Hello, I am an LLB student currently living in the US, entering my second year in the program. I study completely independent of an institution and without tutoring. Since my entry into the program, I have been very vocal and active, a fact to which Professor Hamilton can attest, from my many suggestions and correspondence with her in the past year. Although you state in the packet that only those from the UK need apply, the majority of students within the program are from outside the UK. Because of this, I think it is only just and pragmatic to have a non-UK based student representative to serve as a advocate for non-UK students. If there is any possibility to select a member from outside the UK (either to come in person or take part in the meetings via Skype / online), I am very eager to fill the position and have a voice in the program. I see great room for improvement to the program, and think that with some slight changes it can become much more successful, especially considering the dismal passage rates in the first year. In my opinion, the foremost issues to be addressed are the Universities approach to examination preparation for students studying independent of a learning institution, and maximizing the enormous potential of the VLE. As can be seen from my records and correspondence with Professor Hamilton (if they are available to you - if not, it will be worth your while inquiring about them) I am quite sure I will be able to offer a fresh and needed perspective which can greatly improve our program. Secondly, please accept our apologies for the delay of this response. I have recently started working for the University of London Union (ULU) and specifically with the University of London International Programmes as the Student Engagement Manager. This means my job is to directly engage with the student body and ensure mechanisms exist whereby the student voice is heard at the heart of the decisionmaking process. As a result, I have just taken over the remit of managing the student membership appointments. Whilst I agree that the current situation of only UK-based students being eligible for student membership of International Academy governance arrangements isn't the ideal situation, this is something which is under regular review. A few years ago saw me being elected President of the University of the London Union, and I have being working closely with the International Programmes ever since. A number of improvements have been made pertaining to the student voice in that time, and my new position will ensure we can further build on that. Whilst it is unfortunate we are unable to process your application this time round, you are clearly a very active student and someone I would wish to engage with further. As part of my ongoing consultation with students on a number of iniatives we are hoping to roll out in the coming months, I am creating a consultative list of students who I will be in regular communication with. Would you like to volunteer your time to enhance the student learning experience?
Two student membership vacancies have arisen on the International Academys Undergraduate Laws Subject Committee (ULSC). The ULSC is seeking to appoint two student members from November 2011 to August 2012. The ULSC is a sub-committee of the University of London International Academy Academic Committee (ULIAAC) and its principle activity is to develop the academic policy and direction of the Undergraduate Laws programme. It also considers matters relating to Undergraduate Laws provision, including the development, management and review of programmes, strategies for learning and teaching, the curriculum and regulations. As a student member the types of activities you will be involved in are: reading documents, extracting relevant information from papers, attending committee meetings, advising on enhancing practice that impacts on the quality of the student learning experience, and contributing to discussion, debate and report writing. Its a great opportunity to enhance your CV, develop your personal and professional skills and participate in the governance structure of a prestigious University. You must be registered on an International Programme throughout the length of the appointment and be registered on the LLB (rather than the Diploma in Law) and have progressed to the second year of study or beyond on whichever pathway you are registered on. ( Please note: If you already hold a student membership position on an International Academy committee, you are not eligible to apply until your current term has been completed. ) 2. You should be available to attend at least three committee meetings per academic year. The meetings during the 2011 2012 academic year are expected to take place on: Wednesday 30 November, 14 March, and 13 June. 3. You must be based in the UK in order to be able to attend meetings in London. ( Although reasonable travelling expenses will be reimbursed, it is not currently possible to fund travel from outside the UK. ) Length and duration of appointment The length of appointment as a student member of the ULSC is normally one full academic year, although this may be extended to two years if your registration is still valid for another year. The appointment runs from November 2011 to August 2012. The skills and attributes required for the role are an enthusiasm for enhancing the quality of the student experience; a confident, diplomatic and professional approach; appropriate interpersonal skills and verbal and written communication skills; time commitment to the role. Application and selection process If you wish to apply and meet the eligibility criteria identified above, you will be required to produce a personal statement of no more than 300 words (equivalent to one side of A4) indicating your interest in the role, and demonstrating how you satisfy the skills and attributes identified. You must submit your application using the application form, and no references are required. Applications will be assessed by a small Panel convened for this purpose and all applicants will be notified of the outcome within 3 weeks of the application closing date. Why are we seeking a student representative for the Undergraduate Laws Committee?
The International Programmes Undergraduate Laws Programme is currently seeking to appoint two Student Representatives to sit on the Undergraduate Laws Committee. This committee is the primary decision-making body for the programme and forms, steers and endorses policy and initiatives in respect of Undergraduate Laws programmes. The Undergraduate Laws Committee comprises senior academic staff drawn from the six Law Schools of the University, including the Heads of each Law School, Subject Co-ordinators and Chairs of the Board of Examiners, as well as the Director and Assistant Directors of the Undergraduate Laws Programme. The work of the programme is supported by three sub-Committees responsible for considering specific themes and functions for the Undergraduate Laws Programme:

Teaching and Learning Institutions Examinations

The purpose of the Student Representative is to provide a voice for students to help inform the decision-making of the Undergraduate Laws Committee. Given the geographical dispersal of undergraduate laws students worldwide, it would be impractical and impossible for the Student Representative to take on board the feedback of the 19,000 plus laws students. However, the student representative is intended to act as a vital link between the Undergraduate Laws Committee and the student body as a whole, acting as a channel for the two way communication of feedback. It is anticipated that technical support will be provided through the Laws Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) to assist the student representative in gathering feedback from students to report to the Undergraduate Laws Committee and in turn to communicate feedback and decisions back to students. Whilst initial plans focus on the appointment of a student representative for the Undergraduate Laws Committee, in the future the plan is to establish a student forum or similar network comprising a group of students representing either specific LLB pathways, Year of study and/or regions of the world. It is envisaged that such a forum would meet virtually through a dedicated discussion forum on the Laws VLE and would provide a vital link between the Undergraduate Laws Committee student representative and the International Programmes laws student body as a whole. Length of appointment The length of appointment as a student representative on the Undergraduate Laws Committee is likely to be one full academic year, although this may be extended to two years in the first year of operating the student representative scheme.

Eligibility criteria
In addition to the skills and attributes detailed in the application pack, the student representative will need to:

be based in the United Kingdom. The student representative will need to be available to attend the meetings of the Undergraduate Laws Committee (for information, future meetings of the Undergraduate Laws Committee are: Wednesday 30 November, 14 March, and 13 June). Whilst the University will reimburse reasonable travel expenses associated with attending the meetings in the UK, it is not possible to fund travel from outside the UK; be registered on the LLB (rather than the Diploma in Law) and have progressed to the second year of study or beyond of whichever pathway they are registered on.

Nomination and selection process


Candidates who meet the eligibility criteria identified will be required to complete the application form , including a statement of not more than 300 words (equivalent to a side of A4) indicating their interest in the role, and demonstrating how they satisfy the skills and attributes identified. No references are required. The deadline for receipt of nominations is 5pm on Monday 10 October 2011. All submissions must be sent via email to the International Programmes Quality Team at studentmembership@london.ac.uk as detailed in the application pack. Nominations will be assessed by a small Panel convened for this purpose.
