How do Eroded Materials Move From Place to Place?

Sediment is washed off of the land into rivers, streams, lakes and oceans. This is called erosion. When erosion occurs, the sediment sometimes clogs up important waterways. The sediment then needs to be dredged, or dug out so that the water can flow freely. Dredging costs the U.S. government more than $125,000,000 a year!
MA.A.3.2.2

Erosion: Sinkholes
Most of the rock below the surface of Floridas land is limestone. Limestone is a rock that can be dissolved by ground water seeping through it. As the rock dissolves, spaces and caves develop underground. When the underground spaces just get too big, the land above them collapses. Sinkholes can be small, or they can be very big. Sometimes sinkholes occur under a road or under a house! The most damage from sinkholes happens in Florida, Texas, Alabama, Missouri, Kentucky, Tennessee, and Pennsylvania.
Sinkhole information and picture are from USGS, Water Science for Schools. MA.E.1.2.3
