JULY / AUG 2013

I AM WOMAN
Awards were announced before a large crowd at a public reception for the I AM WOMAN art competition on Saturday June 1. Judge Susan Carlisle Bell was on hand to present the awards and offer comments on the winners. Wow, what a quality exhibit in a delightful space! I congratulate SASi for making this a truly regional showcase for diversity of media and stories of women said Ms. Bell. First Place went to Brenda Beard Bostian of Gastonia for her painting Mistress Mary Imagination. Ms. Bell commented The artist is intuitively responding to the language of color and the act of painting. There is a wonderful interplay of positive/negative space, lost/found edges, deliberate strokes/spontaneity. Second Place went to Todd Baxter of Tega Cay for his painting Purple Hat . Radiance of light and obvious brush work are combined with character to enliven this figure commented Ms. Bell. Third place went to Nancy Valrance of Lake Wylie for her painting/ collage Letters from the Front, 1945. Ms. Bell says the looseness of this watercolor echoes the faded memorabilia from a simpler time. The collaged letters strengthen the content and the choice of framing compliments the work itself. Merit Awards went to Doug Knotts, Jessica Gordon, Lucy Warlick and Elisa Beekman. Forty-Eight artists entered 105 pieces of artwork in the show. Artists were from both Carolinas as well. ~ Our Deepest Sympathy ~

Charter Member Bonnie H. Price died suddenly on May 6th, 2013. Until this past year, she was Chair of the Calendar Committee and had done a calendar page each year since 1986. Bonnie was talented in every medium of art from painting, to book making, drawing, and clay. Bonnie could never keep her pencil still and even doodled throughout our monthly Board meetings. The past several years she spent making fantastic clay sculptures. She was honored with a one woman show at SASI in September of 2012. Bonnie had completed her design for the 2014 Calendar and it will be printed posthumously and included in the TwentyNinth Edition.

~ NWS Exhibit ~
Hundreds of people from around the Carolinas came to see the National Watercolor exhibit at Southern Arts Society during April and May. SASI was featured on the PBS show North Carolina Weekend. We were thrilled to have so much exposure! SASI even sold one painting out of the exhibit. SASI would like to thank all of our volunteer Hosts during the show. You made the event possible. And a special Thanks to Bernice Chappell for heading up committee to oversee the NWS coming to Kings Mountain. We were very proud to show off our beautiful building and grounds to the public.

SASI Library
We are almost through cataloging the 775 books donated by Sharon Hoyle of Gastonia. Beth Caveny and volunteers have been working hard to put pockets and library cards in the back of the books, and write down the names of the book and author. A tedious process! Ben Hubbard has made a new bookcase to house some of the new books. You can still check out books while they are finishing up, just see the Host on duty.

~ A FRESH LOOK ~ COMING IN AUGUST

This will be the second year for our newest art exhibit and competition, A Fresh Look. We will accept artwork on Saturday July 27 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday July 28 from 1 to 4 p.m. All media of art, paintings, photography, sculpture, fiber and mixed media are welcome. All work must be able to hang or sit on a flat surface. We encourage you to use new materials, try a new medium or otherwise take a Fresh Look at your art. A full prospectus will be available online or at SASI. This is a judged show with prize money and ribbons. Judge to be announced.

PAINTERS GARDEN
SASI is very proud of our facilities. Part of that is the beautiful Painters Garden that surrounds our building. Master Gardner Cindy Hovis has transplanted numerous plantings in the past year and all have lived and flourished. Cindy could use your help in constantly weeding and watering plants as needed. If you have plants to share let her know too and we will plan a day for that in the fall. Cindy 704-914-6999.
