Vessel owner agrees to pay for damages to coral reef

TACLOBAN CITYe owner of a commercial vessel that hit a coral reef o the waters of Maripipi Island in Biliran province has agreed to indemnify for damages it cause due to the incident.
e company, Wisdom Marine Lines, has agreed to pay the local government unit of Maripipi in the amount of P917,000, says local operations chief Ritchie Pea or. Of the amount, P500,000 would be used to rehabilitate the coral reefs that were damaged due to the incident, he added. e company, as represented by one June Racuela and the municipal government of Maripipi as represented by its mayor, Uldarico Macorol, made the settlement agreement before the Provincial Prosecutors O ce based in Naval town, Biliran, last Tuesday a ernoon. ey agreed to pay the local government unit, in check, this Friday or by Tuesday next week, Peaor said in a phone interview. RSOG nabs cop wanted for slay

CAMP KANGLEON, Palo, Leyte - e Regional Special Operations Group (RSOG) of Police Regional O ce 8 (PRO8) arrested a police o cer tagged as a suspect in a shooting incident in Lapaz town in Leyte last year in a manhunt operation conducted recently. PRO8 director PCSupt. Elmer Ragadio Soria said that suspect SPOI Emmanuel Songahid, formerly assigned with the Regional Headquarters Support Group, and a resident of Burauen, Leyte, will now have the opportunity to defend himself and prove his innocence in the proper forum. Songahid is facing murder charges in the sala of Judge Buenaventura Pajaron of Regional Trial Court Branch 10 in Abuyog, also in Leyte for the alleged shooting of one Solomon Rapada. Rapada, according to police record, was one of the two men whom Songahid tried to arrest for allegedly smoking marijuana sticks way back April 28, 2012 in Brgy. Sta. Ana, Lapaz, Leyte. Judge Pajaron issued an arrest warrant for the suspects arrest in November 21 last year and did not recommend any bail bond for Songahids temporary liberty. Songahid was nabbed by RSOG led by PSInsp. Dinvir Revita and Burauen police along Sto. Nio Street in Burauen town while with his friends. e policeman-suspect did not resist arrest and was brought to Burauen police station for proper disposition. PALO, Leyte - If the problem on lack of teachers is bothering, shortage of dentist to check oral health needs of public school learners is more alarming. e Department of Education disclosed that Eastern Visayas has only 37 school dentists to attend to needs of projected 1,117,737 enrollees in kindergarten, elementary, and secondary level this school year. For dental services the ratio should be one dentist for every 18,000 learners but in the region, a dentist has to check the oral health of 30,209 enrollees every school year, said Renelda Salar, DepEds supervising nutritionist. e dentists are also tasked to check oral health status of public school teachers and non-teaching personnel. Dental carries is consistently the leading ailment among elementary school pupils in Eastern Visayas with 17% of students have tooth problem. Records of the DepEd regional health and nutrition unit shows that 118,909 pupils got this problem representing 17% of the 707,367 Grades 1 to 6 kids assessed. Salar said that one of the most common reasons, aside from poverty, why some pupils are absent in classes is because of su ering tooth aches. ere are some students who nished elementary and never get a chance to meet a

The plunging plight of education

hen a teacher has an unfortunate encounter with a student who doesnt have the tiniest grasp of even the rudiments of simple English construction, he knows that kid is in trouble. That seems to be the appalling plight of the tots of this generation. Admittedly, education goes beyond the slight if not insignificant ability to let out and express thoughts, verbal or written, in English or otherwise, but coherently. Yet the quest for education sought through schooling is a means to an end job generation. Surely, one who is able to write and speak basic English has far greater edge than one who bungles at even how to pronounce a simple English word correctly insofar as seeking employment is concerned. Like it or not, one who is able to express himself in the second official language impresses greater appeal than one who cannot. It is true too that education is in no way akin to schooling even as Mark Twain vouched not to allow his schooling interfere with his educa-

tion. But while not similar, one is the implement of the other in that one way to get education is through schooling. And schooling as one implement of education has suffered a great deal in these parts. That really should not have been the trend what with the advancements in technology and the convenience and vastness offered by the internet where one can easily feed himself with vast information with one mere click of the mouse. Unfortunately, while technology has become more and more sophisticated, our tots have become dumber and dumber. Maybe the root cause of this plunging decline is not the innovation in technology so much as the quality of elementary and secondary education offered by our schools. The problem is that while teachers have the necessary capability to impart knowledge, they lack the how part of the equation. Indeed, it is one thing to possess knowledge, it is another to impart it, and effectively.

Not an overkill
Just blaming Leyte Metropolitan Water District for its still not perfect or not highly reliable water service. Criticisms kept coming. No, it wasnt an overkill. With every Taclobanon denizen who fully understands what freedom of information and public service, or basic service, Tacloban community can always exercise its right to air its grievance, its discontent. Its normal. But itd be abnormal if its continued grievances continue to be simply ignored. And itd be highly abnormal if, despite the continuing or recurring problem with LMWDs still not-100-per-cent reliably safe water, Taclobanons will just keep silent. Until this writing, my Ine or Ini? Which one is right? This Waray word means ito in Tagalog, kini in Cebuano este in Spanish and this in English. Its correct form cannot be established ,neither agreed on, yet. There are many Waray terms that suffer this fate. Of course, efforts had long been there, to purify Waray language (or dialect, which is an anathema to many Waray writers and Waray grammarians) and many of its terms, either in spelling, accentuation, or in syllabication. Only those who expressly agree as members in a specific group agree and insist on that which to them is correct and right. Other

out into the world of work, literature being largely based on fantasy and imagination affords them with nothing but glimpses of abstract ideas. For this they earn some kind of right to indeed question literatures relevance to this material world. But educators and experts in the academe have another ideastudents must take up at least one literature subject, knowing its tremendous importance in our individual and collective lives. Students, in their youthful perceptions, may not realize this, but adults know better, given their accumulated wisdom and experiences. graduate, but for more valid reasons. It is a must, for instance, that youngsters should acquire and develop values and norms that they need to apply in dealing with people in society.
