained in the same manner, with the valve body machined with a protective lip designed to eliminate seat deformation and cold flow. This same lip acts as a secondary back-up seal, which forms a metal-to-metal contact in the event the primary soft seal is destroyed in a fire. The E-seat offers process purity, strength, integrity, low permeability and high resiliency. It is composed of a unique molecularly enhanced copolymer of PTFE and PFA. It offers a full range of properties formerly requiring two separate materials. The E-seat provides pressure and temperature capabilities previously available only with glass or carbon fiber-reinforced PTFE. In hightemperature operations, the seat remains white, eliminating the risk of color contamination associated with seats made from darker reinforced materials. The E-seat is excellent on a wide variety of applications but is particularly recommended for use on styrene and butadiene, where low permeability is a performance factor; and on low-pressure steam, where flaking of virgin PTFE is a problem. It s also recommended for use on food and beverage, pharmaceutical and biotech, paper, clean gas and any other applications where product purity and the lack of foreign fillers are critical to success.

Fire-safe Seat Design

The Popcorn Factor

The photographs show a virgin PTFE seat after attack by reactive monomers (in this case, styrene). The materials molecular matrix has been penetrated by uninhibited monomers due to vapor pressure, allowing a polymeric reaction to take place. Commonly called popcorn polymerization, this reaction can totally destroy seat material. In the second photograph, you can see the results of a field test of the E-seat copolymer by KTM. Using butadiene, generally considered the worst-case scenario due to its small molecular size, the test ran for two years at 120 psi and 180F. The seats experienced minimum distortion and, after the two-year period, did not leak in service. Pressure tests after removal, at 1.1 times design, also showed no seat leakage. The photo shows two of the seats tested and for comparison, a new seat is shown in the foreground.

Pressure/Temperature Ratings
This graph shows pressure and temperature ratings of the three seat materials with a full bore of 3 and 4 inches and a reduced bore of 4 inches. The E-seat provides characteristics identical to the carbon-filled material, while retaining its pure white color. The same is true at full bores ranging from 1/2" to 8" and reduced bores of 6" to 10". KTMs PTFE/PFA copolymer E-seat offers the protection from color contamination as with virgin PTFE seats but, unlike virgin PTFE, it offers equal or better strength, integrity, permeability and resiliency previously associated only with reinforced PTFE.

KTM Ball Valves

NoFill Cavity Free Valve - Full Bore, EB100 Omni II Style

This technology from KTM is superior because: The micro-space is designed to severely restrict the area where product can collect and build up over time. The mirror-finished interior helps drastically reduce the potential for bonding. There is no excess material to flake off with wear, helping reduce product contamination. Solidification of media is much more manageable, should a severe process change occur. The stainless steel interior lasts much longer, resulting in less down-time. This, plus easy maintenance, translates to a lower total cost of ownership.

Applications
Styrene Butadiene Methylene chloride Starches Slurries Food processing Fermentation Pharmaceuticals

Proprietary Micro-space Design Helps Reduce Reactive Buildup.

A frequent problem in processing products ranging from reactive monomers such as styrene and butadiene to starches and slurries is that they can, and do, build up and polymerize or ferment within the cavities or open spaces inside the valves controlling the process. Until now the response to this problem has been to fill the cavities with PFA, FEP or another foreign material.

A more complete solution is KTMs NoFill valve. As its name implies, the NoFill uses no filling material of any kind. Instead, the cavity has been completely eliminated except for the micro-space required for ball movement (shown here in red). Depending upon the valve size, that micro-space ranges from 0.5 to 1.0 millimeter. All wetted surfaces are stainless steel, polished to a mirror finish.

NoFill Cavity Free Valve - Full Bore, EB100 Omni II Style

More Reasons to Choose KTMs NoFill
The KTM NoFill features a bi-directional floating design with maximum Cv values that provide minimal pressure drop through the valve. The NoFills spherical-shaped seats help ensure 360 sealing. The seat itself is KTMs E-seat, a unique molecularlyenhanced copolymer of PTFE and PFA. This strong, low-permeability material provides chemical resistance to reactive monomers. In high temperature operations, the seat remains white, eliminating the risk of color contamination associated with seats made from darker reinforced materials. For abrasive processes, the NoFill is also available with metal seats. The NoFill valve comes in two-way and Y-pattern diverter configurations.

KTM Ball Valves

KTM 3-Way Ball Valve Application Information - Full Bore, Reduced Bore L Port and T Port
Model EO3100 and EO3800 ball valves are used for diverting or mixing fluids. The 2-seat design reduces torque considerably when compared to 4-seat design with standard soft seats. Can be made suitable for high and low temperature applications. Model E3900 and E3200 ball valves are used for diverting or mixing fluids. The 4-seat design offers additional port arrangements. A greater Cv value is achieved in most sizes. Media trapped in the valve cavity is reduced substantially with additional seats.

In the L port configuration, the 4-seat design has the capacity to function either as a diverter valve or a block valve As with all floating 3-way ball valve designs, flow path pressure must be slightly higher than the shut-off pressure. For example on Form 2 and 4: PB < PC where PB = Pressure in line B and Pc = Pressure in line C.

A fire-tested system can be achieved by replacing the 3-way with Omni II fire-tested (API 607 Rev. 4 and EXES 3-14-1-21) on two ports, thus creating a 3-way L port or a T port. Allows maintenance on equipment that must remain in the system. Allows two pieces of equipment to be used simultaneously.

KTM ball valves have been widely used in low temperature and cryogenic applications, including LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas) which is fast becoming a better alternative source of energy. With a proven design and after many successful references, the KTM brand name continues to be preferred by endusers as the process quality ball valve of choice.

Excellent seat and seal design minimizes leakage. Low operating torque for smoother operations. Fire-safe design. Fugitive emission compliance. Rigid body construction minimizes thermal shrinkage.

Features
Extension bonnet protects the gland packing. Two types of extension bonnet (short and long) are available to better locate the Gland Packing at ambient temperature zone. This will help protect it from freeze-damage caused by low temperature fluid. Cavity pressure relief.

KTM Ball Valves

Single V Control Ball Valve - Full Bore and Reduced Bore

Features
Rotary-valve design provides shearing action between the V-notch ball and the seat, promoting a smooth, nonclogging operation. Straight-through flow design provides high capacity for fibrous slurries, steam, liquids and gasses. With a single-seat design, torque is lower than typical trunnion design valves, for ease of operation and reduced actuator cost. Two seat designs: Laminated seat provides Class IV shut-off and withstands tough operating conditions. Thick (solid) seat for high-velocity and abrasive or erosive service. Segmented, v-notched ball features high rangeability and smooth throttling action. Choice of full and reduced port areas, providing the right flow capacity for every application at low cost. Heavy-duty, stainless steel stem for high strength and rigidity. Sphericity tolerance of the balls, 0.0008", and a 4 RMS surface finish are unsurpassed. Multiple, adjustable ring packing allows easy adjustment without requiring valve disassembly or actuator removal. Corrosion-resistant bearings assure lasting, smooth and easy valve operation. ANSI 150 and 300 lb. bodies, both available in stainless or carbon steel. Fugitive emissions control for flammable and non-flammable applications. Positive alignment of split body. Static electricity grounding device. Automatic cavity pressure relief. Meets NACE MR01.75 for sulfide cracking resistance.

KTM Ball Valves

Dual V High Performance Control Ball Valve - 1" to 8" Flanged and Flangeless
Features
Unique Dual V-ball features a secondary (Small) V-notch allowing extremely small, accurate flow rates. The primary (Large) V-ball provides straight through, non-clogging flow, allowing a large amount of heterogeneous fluid. Dual V-ball allows rate changes and controls fluids with a rangeability in excess of 250:1. Nearly equal percent flow characteristic. Rotary-valve design provides shearing action between the V-notch ball and the seat, promoting a smooth, non-clogging operation. Spring supported, stellited metal seat. Class V shut-off. Unibody design reduces stress. Minimum body cavity reduces build-up. Fugitive emission package available for both flammable and non-flammable service. Available in flangeless or flanged construction. Multiple, adjustable ring packing allows easy adjustment without requiring valve disassembly or actuator removal. Integral mounting pad. Static electricity grounding device. Positive position indication. Meets NACE MR01.75 for sulfide cracking resistance.

Special Tests

KTM Ball Valves

Dual V High Performance Control Ball Valve - 1" to 8" Flanged and Flangeless
Design and Construction Integral Mounting Pad
Machined actuator pad allows precise mounting of actuator. Mounting bolts are independent from the stem-packing gland bolts. This exact alignment reduces torque and prevents out-of-line wear on the stem and packing.

Fugitive Emissions Control Packages

Available for both flammable and non-flammable service.

Stem to Disc Connection

A tapered pin connection is used to ensure accurate control of flow, which also results in a high resolution of 250:1.

Positive Locking, End Cap Retention

Wire-ring with three point locking device assures a tight fit.

Versatile End-Connection
The Unibody design is available in flangeless or flanged construction and meets I.S.A. S-75.04 and ANSI B16.10 face-to-face dimensions.

Minimum Body Cavity Unique Dual-V Ball

A secondary (Small) V-notch allows extremely small, accurate flow rates with the additional benefit of the primary (Large) V-ball providing straight through, non-clogging flow which, if necessary, will shear slurries and fibers. Reduces build-up of transition process materials and the segmented V-ball eliminates freeze-up.

Unibody Design
This proven structural design enhances piping integrity by reducing stress and additionally eliminates potential leak paths.

Engineering data for the sizing, selection and specification of KTM Ball Valves
Ball Valve Sizing Formulas
Flow coefficient, or Cv, by definition is the volume of water in gallons per minute that will flow through a given opening with a pressure drop of one psi. All Cv values shown for KTM ball valves are based on water at 60F. Formulas shown below will assist in obtaining the correct Cv for other fluids, gas, and steam. Where: Cv = Valve flow coefficient G = Specific gravity at flowing temperature (Water 1.0 at 60F) Q = Liquid rate (g.p.m.) Q = Gas flow rate at 14.7 psia and temperature 60F (scfh) W = Flow rate (lb./hr.) P1 = Upstream pressure (psia) P2 = Downstream pressure (psia) P = Pressure drop P1 - P2 (psia) T = Flowing temperature (F)
Notes: 1. For gas or steam service when P1 P2 < P (P1 + P2) = 0.87P1 2 2. For gas service, no temperature correction is necessary between 32F and 149F, but at any other temperature a correction is necessary.

Tsh = Steam superheat (F)

KTM Ball Valves

Engineering data for the sizing, selection and specification of KTM Ball Valves
Flow Characteristics and Sizing Coefficients
Since KTM ball valves have inherent equal percentage flow characteristics, they are ideally suited for control applications over the widest possible range of flow. Equal percentage flow characteristics, in simple terms, means that a given percentage change in the valve opening will produce the same percentage change in flow. The two tables below, one for full bore and the other for reduced bore, are provided to assist in sizing KTM ball valves for control applications.

Pre-Vac Seal Ball Valves for Vacuum Service

KTM Pre-Vac Seal Ball Valves, 1/2" to 12" (full bore) are recommended for vacuum services down to 20 microns. When ordering, specify Vacuum Service. Both T and G seats are available for vacuum services. When KTM ball valves are for higher vacuum service, the valves must be thoroughly cleaned, more precisely machined, and subjected to a leakage test. For high vacuum applications, please contact your sales representative.

Ball Valve Leakage Allowance

When KTM standard valves are used for vacuum service, 0.01 to 1.00 Lusec (1 Hg/sec.) of body leakage will be detected for sizes 1/2" to 12" (full bore). Major causes of leakage are penetration through body casting of gas or steam from oil and water deposited on components or contained in the casting. Seat leakage is negligible for actual services.

KTM Ball Valves

E-seat Valve Technology

General Information
Composed of a unique molecularly enhanced copolymer of PTFE and PFA, KTMs E-seat offers a full range of properties formerly requiring two separate materials. The E-seat copolymer provides pressure available only with glass fiber filament or carbon-reinforced PTFE. In high-temperature operations, the seat remains white, eliminating the risk of color contamination associated with seats made from darker reinforced materials. Standard in all KTM floating-style ball valves, the E-seat is excellent on a wide variety of applications but is particularly recommended for use on styrene and butadiene, where low permeability is a performance factor; and on low-pressure steam, where flaking of virgin PTFE is a problem. It is also recommended for use on food and beverage, pharmaceutical and biotech, paper, clean gas and any other applications where product purity and the lack of foreign fillers such as glass are critical to the user.

Properties and Performance

Figure 1 compares the performance of the E-seat with seats made from virgin PTFE and 10-20% carbon-filled PTFE. Note that the E-seat has: A tensile strength greater than or comparable to the other two. Greater compressive strength than the others. The least creep percentage of the three materials, which gives it the least distortion that causes cold flow. Greater hardness (Shore Durometer) than virgin PTFE. The highest coefficient of linear thermal expansion, translating into better flexibility. A coefficient of wear significantly below that of virgin PTFE. A specific gravity and friction coefficient equal to that of virgin PTFE.

Figure 2 data show the E-seat to have superior characteristics throughout the full range of temperatures. Data was collected over a 24-hour period with a fixed pressure of 1991 psi. Because compressive creep is of such major importance in a valve seat, results from a wider range of temperatures are shown.

KTM Ball Valves

Operating Torque for Trunnion Mounted Ball Valves EO1100, EO8100, EO1200 and EO8200 (Sizes 2" to 24")
The enclosed valve torques are intended as a guide for the selection of the proper actuator for us on KTM ball valves. The torques reflect net peak (no safety factor) at breakaway. Normally, running is 25% less and seating is 10% less.

Procedure for Torque Selection

1. From the Pressure/Temperature charts (Contact your sales representative), determine which seat should be used. 2. Select valve torque Factor I, II, or III from the following table.

Factor

Condition of Fluid
Clean Liquid (see Note)

Temperature
-4F to Seal Limit (for Pressure/Temperature chart, contact your sales representative)

II

Solvent or Dry Gas -4F to Seal Limit (see Note) (for Pressure/Temperature chart, contact your sales representative) Clean Liquid -58F to -4F -4F to Seal Limit (for Pressure/Temperature chart, contact your sales representative)

III

Slurry

Solvent or Dry Gas -58F to -4F

Note:

Example Clean Liquid = Water or Oil (Lubricant Effect) Example Solvent = Gasoline or Kerosene (Washing Effect)

Example:
Service conditions = 10" line, handling natural gas at a maximum differential pressure of 800 psi, and a maximum temperature of 100F. Customer desires full bore ball valve, flange ends, 600 ANSI. From Factor Chart above, Dry Gas has a torque of Factor II. On Factor II Chart (page 78), locate 800 psi column under Differential Pressure. Proceed downward until 10" Full Bore (F.B.) row is intersected. Torque in this block reads 17,200 in/lbs. This is net peak torque at breakaway.
