Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince novel

(new introduced characters)

This is an index or lists of characters that were introduced in Harry Potter and the Half
Blood Prince novel.

The order that the characters are seen or mentioned is from the American version of the
book. In other languages, the order may or may not be different.

Chapter 01: The Other Minister

• The Muggle Prime Minister


The Prime Minister is never named in the series, but since the Harry Potter series is set
mostly in the 1990's he is most likely Sir John Major, the Prime Minister of Britain from
1990-1997. However during the last half of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince and
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, there was a change of government in Britain and
Tony Blair became Prime Minister, serving from 1997-2007.

• Herbert Chorley
Herbert Chorley was a Muggle Junior Minister in 1996. He was placed under a botched
Imperius Curse that left him acting like a duck. Ministry of Magic officials placed him in
St Mungo's Hospital for Magical Maladies and Injuries for treatment.

Chapter 02: Spinner's End


• Yaxley (Confirmed: Included in the movie)
Served Lord Voldemort as a Death Eater during the First and Second Wizarding Wars. At
the height of the latter, when Voldemort was in control of the Ministry of Magic, Yaxley
became the head of the Department of Magical Law Enforcement. He is known only by
his surname and is described as having blunt features and an unpleasant smile.

He also participated in the Battle of the Astronomy Tower.

• Amycus Carrow (Confirmed: Included in the movie)


Amycus Carrow is a Death Eater, and the brother of Alecto Carrow. He is described as
being squat and lumpy, with a lopsided leer and a wheezy giggle, much like his sister.

• Alecto Carrow (Confirmed: Included in the movie)


Alecto Carrow is the sister of Amycus Carrow, and one of a small handful of female
Death Eaters. She is described as being a stocky little woman, and shares several qualities
with her brother such as his squatness and his wheezy giggle.

The Carrows were supporters of Lord Voldemort during the First Wizarding War, but
managed to avoid being imprisoned in Azkaban. Although they believed that the Dark
Lord would not return, they returned to him once he did and took part in the Second
Wizarding War.

Chapter 03: Will and Won't


No new characters are introduced in this chapter.

Chapter 04: Horace Slughorn


• Horace Slughorn (Confirmed: Included in the movie)
The current Potions Master and Head of Slytherin House at Hogwarts School of
Witchcraft and Wizardry.
This new character played most important parts in the story.

• Dirk Cresswell (Confirmed: Included in the movie)


Dirk Cresswell was a Muggle-born wizard who attended Hogwarts School of Witchcraft
and Wizardry, becoming a favorite student of Potions professor Horace Slughorn.

• Barnabus Cuffe (Confirmed: Included in the movie)


Barnabas Cuffe is the current editor of the Daily Prophet, working in their main offices
in Diagon Alley. While studying at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, he was
a favourite of Horace Slughorn, and part of the Slug Club.

• Ambrosius Flume
Ambrosius Flume and his wife run Honeydukes sweetshop in Hogsmeade.

• Ciceron Harkiss
Ciceron Harkiss gave Ambrosius Flume his first job after an introduction by Horace
Slughorn
• Gwenog Jones
One of Slughorn's last students before he retired in the 1980s,
and Horace Slughorn's all-time favourite students, making her a member of his "Slug
Club".

Chapter 05: An Excess of Phlegm


No new characters are introduced in this chapter.

Chapter 06: Draco's Detour


• Arkie Philpott (mentioned only)
Arkie Philpott was a wizard who was on the receiving end of a Probity Probe at
Gringotts Wizarding Bank after the Goblins who ran the bank tightened security in the
wake of Lord Voldemort's return.

• Verity
Verity is a shop assistant that worked for Fred and George Weasley in Weasleys' Wizard
Wheezes.

• Fenrir Greyback (Confirmed: Included in the movie)


Fenrir Greyback is a werewolf notorious for his savagery.
He is a leader in his community and strives to infect as many people as possible with
lycanthropy, hoping to build an army strong enough to take over the wizarding
community eventually. During the Second Wizarding War, he and the pack of
werewolves he led allied themselves with Lord Voldemort, though they were not
considered Death Eaters. Greyback fought in the Battle of the Astronomy Tower, during
which he expressed an eagerness to bite the children of Hogwarts and left Bill Weasley
badly scarred.

• Arnold
- name of a pet, Ginny Weasley's purple Pygmy Puff.
Chapter 07: The Slug Club
• Romilda Vane (Confirmed: included in the movie)

A Gryffindor student at Hogwarts, whose been a stalker of Harry Potter.


Romilda will be played by actress Anna Shaffer.

• Cormac McLaggen (Confirmed: included in the movie)


Another Gryffindor student, reserve as a Keeper on his house Quidditch team in his
seventh year.
Cormac McLaggen will be played by actor Freddie Stroma.

• Marcus Belby (Confirmed: included in the movie)

Marcus Belby was a Ravenclaw student at Hogwarts School, who was considered for
membership in the Slug Club in 1996.
Last year, the actor playing Belby, "Robert Knox", was stabbed to death outside of a
bar, while defending his younger brother.

• Damocles Belby (mentioned only)


Damocles was a potioneer who invented the Wolfsbane Potion.
Uncle of Marcus Belby.

• Tiberius (mentioned only)


Uncle of Cormac McLaggen, Tiberius worked at the Ministry of Magic. He was close
with the Minister for Magic, Rufus Scrimgeour
• Bertie Higgs (mentioned only)
Bertie Higgs was a friend of Tiberius and Rufus Scrimgeour. They would often hunt
Nogtails in Norfolk.

Chapter 08: Snape Victorious


• Proudfoot
An Auror that was killed by either by Voldemort or on his orders. He was previously
stationed at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry along with Aurors Nymphadora
Tonks, Savage and John Dawlish during the 1996-1997 school year.

• Savage
a deceased Auror, probably killed by Death Eaters, who was stationed at Hogwarts with
Tonks in 1997.

Chapter 09: The Half-Blood Prince


• Libatius Borage
author of Advanced Potion-Making book.
• Hector Dagworth-Granger (mentioned only)
Horace Slughorn asked Hermione Granger if she was related to Dagworth-Granger
during their first Potion's lesson in 6th year. She replied that she did not believe so, since
she is Muggle-born.

• Abraxas Malfoy (mentioned only)


Grandfather of Draco Malfoy, Father of Lucius Malfoy.

Chapter 10: The House of Gaunt


• Humphrey Belcher (mentioned only)

• Bob Ogden (Appears in flashback(s)) (Confirmed: cut in the movie)


Ogden was employed by the Ministry of Magic's as Department of Magical Law
Enforcement, and he eventually rose to become head of the Magical Law Enforcement
Squad.

In the course of his duties, Ogden, "disguised" in a strange assortment of Muggle clothes,
and went to the Gaunt Shack, to interview one of its occupants; Morfin Gaunt, when the
Department had reason to believe, and later had confirmed information, that not only did
he perform magic in front of a Muggle (Tom Riddle Sr.) the previous night, but he
accosted that same Muggle and performed a jinx or hex and caused him to erupt in highly
painful hives.

Ogden died some time before 1996, of natural causes, but not before Albus Dumbledore,
during his investigations into Lord Voldemort's mysterious past, tracked him down and
persuaded Ogden to confide his recollections of his encounter with the Gaunt family to
him. These memories were placed in his Pensieve and later shown to Harry Potter. Ogden
remained unaware that his actions set the stage for the creation and rise of Voldemort
himself.

• Marvolo Gaunt (Appears in flashback(s)) (Confirmed: cut in the movie)


Marvolo Gaunt was a pure-blood wizard and descendant of Salazar Slytherin. He was
the grandfather of Tom Marvolo Riddle, later known as Lord Voldemort, though his
daughter Merope.

• Morfin Gaunt (Appears in flashback(s)) (Confirmed: cut in the movie)


Morfin Gaunt was a pure-blood wizard descended from Salazar Slytherin. He was the
son of Marvolo Gaunt, brother of Merope Gaunt, and uncle of Tom Marvolo Riddle a.k.a.
Voldemort.

• Merope Gaunt (Appears in flashback(s))


a pure-blood witch and the mother of Tom Marvolo Riddle, later known as Lord
Voldemort. She was a direct descendant of Salazar Slytherin and also a Parselmouth.
Physically and emotionally abused by her family, and as a result was timid and miserable
for most of her life, traumatized to the point of being unable to perform magic.

• Cecilia (Appears in flashback(s)) (Confirmed: cut in the movie)


Cecilia was a young, pretty Muggle woman who seems to have been romantically
involved with Tom Riddle Sr. prior to his marriage to Merope Gaunt. When Harry Potter
viewed the Pensieve showing the heritage of Lord Voldemort, Cecilia was riding on a
gray horse past the Gaunt Shack in Little Hangleton with Tom. The two sneered at the
ruined cottage, gossiped, and laughed when a terrified Bob Ogden ran from the house and
knocked into Tom's horse.

Presumably, Cecilia lost contact with the Riddle family after Tom married Merope,
though it is possible that she became part of his life again after he abandoned his wife and
returned to Little Hangleton.
Chapter 11: Hermione's Helping Hand

• Demelza Robins
Chaser for the Gryffindor Quidditch team.

• Jimmy Peakes
Chosen by Harry Potter to be one of the new Beaters for the 1996-1997 Gryffindor
Quidditch team.

• Ritchie Coote
Chosen by Harry Potter to be one of the new Beaters for the 1996-1997 Gryffindor
Quidditch team.

• Melinda Bobbin
Melinda Bobbin was a student at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry during
the 1990s. Horace Slughorn described her as "charming" and made her a member of the
Slug Club in 1996. Her family owned a large chain of apothecaries.

Chapter 12: Silver and Opals

Leanne (Confirmed: included in the movie)


Leanne is a friend of Katie Bell during her seventh year. While returning to Hogwarts
School of Witchcraft and Wizardry after a visit to Hogsmeade, she and Katie got in an
argument over a package that Katie had been given to take to the castle. The argument
caused Katie to accidentally touch the cursed opal necklace given to her by Madam
Rosmerta, who was under the Imperius Curse at the time. Leanne was very distraught
when Katie was put under the curse, trying to pull her down and crying. When they got
back to the castle she broke down when telling Professor McGonagall what happened and
was sent to Madam Pomfrey for calming down.

Leanne will be portrayed by actress Isabella Laughland.

Chapter 13: The Secret Riddle

• Caractacus Burke
Caractacus Burke is one of the original founders of Borgin and Burkes. Caractacus
was one of the few people Albus Dumbledore interviewed to find out more about
Voldemort's past. Dumbledore learned from Caractacus' memory that Merope Gaunt
came to him, and sold the locket Horcrux for ten Galleons, not realising it was a priceless
item. Caractacus was also the one who hired Tom Riddle after he had left Hogwarts to
research and collect items for him. It took him completely by surprise when Tom Riddle
disappeared.

• Mrs. Cole (Confirmed: included in the movie)

Mrs. Cole was the matron of the orphanage where Tom Marvolo Riddle lived before
attending Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.

• Martha (Confirmed: included in the movie)


Martha was a young girl who worked at the orphanage that Tom Marvolo Riddle stayed
at. At the time he was eleven, she was looking after children who had chicken-pox.

• Billy Stubbs (Confirmed: included in the movie)


Billy Stubbs was a Muggle boy who lived at the same orphanage as Tom Marvolo
Riddle. His rabbit was found hanging from the rafters the day after he had a fight with
Tom.

• Eric Whalley (Confirmed: included in the movie)


Eric Whalley was a Muggle orphan in the same orphanage as Tom Marvolo Riddle. At
the time Tom was eleven, Eric, Billy Stubbs, and Martha all had chicken-pox.

• Amy Benson (Confirmed: included in the movie)


Amy Benson was a resident in the orphanage that Tom Riddle resided in as a child. Tom
took her and Dennis Bishop to a cave near the spot where the orphanage kids were taken
on vacation. After the trip inside the cave, she and Dennis did not act the same and
seemed strange. Tom seemed to have done something so terrible inside the cave that the
two orphans were frightened into silence.

• Dennis Bishop (Confirmed: included in the movie)


Dennis Bishop, was a resident of the same orphanage as Tom Riddle. Amy Benson (also
a resident of the orphange) along with Dennis Bishop were taken to the cave (later home
to the Horcrux Locket), against their will, where Tom Riddle did something so terrible,
the two will not speak of it.

Chapter 14: Felix Felicis

• Muriel
Erderly Pure-blood witch, Great-aunt of Ron Weasley.
Aunt of Ron's Mother, Molly Weasley.

• Vaisey
played Chaser for the Slytherin Quidditch team.

• Urquhart
the Captain of the Slytherin Quidditch team.
Urquhart was new to the squad and he hadn't held any position on the team before.

• Harper
Reserve as a Seeker for the Slytherin Quidditch team, and played against Gryffindor
when Draco Malfoy pulled out of the squad.

Chapter 15:
The Unbreakable Vow

• Eldred Worple (Confirmed: included in the movie)


Former student of Horace Slughorn and the author of Blood Brothers: My Life Amongst
the Vampires. He is friends with the Vampire, Sanguini. At a Slug Club Christmas party in
1996, he tried to convince Harry Potter to let him write the young man's biography.

• Sanguini (Confirmed: included in the movie)

Sanguini is a vampire who attended a Slug Club Christmas party during Harry Potter's
sixth year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. He was the guest of Eldred
Worple.

Sanguini will be portrayed by British actor Charlie Bennison.

Chapter 16:
A Very Frosty Christmas
• Gawain Robards
Gawain Robards was an Auror under the command of Rufus Scrimgeour during the
Second Wizarding War. Following Cornelius Fudge's fall from power in 1996,
Scrimgeour replaced Cornelius Fudge as Minister for Magic, and as such Robards was
promoted to replace Scrimgeour as Head of the Auror Office.

Chapter 17: A Sluggish Memory

• Violet
Violet is a woman in a painting at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Her
portrait hangs in a small chamber off of the Great Hall. Because of this, she witnessed
when Harry Potter and the other Triwizard Tournament participants were given the
information about the tournament. She is friends with the Fat Lady and is known to go to
her painting as well as going other places to find things to gossip about. Violet and the
Fat Lady are known to drink too much on special occasions such as Christmas.

• Fergus
Fergus is Seamus Finnigan's cousin. He is known to annoy Seamus by apparating. His
parentage is unknown, however it has been suggested that he is on his cousin's mother's
side, as Seamus's father is a Muggle.

• Galatea Merrythought
Galatea Merrythought is a former Hogwarts professor of Defence Against the Dark
Arts. She retired at some point during Tom Marvolo Riddle's last year as a student at the
school, which was also during Professor Slughorn's previous term as Hogwarts Potions
master.

Chapter 18: Birthday Surprises


• Wilkie Twycross
Wilkie Twycross is an employee of the Ministry of Magic who teaches Apparition at
Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry to students who are age seventeen or
approaching age seventeen and wish to obtain a licence to Apparate.

Chapter 19: Elf Tails


• Cadwallader (Confirmed: cut in the movie)
Hufflepuff student who became a Chaser for the Quidditch Gryffindor Vs. Hufflepuff
match.

Chapter 20:
Lord Voldemort's Request
• Hokey (Confirmed: cut in the movie)
Hokey was a house-elf that belonged to Hepzibah Smith.

• Hepzibah Smith
Hepzibah Smith was a very old and very rich witch who collected magical antiques.
Two of her most prized possessions were a cup belonging to Helga Hufflepuff and a
locket belonging to Salazar Slytherin. She was also related to Helga Hufflepuff, one of
the founders of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.

Chapter 21:
The Unknowable Room

• Octavius Pepper
Octavius Pepper was a wizard who was reported to have disappeared in 1997 by the
Daily Prophet. His disappearance was believed to be connected to the Death Eaters.

Chapter 22: After the Burial

• Montgomery sisters
The Montgomery sisters were students who were attending Hogwarts School of
Witchcraft and Wizardry in 1997. Their five-year old brother was bitten by Fenrir
Greyback when their mother refused to help the Death Eaters. Their brother died at St.
Mungo's Hospital for Magical Maladies and Injuries.

• Odo the Hero


Odo is a relatively unknown character, but he has been mentioned in songs twice. The
first time was in 1996, Hagrid and Professor Slughorn were drunk right after Aragog's
funeral and it was about him dying. The second was at Fleur and Bill Weasley's wedding
where Hagrid, Charlie Weasley, and a "squat wizard in a purple porkpie hat" were singing
"Odo the Hero". Odo could have possibly been a friend of Hagrid's since Hagrid was
around in both situations or it could just a drinking song of sorts.

Chapter 23: Horcruxes


No new characters are introduced in this chapter.

Chapter 24: Sectumsempra


• Bertram Aubrey (Mentioned only)
Bertram Aubrey was a student at Hogwarts in the 1970s. He once was hexed by James
Potter and Sirius Black which caused his head to grow twice its size.

Chapter 25: The Seer Overheard


No new characters are introduced in this chapter.
Note: Professor Trelawney will not appear in the upcoming movie, because the actress
who prortrayed the role in the previous films, Emma Thompson declared that Nanny
McPhee is more important.

Chapter 26: The Cave


No new characters are introduced in this chapter.

Chapter 27:
The Lightning Struck Tower
No new characters are introduced in this chapter.

Chapter 28: Flight of the Prince


No new characters are introduced in this chapter.

Chapter 29: Phoenix Lament


• Gibbon (Confirmed: cut in the movie)
Gibbon was a Death Eater, who set the Dark Mark above the Astronomy Tower at
Hogwarts in the Battle of Hogwarts. He died shortly afterwards, when a stray killing
curse cast by Thorfinn Rowle that missed Remus Lupin, struck him in the chest.
Chapter 30: The White Tomb
• Rosalind Antigone Bungs (Mentioned only)
Rosalind Antigone Bungs was a witch. She was one of the names that Hermione
Granger found while researching who could possibly be R.A.B.

• Rupert Brookstanton (Mentioned only)


Rupert "Axebanger" Brookstanton was a wizard. He was one of the individuals that
Hermione Granger considered could be the mysterious R.A.B.
