SYNOPSIS

The down line between stations Colonelganj and Jarwal Road of Gonda Kacheri - Jarwal Road section, Lucknow division North Eastern Railway is troublesome requiring frequent track maintenance due to presence of a number of weak formation locations. Sectional speed of this route is 100 km/h. However, temporary speed restriction varying from 30 kmph to 50 kmph has been imposed in the year 2006 at number of locations due to unstable formation. On request of NE Railway, detailed field investigation including collection of undisturbed/disturbed soil samples from troublesome sites have been undertaken by RDSO.

This report includes remedial measures for rehabilitation of weak formation on six such locations on the abovementioned line.

----------------------

1.0 INTRODUCTION The down line between stations Colonelganj and Jarwal Road of Gonda Kacheri - Jarwal Road section, Lucknow division, North Eastern Railway is troublesome requiring frequent track maintenance due to presence of a number of locations of weak formation. The section was opened for traffic on 01-09-2002. RDSO team visited locations of weak formation in the month of August 06 to investigate and to suggest remedial measures. The present report covers with following stretches:1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. Km Km Km Km Km Km 687/13-14 691/1-2 695/1-2 698/1-2 699/5-6 702/2-3

2.0 REFERENCE Divisional Railway Manager (Engg.)/N.E.Rly, Lucknow Jn. vide his letter No. W/275/L/Da-3A dated 24.07.2006 requested RDSO for field investigation of the problematic stretches and advise necessary measures. 3.0 SCOPE OF WORK Scope of this report consists of site inspection, soil explorations, testing of soil samples and recommendations for the stabilisation of unstable formation on the above locations. 4.0 HISTORY, SITE OBSERVATIONS AND CAUSES OF TROUBLE This doubling work was completed in the year 1999 & was opened to traffic in year 2002. Railway Board had given dispensation for onemeter thick blanket on top of formation vide Boards letter no. 96/W1/NE/DL/1 dated 05.05.2000. RDSO issued a certificate in year 2001 vide letter no RS/G/95/NER dated 17.04.2001: 4.1 Following observations were made during site visit: (i) (ii) (iii) (iv) (v) No blanket has been provided during construction. Low cess and deep rain cuts have been observed throughout the section. At km 691/1-2, slip was reported to occur twice in the year 2006. Flattening of slope has been observed at most of the locations. Deep ballast penetrations have been observed at many locations particularly more than 1.5 m at km 691/1-2. 1

4.2 On the basis of site investigation, the main causes of formation problems appears to be as given below: (i) (ii) (iii) (iv) (v) Cess is eroded and its width is less than standard. Non-provision of blanket material. Bank is constructed with fine-grained soil. At many locations, the degree of compaction (NDD/MDD x100) has been found less than 98%. Ballast penetration indicates that there is bearing failure of formation in general.

6.0 TESTING OF SOIL SAMPLES The soil samples were tested in Geotechnical Engineering Laboratory of RDSO for the following tests: (a.) (b.) (c.) (d.) (e.) Natural Moisture Content (NMC) Natural Dry Density (NDD) Grain Size Analysis OMC & MDD Triaxial shear test in consolidated Undrained condition with measurement of pore pressure (Cu)

7.0 SLOPE STABILITY ANALYSIS Slope stability analysis has been carried out with the help of slope/W software using results of soil testing carried out in GE Lab., RDSO. Slope stability analysis for the location km 691/1-2 (DN) has been done. The height of bank at this location is 3.81m. Existing slope has been found safe as the factor of safety is > 1.4. The output (sketch) of the analysis is given as Fig.13. 8.0 SITE INSPECTION AND COLLECTION OF FIELD DATA 8.1 Km 687/13-14 Height of the bank is 1.06 m. 2

Low cess, pot holes on cess and slopes and pond filled with water upto toe level were observed. The maximum ballast penetration has observed as 70 cm. Cross section & ballast penetration profile has been plotted. Pattern and extent of ballast penetration and bank profiles is shown in Fig. 1. One undisturbed and one disturbed soil samples were collected from formation to determine the type of soil & its behaviour.

8.2 Km 691/1-2 The height of the bank is 3.81 m. As reported by SSE/Pway/Jarwal Road, slips have occurred twice in Monsoon of 2006 and the temporary speed restriction of 30 kmph and 50 kmph were imposed subsequently. The maximum ballast penetration of 100 cm (below right rail) has been measured. Cross section & Ballast penetration profile has been plotted showing the pattern and extent of ballast penetration and bank profiles (Fig. 2). Low cess has also been observed. One undisturbed and one disturbed soil samples were collected from formation to determine the type of soil & its behaviour.

8.3 Km 695/1-2 Height of the bank is 1.58 m. One undisturbed and one disturbed soil samples were collected from formation to understand their behaviour and to assess the capacity to withstand dynamic loads. From the above test results, it is seen that the formation soil is classified as MI, i.e. silt with intermediate compressibility. High pore pressure develops on application of load in such type of soil depending on drainage boundary. In such type of soil, dissipation of pore pressure will take place by draining out water through slope or from top of the embankment leading to slope flattening and disturbance to track geometry. The degree of compaction indicates that the compaction at this location is only 86.24%, which is much less than the required value of 98%. Bank height is 1.06 m, which is low and does not require any slope stability analysis. 5

Under above circumstances for MI type of soil, minimum 100 cm thick compacted blanket layer is required at top of formation as per Para4.3.2 and 4.3.4 of Guidelines For Earthwork In Railway Projects: July 2003. 9.2 Km 691/1-2 Soil Properties S.No. 1. 2. From the above test results, it is seen that the formation soil is classified as CI i.e. Clay with intermediate compressibility. Hence, minimum 100 cm thick compacted blanket layer is required at top of formation as per para no. 4.3.2 and 4.3.4 of Guidelines for earthwork in Railway projects, July 2003. The degree of compaction i.e. NDD/MDD x100 indicates that the compaction of this location is only 86.6 % against requirement of 98%. Bank height is 1.06 m, which is low and does not require any slope stability analysis. 10.0 FORMULATION OF REMEDIAL MEASURES The remedial measures should aim to increase the bearing capacity of formation to prevent ballast penetration and sinking of formation due to traffic movement. The analysis and discussion of test results suggests provision of adequate thickness of the blanket of specified material as mentioned in Annexure-I. 11.0 RECOMMENDATIONS Based on the details of site inspection of problematic stretches and test results of soil samples, the location wise recommendations are as follow: General: (i) Laying of blanket of required thickness and specified material is the only effective remedial measure against bearing capacity failure. The thickness of blanket as per para no. 4.3.2 and 4.3.4 of Guidelines for earthwork in Railway projects, July 2003. should be ensured and it should be provided in full width of formation including widened portion.

(ii) Top of formation must have a cross slope 1:30. (iii) 30 cm clean ballast cushion should be ensured. (iv) Boulder pitching should be done at toe of slope upto height 30 cm above HFL.

10

11.1

For Km. 687/13-14

(i) Minimum 100 cm thick compacted blanket cushion shall be provided as per the specification. (ii) Rain cuts, low cess, pot holes should be made good with compacted sand and turfing of slopes should be done. (iii) All locations where embankment is submerged & pond exists should be filled with soil upto sufficient distance (height of bank + 3 m) from the toe so that water logging can be avoided at the toe of embankment. Alternatively, a toe wall may be provided at this location. 11.2 For Kms 691/1-2, 695/1-2, 698/1-2, 699/5-6 (i) (ii) 11.3 Minimum 100 cm thick compacted blanket layer should be provided. Low cess should be repaired and turfing should be done.

For Km. 702/2-3 (i) Minimum 100 cm thick compacted blanket cushion should be provided.

(ii) Low cess should be repaired and turfing should be done. (iii) All locations where embankment is submerged & pond exists should be filled with soil upto sufficient distance (height of bank + 3 m) from the toe so that water logging can be avoided at the toe of embankment. Alternatively, a toe wall may be provided at this location. (iv) Boulder pitching should be done at toe of slope upto height 30 cm above HFL.
