Procedure

A. Activity:

Drawing and Labeling of the Cartesian Plane Procedure: 1. Choose a partner. Each pair will be given 1 graphing paper. 2. Fold your graphing paper into halves and then fold it again to create 4 sections. 3. Trace the crease of the paper to construct two real number lines perpendicular to each other at the 0 point of each line. Label this point of intersection as O for origin. 4. The horizontal line is called the x-axis. The vertical number line is called the yaxis. Put an arrowhead at the ends. 5. Label each quadrant I, II, III, and IV

6. Label the grids on both axes to create a 1-1 mapping between the points in the plane and ordered pairs of real numbers (x,y). The first number x is called x coordinate or abscissa and the second number y is called y-coordinate or ordinate. 7. Congratulations! You have already made a Cartesian Coordinate Plane.

B. Analysis

Why do you think is the purpose of doing this activity? To find the coordinates of a point

Why do I have to put arrowheads at the ends? To indicate the infinity of the set of real numbers.

Why is it called an ordered pair? Because of the order of how it is written. X first then Y.

Any other questions about the drawing?

C. Abstraction

Find the coordinates of point A as shown.

A(6,4)

To find the coordinates of a point: 1. Draw a line from the point perpendicular to the x-axis. The point where the line intersects the x-axis is the x-coordinate. 2. Draw a line from the point perpendicular to the y-axis. The point where the line intersects the y-axis is the y-coordinate.

What is the abscissa? 6

What is the ordinate? 4

Board work:

Find the coordinates of these points

(Draw points plotted in the Cartesian plane)

Draw 4 points scattered in quadrant I. What have you noticed in the coordinates? Both coordinate x and y are positive X>0 Y>0

Draw 4 points scattered in quadrant II. What have you noticed in the coordinates? All abscissa is negative, all ordinate is positive X<0, y>0

Draw 4 points scattered in quadrant III. What have you noticed in the coordinates? Both x and y coordinates are negative X<0, y<0

Draw 4 points scattered in quadrant IV. What have you noticed in the coordinates? All abscissa is positive, all ordinate is negative X>0, y<0

D. Application

Given the coordinates of a point, determine or locate in what quadrant or axis each point lies.

1. A(-3,2) 2. B(4,2) 3. C(1, 3) 4. D(-6,-5) 5. E(-1,3)

6. F(0,-4) 7. H(-2,1) 8. I(5,-5) 9. J(-5,5) 10. K(3,-2)
