thoroughfare: the Bloomingdale trail converts a former rail line into a 2.7 mile trail system traveling throughout the norther portion of chicago connecting the surrounding neighborhoods to the downtown. access: the access ramp, the primary program for the park, accomodates emergency vehicles, pedestrians, ada accessibility and bicycles. site program: the program transforms a vacant piece of land into a community space. people: withing a mile of the site, demographics of people under 19 is 65%. the program takes youth into account by providing places for teens to hang out and places for children to play while attended by adults.

food: multiple specied sites are provided for food carts and vendors to attract a variety of users. plants: a tropicalesque planting scheme, designed to juxtapose the chicago surroundings, gives the feeling of escape. Views: the at topography of chicago offers unique view opportunities with little elevation gain. the hill on the overpass increases the view points of downtown and the surrounding chicago city-scape.

oVerlook summer field school: a 4-week eld school immersing students in the vernacular landscape of the pocono plateau region. weekends were spent visiting rms and key landscapes of: washington d.c., philadelphia & new York. client: fuller center for productive landscapes client goals: sustainable economic site plan supporting local organic agriculture tools: illustrator photoshop site challenges: outside of central circulation corridors historic site preservation solution: an on-site research and incubator farm creates a sustainable economic model, while maintaining historic integrity.
Market days are Saturday & Sunday. The community is invited to participate in the market. Buyer Program customers receive discounts on food and can participate in u-picks for specific products. Value-added products such as sausage, jerky, specialized wine vinegars & medicinals developed from on-site grapes & herbs. 2 - 3 Head farmers guide the crops, stock, market and incubator farm. They lease the land from the Fullers.

Demonstration & Herb Garden

The demonstration garden illustrates the integration of edible and ornamental landscape. Herbs have a strong presence and are harvested for sale and production in valueadded products. The demonstration garden surrounds the barn.

Farm Interns & the Incubator Farm

Farm interns sign 1-3 year contracts. Their work week consists of 25 hours on the farm and 6 hours at the market. Extra time is spent on 1-2 acres given to grow their own products and learning the business of a small farm. They are given room and a percentage of profits.

client: lane county farmers client goals: a Year-round market site 100 tent spaces multi-functional space tools: autocad site challenges: on-site stormwater management materiality details preserving historic trees low-maintenance planting plan solution: the design creates a multi-functional space with room for over 100 tent spaces, 50 of the spaces are under cover. a new line of trees mimics the historic trees, enveloping the site. the ground material guides the visitor through the site, while connecting the surrounding park blocks.
