CHAPTER 1 I. Introduction Fire damages properties, causes injuries to humans and animals, and even take lives.

If not properly handled, these consequences will positively happen. To avoid these circumstances, fire escapes or evacuation plans are implemented. Last March 18, 1996, more than 150 people were killed in the Ozone Disco in Quezon City, Philippines. The investigation revealed that the fire started from a spark in the wirings of the said club. Although the venue is small enough and seems easy to evacuate in less number of steps, the people were trapped inside because there was no fire exit. The disco owners have been sued for their negligence on this matter. There were 75 people killed in the Manor Hotel Tragedy last August 18, 2001, also in Quezon City, Philippines. According to the Philippine National Police, this is the 2nd on their list of worst tragedies that besieged the nation, after the Ozone Disco Tragedy. The lack of fire alarm is said to cause these deaths. Many of the deaths could have been prevented, with proper fire safety systems. Together with these, occupants of the building must be educated of the fire evacuation plan of the building. Even the best of the best fire safety plans will do no good unless people have knowledge of it. By means of this proposal, it is intended by the researchers to alleviate the problem in fire, concentrating on commercial buildings and facilities. This would provide the occupants a building a fire evacuation plan without the need of manual work.

II.

Background of the Study Under the Republic Act 9514 Fire Code of the Philippines, Rule 10, Chapter 2,

Division 2 General Requirements of Fire Safety in Buildings, Structures and Facilities states that All occupants or lessees of buildings, structures or facilities shall organize themselves and develop and implement fire safety programs to include among others, fire prevention in the premises, notification of the BFP (Bureau of Fire Protection) on the existence of a fire, evacuation of persons and initial firefighting. The building owner shall take the initiative of formulating the fire safety program for his building and of organizing the occupants to implement the programs. In line with this law, many fire safety programs and systems have been implemented. Some of these are namely: fire alarms, sprinkler systems, etc. In cases of fire, it is an instinct to everybody to save their own selves. There are instances that no one will consider risking their life and be the first to call the fire department to report the disaster. All may be in panic which may cause stampede and further damages. People getting trapped inside a building on fire may also cause death. No fire exit or lacks of awareness where the fire exits are located are some reasons of this. The researchers conduct this proposal with goals to prevent these troubles during fire.

III.

Objectives of the Study General Objectives: To develop an automated fire evacuation system for buildings, structures, and facilities. Specific Objectives: 1. To provide a simple indication of the safest fire exit route possible. 2. To inform authorities of the specific location of the fire. 3. To integrate these methods to form a system that will provide an easy and fast egress to people inside a building on fire.

IV.

Significance of the Study This proposal of an automated fire evacuation system will be beneficial to the

building owner and personnel, all of the people within the building, fire fighters and the society as well. To the owner and personnel of the building, prevention of further fire damage especially to human beings is a must. With the use of this system, evacuation of people inside the building will be more manageable. To the people within the building, own survival is their main priority. This system will provide them an automatic and safe egress. To the fire fighters, it will be of help to them to easily access the specific location of the fire for its immediate termination. The study of this system may also be a contribution to the advancement of the societys technology in Fire Evacuation. V. Scope and Limitations of the Study

This topic concerns an automated fire evacuation system that includes the following features: 1. Smoke detector 2. Emergency notification-sending to fire department. Via Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM), a

3. Annunciation of the emergency to the occupants of the building. There will be an announcement of the emergency for the occupants of the building to easily understand the warning. Also, the exact location of the fire will be included in the announcement. 4. Illumination of route which leads to the safest fire exit Emergency passageway lighting will be installed to the possible ways that will lead to the fire exits, including the stairs. With the use of the smoke detector, areas within the building that are affected by the smoke or fire will be known. Therefore, the paths on those areas would not be lit. The last four (3) features will operate all at the same time once the fire alarm has been triggered. The proposal of this system will only discuss the concepts of the features mentioned above. It will also tackle how it will work together as a system. The researchers will not include the following: Other required emergency elements Other emergency lighting system Sprinkler system and control valves

As seen on the given figure, fire and smoke are on the input stage of the system. The two has to be present to activate the system. The sensors are responsible to detect the presence of the inputs. Once it does, the annunciation system will work together

with the lighting system. Annunciation system includes the emergency notificationsending of the exact location of the fire to the fire department and the announcement of fire emergency to the occupants of the building. The lighting system is the illumination of route to the safest fire exit.
