LUBRICATION

The engine is l u b r i c a t e d by oil mixed with the fuel. Recommended fuel/oil ratio is 24:1 for models with SACHS engines or 20:1 for models with KOHLER engines. Use a good grade of Regular Gasoline and ARIENS SUPER 2-Cycle Engine Oil. Mix fuel and oil thoroughly using a separate container before pouring the mixture into fuel tank. The enclosed chain case should be lubricated weekly with Ariens Premium Moly-Lith Grease. Remove chain case cover and add about one tablespoon of grease using a wide knife. With cover removed, lubricate upper bearing through fitting using a pressure gun. Do not over-lubricate. Pressure fittings are located on ski legs, front drive axle, rear idler axle and bogie wheels. Lubricate sparingly with pressure gun and low tempera24

ture grease (Ariens Premium Molylithium). Wipe off excess grease to protect track and sprockets. Apply light engine oil to ski mounting bolts, tie rod ends, brake & throttle cables and handle bar as required for smooth operation. Refer to Fig. 1 for lubrication chart.
ADJUSTMENT

measured midway between sprockets with cover removed. Adjust by loos-* ening the nuts on b e a r i n g housing bolts (AFig. 2) and the two locknuts on adjusting rod (B). Rock bearing housing clockwise to tighten chain or counter-clockwise to loosen chain. Realign drive belt and check brake adjustment after drive chain has been adjusted.

STEERING SKIS. S t e e r i n g skis should be parallel with each other and with vehicle frame when handle bar is in normal straight driving position. Tie rods are of equal length and tie rod ends are equipped with right hand and left hand threads. Adjustment is made by loosening the lock nuts and turning center section. Adjust each tie rod an equal amount. DRIVE CHAIN. The enclosed drive chain should have V^-VA inch slack

BRAKE. The shoe type b r a k e should just clear friction surface of driven sheave when brake lever is released, but should fully apply before lever contacts handle bar grip. Adjustment can be made at the two nuts which secure brake cable to actuating arm. DRIVE BELT. The torque converter drive belt must be correctly aligned for proper operation and long life. Alignment must be checked whenever chain tension is adjusted, engine removed, or torque converter parts renewed. To check drive belt adjustment, remove belt guard and lay a straightedge across i n n e r flange of drive sheave. Measure clearance to nearest point of driven sheave rim, front and rear, as shown at (A & BFig. 3). Distance should be equal and measure % inch. Adjust by lengthening or shortening adjusting rod, using the two nuts (C). TRACK, With r e a r of machine raised until track is clear of ground, top of track should sag %-l inch midFiq. 3To eheck drive belt alignment, lay a straight edge across inner rim of drive sheave and measure the distance (A & B) to driven sheave. (A & B) shouid be equal and measure Vi inch. Aiign by repositioning brace nuts (CK

way between drive and idler sprockets. To adjust track tension, loosen pivot bolt nuts (1Fig. 4) a slight amount and turn adjustment bolts (2) equally until track tension is correct. NOTE: Whenever track tension has been adjusted, alignment MUST be checked as outlined in TRACK SERVICE Section of this manual.
OVERHAUL

Refer to the appropriate paragraphs in the GENERAL SERVICE Sections of this manual for overhaul procedures of vehicle components. On 1969 models, brake cable ends are looped and secured with clips (1Fig. 5), and cable attaches to actuating arm by an eyebolt (2). Some 1970 models have a formed bar-end at lever end of cable and the eyebolt at actuating arm. Late models have a b a r - e n d (4) at hand l e v e r and threaded end (5) at actuating arm. Upper drive sprocket is available in optional sizes from 13 to 20 teeth, and is interchangeable for all models.

Fig. 2To adiust drive chain, loosen the nuts on three bearing housing bolts (A) and broce anchor (B ; then turn bearing housing untii correct chain tension is obtained.

Fig. 4To adjust track tension, loosen the two pivot bolt nuts (1) and tum adfusting screws (2) until top of track sags V2-I inch with rear of machine raised. Refer to text.
