Welding electrode for API5L- grade X-60 & X-65 04/10/2008 1:01 AM Wish to know , 1)To weld API-5L

grade X-60 & X-65 , can we use electrode E-7016-P1 , which is specified as alternate to E-8010-P1. Few electrode manufaturuer have indicated that it can be used up to X-65 grade. 2) Can we use E-7018 for this application? thanks.

E 7016 or E 7018 to be frankly speaking, is suggested, in the welding industry where there are jobs to be welded amongst unidentified metals. Or E 7016 GRADE is suggested many a times, to create a cushion or buffer layer for applying hard facing electrodes. I not knowing the exact chemistry for your suggested metal, this both grade should work on prima facie. It would be more nice if you could elaborate the major chemistry of your metals. Again, E 7016 or E 7018 type of electrodes are availables with several reputed companies, in conventional and maintenance arc electrodes. I would suggest you rather to go with maintenance where upfront cost might be higher than conventional but longitivity of the job or in other words the life of the application is more durably longer. Again, you'll need a specific power source for igniting E 7018 electrodes in conventional type [minimum of 80 OCV] which is not the case with maintenance types. Hope to know the chemistry of your metal THANKS & REGARDS RAJIV DAMANI __________________ ... ... ... addicted ... to WIN

Yes 7018 is loosely considered an all around rod with certain specific limiting factors not often observed. 7018 is helpful when using chromoly and or some combinations of dissimilar metals but is just plain overkill when and old coat hanger will do.

Also, E7018 must be used in uphill direction (not downhill) and this instruction can be also readable at box or from Electrode Datasheet obtained from supplier. A lot of details you have to know before applying the process such as volt, ampere, speed, ...etc., by reading the Electrode Datasheet. For that purpose (your question and my suggestions), the ASME code, Section IX, ask you to prepare a Welding Procedure Specifications, WPS's and a Procedure Qualification Record, PQR's to satisfy yourself that your procedure, filler metal, base metals, welding parameters, ... etc. are all combined to produce a sound weldment.

It is most importantly selected after identifying the welding technique that is Vertical Up Hill welding or Vertical Down Hill Welding. All electrodes are not suitable for VUH Welding and VDH Welding. Therefore a Contractor chooses welding techniques to a specific job first, then he select the electrodes. Simple answer to this question is yes you can weld X-60 or 65 with E-7016. But the point is how many joints in how big spread and what quality of weld one is looking for. If you want to match the tensile strength, yes all three electrodes (E-7016, E-7018 and E-8010 would match or produce stronger weld joint than the pipe, but all electrodes are not suitable for selected welding techniques. Therefore first determine whether you are welding cross-country pipeline, refinery joints or station terminals. Then you work out the progress per day according to the schedule, Then you select welding technique and then electrodes. Mind you all success is based on the Mechanical Test of the Weld Coupons in Procedure Qualification Test. When every thing has worked good, your selected electrodes are perfect. Mind you E-7016 electrode is extreemly low hydrogen electrodes and not recommended for VDH welding when you want to produce satisfactory weld. #8
