Lesson __1___ of __1___ Written by: Andrew Smith

COMMON CORE STANDARD

Grade 5 Strand 6: Earth and Space Science Concept 2: Earths Process and Systems PO 1. Describe how the Moons appearance changes during a four-week lunar cycle.

OBJECTIVE
SWBAT identify and label the Moons four week lunar cycle

OBJECTIVE
Written in student-friendly terms to post
Topic: Moons Four Week Lunar Cycle Do: Identify the Moon Phases by illustrating the phasing and their transitions with proper labels. Level of thinking: (Blooms)

VOCABULARY Must include up to six key terms or concepts with definitions

Rotation Act or process of turning around a center or an axis Revolution Orbital motion about a point, especially as distinguished from axial rotation. Waning Moon phase in which the Moon transitions from New to Full Waxing Moon phase in which the Moon transition from Full to New New Moon When the side of the Moon facing Earth is in the direction of the Sun and not visable on Earth. Full Moon When the side of the Moon facing Earth is fulling visable

INTRODUCTION

Tt will ask the students if they ever looked at the Moon and wondered Why is only half it showing? Or why on some days its not there at all?

CONTENT TEACHER ACTIONS

Using the Interactive Lunar Activity found here: http://highered.mcgrawhill.com/olcweb/cgi/pluginpop.cgi? it=swf::800::600::/sites/dl/free/0072482621/ 78778/Lunar_Nav.swf::Lunar%20Phases %20Interactive Tt will begin demonstrating how the Moon revolves around the Earth. Using the table Tt will pick the current date and time of the lesson. Tt will ask the students what they believe will be the moon phase present tonight

STUDENT ACTIONS
Using Cornell Notes format the Ss will identify key vocabulary terms used such as rotation and revolution.

Ss will make an educated guess on what they feel will be the proper moon phase. The students will label that moon phase correctly. Updated 4/4/12

MPS CTE: LESSON PLAN

Using the table again the Tt will pick a date two weeks from today and have the students determine what phase the Moon will be in. Tt will show Ss how the Moon transitions from the Full to New Moon cycles and give the proper identification of such Tt will have Ss go to link and record data on moon cycles for the new three months.

The Ss will use information gathered to identify the phase of the moon two weeks from today. Ss will follow along with Tt as the phases are demonstrated through the interactive web page. Ss will record data of moon cycles in Cornell notebooks on the phases of the moon.

CLOSURE
The assignment will take place back in the normal classroom. The Ss will draw and label the phases of the Moon. Mastery of this assessment requires the students to have 8 separate drawings to include the New and Full Moon as well as 3 transitioning drawings of Waxing and Waning phases.
