Budget update shows bumpy road ahead for CUSD

urrent Claremont Unified School District projections indicate the district will be $1.4 million below its state required 3 percent reserves by the end of the 2012-13 school year.
Though the district will stay above the state mandated requirement for the 2010-11 and 2011-12 academic years, CUSD will only have $239,254 out of a required $1,676,027 in reserves by 2012-13. The district is currently at 9.68 percent of total reserves. We are spending our reservesI need to emphasize that, said Assistant Superintendent of Business Services Lisa Shoemaker at Thursdays board meeting. There has been a lot of conversation about holding reserves. Were not holding reserves, were spending reserves. Were spending our savings account. The CUSD board approved a proposed 2010-11 budget on Thursday night that showed increased deficit spending over the next 3 years totaling approximately $5.3 million. The district has deficit spent by $1,566,642 this academic year. Within the budget are assumptions such as an increase in class size ratio for kindergarten through 3rd grade students to 30:1, furlough days, further reductions in staff, as well as other district cuts. Ms. Shoemaker said even with the assumptions, the district would still be deficit spending. She also added that some of the assumptions, such as class size increases, might not be implemented. While the district can show financial solvency over the next 2 years, it will need a conditional approval from COURIER photos/Steven Felshundneff the Los Angeles County Office of Education due to dip- Former school board member Sam Mowbray addresses members of the Claremont Faculty Association ping below 3 percent of its reserves for the 3rd year of during the public comment session on Thursday during the CUSD Board of Education meeting. New finalized city budget reflects tough economy

fter months of planning and number crunching, the city council approved a final budget for the next 2 fiscal years.
With decreasing revenue and increasing costs, the city has been forced to make difficult decisions in order to balance its budget. City staff positions have been cut and replaced with contractors. A wide array of city services have been trimmed and some programs will be eliminated altogether. This position were in with this budget is horrible, Mayor Pro Tem Sam Pedroza said. Its putting us in a really bad situation and trying to do best we can with what we have. Among the services affected by the budget cuts are tree trimming, litter removal at parks, median and right-

of-way landscaping, social services and community development. Several engineering and city planner positions were eliminated. In the Police Department, the last remaining captain position will remain vacant and a costly study to design a new police station will be postponed. The city will consider creating a position to undertake administrative tasks and grant applications for the police department. The citys Tiny Tots and Pre School Programs will no longer be staffed by city personnel. The programs could be eliminated altogether if a partner in the private sector cannot be found to operate them. Councilmember Peter Yao said the outlook for a fu-

ture economic turnaround is grim unless the city can establish new revenue generators. We dont have an awful lot of options, he said. Mr. Pedroza believes the citys best chances for an economic boom come from business development in south Claremont at the Pepper Tree Center and Claremont Promenade shopping center by the 10 Freeway. The city is planning to set up a committee to look at economic development options for Claremont over the next few years. Mayor Linda Elderkin said that despite all the cuts, she believes the budget leaves the core value of Claremont intact. In my own mind, I am comfortable that for 2 years, the core and the heart of Claremont is okay, Ms. Elderkin said. The city will maintain a 25 percent budget reserved Tony Krickl balance of about $4.94 million.

Marketing video showcases Claremont businesses

eventeen businesses in the Claremont Village now have a new way to attract customers.

The Claremont Chamber of Commerce and the Village Marketing Group teamed up to host the premiere of a new 6-minute video consisting of 5 to 30-second commercials for each of the 17 businesses. The video began with changing the Hollywood marquee to say Claremont, and was created by local video producer Jared Cicon on Tuesday at the Claremont 5 Laemmle Theatres. We can take credit for filming and editing the video but the stars are really the businesses, Mr. Cicon said to the business owners during Tuesday nights event. We need to have this seen so that all 17 business can get their due. Teaming up with your Village partner can bring more people to your business. If we work the video right, well all benefit. With the current state of the economy, Claremont businesses in the Village are searching for new ways to attract customers. Stamp Your Heart Out owner Joan Bunte believes the new commercials are a step in the right direction. When Maureen brought the idea to the Village Marketing Group, we just said lets do it, Ms. Bunte said. We were also able to offset some of the funds to make this more affordable for the businesses. According to Claremont Chamber of Commerce CEO Maureen Aldridge, the distribution of the commercial loop is vital to the success of the new endeavor. The whole idea is to get the videos into the hotels, on the Chamber website and it is important to put it on your own websites as well, Ms. Aldridge said. Mr. Cicon said the process took 2 months from his initial proposal to the projects completion. The footage for the video was shot in 5 days with a shooting schedule of 3 to 4 businesses per day. Village business owners gave the finished product positive feedback at the event. Aromatique owner Lori Paley was pleased with the presentation. I felt that it captured the essence of our businesses, she said. He [Mr. Cicon] made our staff feel so comfortable and even though he didnt know all the stores before, he still was able to capture the essence of them. Plans are currently in the works for a 2nd commercial loop including 17 more Village businesses. Mr. Cicon hopes the businesses use the commercials to further their networking potential. You can park a car and walk to all of these businesses in just minutes, he said. Imagine if youre at Aruffos and you see a Bert and Rockys commercial.

COURIER photo/Steven Felschundneff Claremont Chamber of Commerce CEO Maureen Aldridge thanks Mayor Pro Tem Sam Pedroza for attending a screening party on Tuesday at Laemmles Claremont 5 theater. The chamber held the party to unveil its new video Claremont Close up: The Stories of the Village which features a series of short spots promoting select businesses.

After dinner, you could go there for desert. These arent only commercials but a network to reach more customers. Tintura Color Salon owner Doris Rodriguez plans to incorporate a television into her shop in order to play the commercial loop. She is excited to see how the networking will improve business traffic in Claremont.

Im really excited that its going into the hotel, Ms. Rodriguez said. This is a great marketing tool for us and I liked Mr. Cicons presentation. Im excited to see what this will do for the city.

Life at a non profit organization

by Jan Wheatcroft

am a part of the Claremont Forum which is a not for profit organization located in the Packing House on First Street in Claremont Village West. We moved here a few years ago from the old COURIER building on College Avenue which closed its doors.
There we had lots of big rooms and lots of space. But we were rather isolated from public traffic and without visibility to people passing by. Now, although our rooms are smaller than before, people walk into the Packing House and discover us. We have two spaces, one large one which is our gallery space. Here, we have art shows, concerts, meetings, discussions and films. We also rent out the space throughout the year. Next door is The Thoreau Bookstore and it is also where the Prison Library Project (PLP) is located. This smaller space is the hub of all we do. What do we do and what is our focus? The Claremont Forum has two main missions. The first one is the Prison Library Project. We send books to prisoners. Men and women send us letters from all over the United States. We receive over 200 per week. These have to be read, sorted and responded to. We send them books as well as a ways and means letter which includes much needed information to incarcerated prisoners and to those ready to leave prison. Prisoners who write to us request all types of books but the most desired book of all is a paperback dictionary. So many are eager to learn or to pass their GED exams. We never have enough dictionaries to fulfill all the requests but we do our best. It is our desire that the books we send will continue to bring hope and intellectual stimulation to all of the men and women behind bars. All of the work behind the reading, selecting, wrapping, and sorting of books and letters is accom-

plished by a host of wonderful volunteers. Without them nothing would get done. They come from all corners of our community, from high schools and colleges, churches and temples, senior centers, as well as others looking for a way to give back to the community or to help people in need. Our second mission is to promote health and well being within our community. We are the sponsor of the Sunday Farmers and Artisans Market where we are able to have farmers offer their healthy, organic fresh produce and local artists show and sell their original art work. On Friday night at the Packing House, the Green Market promotes environmental awareness with exhibits. Throughout the week there are language classes, dance and discussion groups and a writers workshop as well as spiritual meetings. The Claremont Forum also hosts our now well known yearly shows such as the Gypsy Sisters Craft Fair and the Postmarked Exhibit which gathers art work from artists around the world. We have learned many things about organizing throughout the years. As I look back I realize all the changes and developments which have occurred and how this expansion has demanded changes from the

board of directors as to how the Forum is structured and the amount of work it all entails. Earlier on we kept the bookstore open when we could. Now there are four of us who keep the bookstore doors open every day from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. This too is done by volunteer labor. Doug, who is in charge of the PLP is a tireless worker who is deeply committed to getting as many books to prisoners as possible and is there 6 afternoons a week. Tony is our manager and as such is the glue that holds things together. Rachel maintains our website and meets the challenges of the computer world in which I can hardly function. Rick, Barbara and I are there weekly answering letters, shelving books, sharing information with the public about what we do and keeping the wheels oiled. We try to support and attend functions, go to board meetings and suffer through the agonies of meager funding, ideas to raise monies to send more books and pay our bills. I love the Claremont Forum and the part that I play in its organization. It centers me. I have met wonderful and generous people through this connection. Working in a non profit organization is fraught with struggles of balancing needs with funds. There are always more needs than funds. Needs shout out loudly, funds whisper as they slip in. Great bonds have been made over the years by those involved in making the Forum what it is at this time. For those wanting to know more about this wonderful organization, our website is www.claremontforum.org. All of our books come from generous donations and everyone is welcome to donate books at any time. For anyone living in a community who wants to enrich themselves as well as the place where they live, I recommend that they find some group that needs their participation and welcomes it.

Maintaining support for teachers in troubled times

by Marcie Gardner

ot surprisingly, my letter about our common misfortune generated feedback. I enjoy the debate, but I am disheartened that Mr. Harrison and Ms. Byers continue to make their points by distinguishing their situation from non-teacher workers.

Specifically, they both made assumptions about me, my job, and my salary which they claim makes their economic challenges intrinsically different from mine. The implications I read in Wednesdays letters are that: 1) I am a rich lawyer with a salary far in excess of any teacher; 2) since Im in the free market, I can just get clients to make more money in lean times; and 3) my employment does not demand funding items out of my own pocket. I may have missed further negative inferences. For instance, Ill admit Ive never heard the word churlish. But it didnt sound good. While I will not publicly disclose my annual salary, suffice it to say that I am a criminal defense attorney for adults and juveniles in a two-person law office. In

good times and bad, criminal defense attorneys do not command the legal fees Ms. Byers must have had in mind when she proclaimed that I reap great financial rewards in flush times. And putting salary aside, I do not have paid benefits, vacation, sick time or a pension. My paycheck comes after paying overhead, which includes rent, malpractice insurance, bar and association dues, legal resource materials, continuing education, travel costs, supplies, duplication costs, telephone charges, advertising and many other miscellaneous expenses (including self-employment tax!). I am not guaranteed a monthly income, and due to fierce competition for clients from other defense attorneys, I cannot simply find more clients. Since many of our clients themselves are struggling, they are not necessarily able to pay our fees. Despite this, I love my job. I get to help people during one of the toughest times of their lives, and I have flexibility to spend time with my kids. While many different legal careers are available to me, I made a choice based on a passion for my work and desire to spend more time with my family. I suspect many teachers made their career choices because they love working with

view point
children, love the schedule and enjoy their union-protected benefits. And, perhaps like me, they choose to stay in their careers because they also love their jobs, drawbacks and all. Our students are the richer for their choice. But a true comparison of our bottom lines would show Mr. Harrison and Ms. Byers that our financial positions are more equivalent than they imagine. Yet when they write about our positions being different based on incorrect assumptions, they underscore the point of my original letter: seeking community support to help ride the tide of this economic fiasco while claiming to be impacted by this fiasco inherently differently than the same community members is a touchy business. My letter was not intended as antiteacher or pro-furlough days. In fact, I expressed dislike for furlough days but

acknowledged that the idea may need to be discussed. At the same time, I expect our district to carefully examine its own bottom line. After recently confirming the legal fees and hourly rate the district has paid its attorney the past two years, I immediately called a board member to voice my opinion that it seems the district has paid an excessive amount of money for legal services. I offered to volunteer my time to help the board interview other firms who can provide the same quality legal work at a fraction of the cost. I look forward to continuing that discussion and working with the board. I will continue to support the teachers, schools, CEF and board through donations of time, money and materials whatever each party needs. I will continue to encourage others to do so as well. The teachers may just have an easier time of generating support if parents stop hearing a variation of the its worse on teachers theme.

Adair spoke her mind through the words of poetry

laremonts feisty, fabulous poet, the late Virginia Hamilton Adair, could have justifiably changed the spelling of her name to Adare. Because time and time again, in sassy and courageous and even troublemaking ways, she dared.
She dared to speak her mind. She dared to publish 3 volumes of poetry as an octogenarian while exposing her most intimate selfand even talk about fartingin her poems. She admitted being royally pissed off about going blind, but continued forth, undeterred. Ms. Adair dared to live big and love big, from girlhood to her death at 91. I am in love with at least two men, also the trumpet of Louis Armstrong, she wrote in 1936, poetry, scholarship, ritual, ice skating at 10 below zero, drinking Manhattans, dancing, Wisconsin lakes and woods, being in love with almost everything. Fellow poet Nancy Ware remarked on her longtime friend, She sort singes of the air with who she is. Even in the late stages of her life, there didnt seem to be any diminishing of spirit, of her vital and vivid personality. She was just remarkable. Ms. Adair (1913-2004) has been described as saucy, formidable, difficult and even gamy in her own words; and also generous, loving, accepting, inspiring. And without exception, her friends agree that she is absolutely

unforgettable. In a sense, you just cant lose Virginia, said Ms. Ware. Shes indelible. Friends of Ms. Adair have joyfully and emotionally prepared a tribute event in her honor, Remembering Virginia Adair, to be held at the Claremont Library at 2 p.m. tomorrow, Sunday, June 27, as part of the Friends of the Claremont Library poetry series. I love her. I miss her. This has been really hard to do. I find myself crying a lot, said Nancy Wing, longtime poet, friend and member of the events steering committee along with Ms. Ware, Ken Austin and Karen Greenbaum-Maya. She was, and is, terribly important to me, to many of us. Its an event of pleasure as well as remembrance and sharing of peoples memories and the poetry they love of hers, said poet Frances McConnel, co-chair of the steering committee with Lucia Galloway. I just loved her poetry. It always knocked me out.

Virginia Adair's poetry might never have been published were it not for Mr. Mezey who invited her to give a reading in 1982. He later was responsible for bringing her poems to publication.

rom a very early age, Ms. Adair floored people with her poetry, having absorbed poetic cadence even in infancy when her father read Homers Iliad to her in her crib. It was at this time that I got down to work, Ms. Adair once joked in an interview. Born in the Bronx as Mary Virginia Hamilton, she demonstrated her spirited nature by dropping the loathed Mary immediately when she left home at 16 for Mount Holyoke College. Quickly showing her poetic prowess, she won the schools prestigious poetry contest multiple times, a competition she later judged, filling the shoes of former judges Robert Frost and W.H. Auden, among other notables. During graduate work at Radcliffe College, she ogled a literal line-up of Harvard boys, noticing and being noticed by Douglass Adair, an aspiring scholar and professor, and a passionate love story began. To Ms. Adairs deep devastation and eternal mystification (I have never understood/I will never understand, she once wrote), in 1968 Mr. Adair killed himself in their bedroom while she was making dinner, a tragic event she explored in many poems. At Harvard danced into the great heart of Douglass/In the loveliest ball gown of pale rose lace. For thirty-six years in his arms I was dancing; But now my beloved has ended the dancing. The two had settled in Claremont in 1955, Ms. Adair having been published at this point in reputable literary publications such as Atlantic Monthly and New Republic. Here, she launched her 22-year teaching career at Cal Poly Pomona. Ms. Adair wrote poetry almost every day, sitting in her

trademark cross-legged pose and typing thousands of poems of great intensity, intimacy, rawness, and sometimes hilarity and raunchinesswhat Ms. Ware described as the whole aim and scope of the heart; all of the beautiful and painful and amazing times of her life. So often, her carefully crafted poemsfor she was a stickler, most of the time, for form and structurewere written for friends to celebrate their birthdays, anniversaries, other special days. All of us have poems from birthdays. I probably have 20, said Ms. Wing. Every occasion would elicit poetry from her, said friend and poet Marcyn Del Clements. It was just delightful. It was not until she was 83 that Ms. Adair published her first volume of poetry, Ants on the Melon, urged and aided by Pomona College professor, poet and friend, Robert Bob Mezey. She has worked for years in almost total obscurity, Mr. Mezey told the COURIER in 1995. Outside of Claremont, her name was hardly recognizedand this, of a poet of Virginias standing. But a certain degree of anonymity was purposeful, hesitant as she was to gain audience and fame, fearful of their corrupting influences. Yet with Mr. Mezeys encouragement and assistance, and his somewhat clandestine submittal of her poems to the New Yorker (where they were received with delight), and the securing of Random House to publish her first volume, Ants on the Melon, Ms. Adair entered the world of known poets in 1996 like a comet, it was once said. Two more volumes followed, Beliefs and Blasphemies and Living on Fire, the latter eliciting the re-

view, People will be quoting these poems twenty and thirty and fifty and 100 years fro nowthats how clear and memorable they are. When her last volume was published in 2000, Ms. Adair had been completely blind for 8 years. She continued to compose using her old Olympia typewriter, but was tortured by the loss of ability to revise a poem sometimes more than 100 times before finalizingwithout assistance: she called this devastating. It just got closer and closer and closer and closer to non-writing, she said in an interview at age 89. Ms. Wing recalled a time when Ms. Adairs blindness caused such anger she sat down (cross-legged, of course) right on the spot in public. She hated being blind. She was as mad as hell because she wanted to run and she couldnt run anymore, and she was pissed. Her displeasure was definitely expressed at times, Ms. Wing said. Ms. Wing and numerous other friends and fans will gather tomorrow to read her poems and bask in their cherished memories of this spunky, intense woman who touched their lives. She is a muse for the poetic fire that exists in our minds, said Ms. McConnel. In addition to those quoted in this article, others reading at the tribute will be B.H. Pete Fairchild, David Levering, Rosemary Adam and perhaps more. Honoring Ms. Adairs love of the recorder (although she was never very good at it, confessed Ms. Wing on her behalf) the Village Pipers quartet will play recorder music. Remembering Virginia Adair, at the Claremont Library tomorrow at 2 p.m., is free and open to the public.

William T. Richardson
On June 6, 2010, longtime Claremont resident William T. Richardson died at the age of 82. Bill Richardson was born in New Kensington, Pennsylvania in March 1928, the only child of Magdalena Rosansky Richardson and William V. Richardson. He spent his childhood in the family home built by his grandfather, Josef, and spent happy summers helping his grandparents on their small farm. After attending the local parochial school, St. Joseph, Mr. Richardson graduated from New Kensington High School, commonly known as Ken High, in 1946. With his firm belief in hard work and duty, he joined the Army 4 days after graduation and completed basic and tank crew training at Fort Knox. He was then quickly shipped out to join the Occupation Forces in Europe, and spent the next 3 years in Trieste, Italy where he served in Company B of the 6th Medium Tank Battalion as a tank crewman and as a military police officer. In Trieste, Mr. Richardson formed friendships that lasted the rest of his life. Following his honorable discharge from the Army in 1949, Mr. Richardson joined the inaugural class at Behrend College, Penn State, in Erie, earning a bachelors degree in industrial psychology. After college graduation, he joined the Air Force and, after completing flight training, he was deployed to Naha AFB, Okinawa with the 51 Wing, 25th Fighter/Interceptor group flying the F-

pleted his 22 years of military service as a member of the Air Force Reserves and enjoyed a successful career at Northrop Corp. For many years, the Richardson family lived in Claremont where they forged many deep and true friendships. Together, Mr. Richardson and his wife, Nita, raised 2 children, Mike and Laura. A devoted father and husband, his family considered him a good provider. Mr. Richardsons family also shared that he was loved for his skill as a listener, and he was a gifted storyteller. He was the central pillar of strength in our family, they expressed. He was humble, generous and a true friend to all. Mr. Richardsons passion was exploring the mysteries of science and the world around him. He was inspired by the beauty and majesty of the natural world and, most of all, he loved gazing into the heavens through a telescope, noted his family. He passed this excitement on to his children, grandchildren and many friends who often became swept up in his passion for learning. He exemplified compassion, integrity and personal responsibility, and the lessons that he taught by example will linger forever our hearts, his family expressed. Mr. Richardson is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Michael Scott Richardson and Suzy Richardson of Tucson, Arizona; his daughter, Laura Richardson of Sunnyvale; and his granddaughters, Kimberly Richardson White and her husband Zac, Lindsey Richardson and Christina and Amy Greever. A memorial service will be held on July 17, 2010 in Campbell, California. For details, please contact Mr. Richardsons daughter, Laura: 408-743-4805. Per Mr. Richardsons wish, his ashes will be scattered over the Pacific near the Golden Gate Bridge to complete his return to the building blocks of the universe, for, as he said, We are made of stardust. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Penn State Erie Behrend College, Logan House, 4215 Station Rd., Erie, PA 16563, for the WT Richardson scholarship; or to Claremont Graduate University, 165 E. 10th St., Claremont, CA 91711.

After returning to the states, Mr. Richardson was assigned to the Wright Field (now Wright-Patterson Air Force Base) Aero Med lab and began what would be his lifes work: designing and developing cockpit and crew stations that fit the pilots, rather than accepting the previous practice of bending the pilots to fit the airplane. It was during his time at Wright Field that he fell in love with and married Juanita Lenore Michaels, who predeceased him. Throughout his life, Mr. Richardson continued to learn, read and write. He earned a masters degree from Arizona State, and a PhD from Claremont Graduate School (now University). He com-

Fern Ebertz
Longtime Pilgrim Place resident Fern Margaret Pierce Ebertz died on May 24, 2010 at the Pilgrim Place Health Services Center. She was 95. Ms. Pierce was born at home on the family farm in Pierce, North Dakota on August 12, 1914, the first child of Alma Nichols Pierce and Charles Pierce. On June 5, 1940, she married William Bill Alvin Ebertz, a Congregational minister serving churches in the western Dakotas. Over a period of 34 years, she and her husband served churches in Mott and Jamestown, North Dakota; Hillsboro, Oregon; Sloan, Iowa; Wichita, Kansas; and Sheridan, Wyoming. She spent the last 25 years of her life at Pilgrim Place. Throughout her life, Ms. Ebertz taught in a variety of capacities and venues. Even in the last years of her life, her caregivers often referred to her as Teacher because of her natural inclination to encourage people to stretch themselves to do or learn something new. Following high school, she earned a rural teaching certificate and taught for several years in one-room schoolhouses near her home, often riding a horse to work. She earned her bachelors degree from Jamestown College in 1938 and then taught for 2 more years before her marriage. Ms. Ebertzs talents were well used as she wholeheartedly assumed the responsibilities of a pastors wife, even preaching on a few occasions when her husband was unable to do so. After their children became more independent, she

and won the hearts of her students, said Pilgrim Place resident Anna May Towne who worked with Ms. Ebertz overseas. There were always potential troublemakers, particularly in this class of 50, but she charmed the students. She loved them, and they loved her. While her care in the early years of her ministry was focused mainly on the family and local congregational activities, her year in the Philippines increased her interest in mission projects. She became involved in Church World Service projects and, throughout the 80s, served on the United Church Board for World Ministries. This led to educational mission trips all over the world and the sharing of those experiences with many congregations back in the states. Ms. Ebertzs concern for the poor and the oppressed in our world grew throughout her life. One organization particularly close to her heart and to which she devoted many hours was the International Christian Scholarship Foundation, which awards scholarships to needy students throughout the world. When she saw a need, she did what she could to meet it, remarked her daughter, Mary Freese. Even as her loved ones were always in her prayers, she also prayed that Gods justice and peace become a reality in our world. Ms. Ebertzs move to Pilgrim Place in 1985 offered numerous opportunities for continued service to others even while retired, both in the Pilgrim community and in the Claremont United Church of Christ, Congregational. During her years at Pilgrim Place, she enjoyed renewing friendships she had had throughout her life and making many new ones. Fern is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law, Mary and Ken Freese of Fort Collins, Colorado and Lois and Allan Stuchlik of Englewood, Colorado; her son, David Ebertz of Gillette, Wyoming; her son and daughter-in-law, Roger and Susan Ebertz of Dubuque, Iowa; her sister and brother-in-law, Florence and Cliff Rider of Everett, Washington; her sister-in-law, Alice Pierce of Pierce, North Dakota; and by her 7 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, William Ebertz; her first son, Louis William Ebertz; 2 sisters, Clara Olson Overbo and Eunice Jorstad; her brother, Floyd Pierce; and one grandchild. A service in celebration of Ms. Ebertzs life was held on June 25, 2010 at Claremont United Church of Christ, Congregational. Following another service at Pierce Congregational Church in Pierce, North Dakota, she will be laid to rest beside her husband and their son at the Pierce Congregational Cemetery, in the community where she grew up. Memorial donations may be made to the Fern Ebertz Scholarship Fund, Jamestown College, 6082 College Lane, Jamestown, ND 58405; or to Pilgrim Place, 660 Avery Rd., Claremont CA 91711.

was drawn back into formal teaching, particularly to the education of special needs youth. To better equip herself for this field, she devoted nights and Saturdays to earn a masters degree in special education, continuing to teach special needs students in Wichita and Sheridan until her retirement in 1980. Some of her special needs students continued to correspond with her until the end of her life. Ms. Ebertzs vocation next led her to volunteer as an English teacher at Dansalan College in the Philippines for one year. Fern was one of the most generous, outgoing people, always interested in others. She came to this Muslim area of the southern Philippines to teach in the English department of the high school,

sion I next season. A Pasadena native, Regas graduated from Claremont McKenna College with a degree in psychology in 2009. He came back to conduct postgraduate research and utilize the final year of his eligibility on the rugby team this past season. According to Regas, the sport of rugby provided many things that the varsity sports couldnt. My freshman year, I played football but rugby was my passion and I decided to focus on that, he said. Wally [Cox] had put a system in place that was student-run in a lot of respects. He emphasized the importance for us to have an experience in camaraderie and athletics but at the same time, put our careers first. It was ingrained that we would have a social with the teams we played and get to know our opponents [off the field]. Were constantly trying to expand the rugby network.

Regas is currently waiting to see if he will be selected for the AllAmerican tour team that will travel to England. Approximately 25 of the 37 All-Americans will end up on the team. Outside of rugby, Regas also has his sights set on a future medical career. He plans to apply to 30 medical schools in the next month and cites USCs Keck School of Medicine as one of his top choices. Regas realizes that pursuing his medical interests may come at a cost to his rugby career as a player. I would love to stay local if I can, Regas said. I know I wont be able to play at a competitive level anymore but I can still play for fun and maybe I can even come back to the team to coach.
