The Crossroads Of European
Literature Seminar Discussion
Join our panel for their discussion of our project theme:
The Crossroads of European Literature chaired by Vilenica nternational
Literary Festival Director: Gasper Troha
Suzana Tratnik was born in 1963 in Murska Sobota, Slovenia. She
obtained her BA in sociology from the Faculty of Social Sciences at the
University of Ljubljana, and her MA in gender anthropology from the
nstitutum Studiorum Humanitatis in Ljubljana. She has published six
collections of short stories: Pod nilo (Bellow Zero, 1997), Na svojem
dvorisu (n One's Own Backyard, 2003), Vzporednice (Parallels, 2005),
Cesa nisem nikoli razumela na vlaku (Things 've Never Understood on
the Train, 2008), Dva svetova (Two Worlds, 2010), and Rezervat
(Reservation, 2012). She has also published two novels: Ime mi je
Damjan (My Name is Damjan, 2001), Tretji svet (Third World, 2007) and
the children's picture book Zafuskana Ganca (The Hany Rattie, 2010).
She received the national "Preseren Foundation Award for Literature
in 2007. Her books and short stories have been translated into twenty
languages, while she herself has translated several books of British and
American fction, non-fction, and plays, including works from authors
such as Judith Butler, Adrienne Rich, Leslie Feinberg, Michael
Cunningham, Jackie Kay, Mary Dorcey, Katy Watson, an Mc Ewan,
Dennis Cooper, and Truman Capote.
With an economic crisis kicking in hard and reforms diminishing the cultural feld to its minimum
Slovenian as well as European literature has found itself at the crossroads where it needs to rethink terms
of its production and distribution. Like Gaelic, Slovene is spoken by a relatively small number of people
(around 2 million) which limits readership. What does it mean for contemporary authors? We have already
seen many musicians start to record songs in English in order to strengthen a possibility of an international
success. s something similar to be expected in the feld of literature? s contemporary Europe interested
in so called smaller literatures? Judging from the results of the EU grants for translation the answer is no.
The majority of projects are translations from bigger to smaller languages and not the other way around.
What can publishers do to make things better? Publish books in coproductions with foreign publishers and
in several languages? These questions will be discussed by three prominent Slovene authors that have
already been translated and are seeing their frst signs of success abroad. At the same time Boris A.
Novak, one of the most renowned Slovene translators, can add an interesting perspective to the question
of the importance of the mother tongue for a literary author.

Edna OBrien
in Conversation with
Vincent Woods
Join us for a very special evening
when rish fction heroine Edna
O'Brien will speak to broadcaster
Vincent Woods about her recent
memoir Country Girl.
Born in reland in 1930 and driven into exile after the publication of her controversial frst novel, The
Country Girls, Edna O'Brien has created a body of work which bears comparison with the very best
writers of the twentieth century. n Country Girl we come face to face with literary life of high drama and
contemplation. Along the way there are encounters with Hollywood giants, pop stars and literary
titans - all of whom lend this life, so gorgeously, sometimes painfully remembered here, a terrible
poignancy. n prose which sparkles with the effortless gifts of a master in her ninth decade, Edna O'Brien
has recast her life with the imaginative insight of a poet. t is a book of unfathomable depths and honesty.
Edna O'Brien has made of her memories something of both precision and depth, a book that, letting us
see her as she was, jumps with an all-consuming curiosity from one lucidly narrated event to another,
the scenes of disenchantment and bewilderment mingling with an assortment of surprises, traps, and
ventures that are often, but not always, disastrous shocks. Only Colette is her equal as a student of the
ardors of an independent woman who is also on her own as a writer.'
-Philip Roth
'What a banquet indeed. A book of magics, truths, stories, and quiet immensity. No one else could have
written it, and no one else could have lived it. The book is a poetic testament to what Scott Fitzgerald
called our 'capacity for wonder'.
-Andrew O'Hagan
Since her debut novel The Country Girls Edna O'Brien has written over twenty works of fction along with
biographies of James Joyce and Lord Byron. She is the recipient of many awards including the rish Pen
Lifetime Achievement Award, the American National Art's Gold Medal and the Ulysses Medal. Born and
raised in the west of reland she has lived in London for many years.

Lucy Caldwell & Tishani Doshi
Everything Begins Elsewhere
From poetry to plays to novels, our authors will discuss writing across different forms, the origins of
stories and how place, religion and childhood often infuence and affect their novels. The event will cover
a range of the writers' work with a particular focus on The Pleasure Seekers by Tishani Doshi, and The
Meeting Point and All the Beggars Riding by Lucy Caldwell. Galway City Arts Offcer James C. Harrold
will chair the event.
All the Beggars Riding
Narrated by Lara, nearing forty and nursing her dying mother, All the Beggars Riding is the heartbreaking
portrait of a woman confronting her past. Lara's father was a prominent plastic surgeon who had honed his
skills on the bomb victims of the Troubles. The family grew up used to him being absent: he only came to
London for two weekends a month to work at the Harley Street Clinic where he had met their mother years
before but when Lara was twelve she found out that home, for her father, wasn't with her own family; it was
in Belfast, where he led his other life. When he is killed suddenly in a helicopter crash, her father's secret
life collides unavoidably with her own.

Praise for The Meeting Point by Lucy Caldwell:
Lucy Caldwell
'A beautifully written novel that manages to address the
momentous subjects of love and loss, and faith and
betrayal, with a calm and quiet grace.'
- The Sunday Times
'Compulsively readable. Its
technical accomplishment,
incrementally raising suspense,
involving us in its characters'
desires and designs, attests to
Caldwell's skills as a playwright.'
- The Guardian

Tishani Doshi
The Pleasure Seekers:
Tishani Doshi received widespread critical acclaim for her frst novel The Pleasure Seekers (a fctionalized
re-telling of her own parent's relationship). The story follows Babo, a native of Madras, and Sian, his
cream-skinned Welsh wife, whom he meets in London in 1968. Following their marriage the pair move
back to Madras as a trade off with the family of Babo, who are very disapproving of their union. The story
progresses into the twentieth century charting the lives of Babo, Sian, and their family as they navigate
their way through the uncharted territory of a "hybrid family.
Praise for The Pleasure Seekers by Tishani Doshi:
"This is a captivating, delightful novel. I was
totally engaged by Tishani Doshi's people
and by their world, and the language often
rises when speaking of the great matters,
life, death, and above all love to powerful
metaphorical heights" - Salman Rushoie
"The Pleasure Seekers is beautifully written,
engrossing and a word I don't often use
when describing a good book lovely.
Emotionally successful families are rare in
fction; they are harder to capture than the
disastrous ones. But Tishani Doshi carries it
off brilliantly"- Roooy Doyle

The Flame Alphabet
Both morally engageo ano wickeoly entertaining, T/ Eloo Jl/oot begs the question: what is lelt ol
civilization when we lose the ability to communicate with those we love? The speech ol chiloren has mutateo
into a virus which is killing their parents. At nrst it only allects Jews then everyone. Living quietly in the
suburbs, Sam ano Claire`s lives are threateneo when their oaughter, Esther, is inlecteo with the oisease. Each
woro she speaks whether cruel or kino, banal or loving is toxic. Raoio transmissions lrom strange sources
inoicate that people across the country are growing increasingly alarmeo. As the contagion spreaos, Sam ano

from the west of reland. He is the author of a
collection of short stories, Getting it in the Head
(1996), and two novels, Crowe's Requiem (1998)
and Notes from a Coma (2005). n 1996
McCormack was awarded the Rooney Prize for

He has received several Arts Council Awards and
in 2007 he was awarded a Civitella Ranieri

'Gives Ian McEwan and Edgar Allan Poe a

thriving and in the hands of writers like Mike
McCormack it can only continue to.'

Mary Costello, originally from Galway, now lives in
Dublin. Her early stories were published in New Irish
Writing at The Sunday Tribune. Her frst book, a
collection of short stories entitled The China Factory, was
published in 2012 by Stinging Fly Press. The collection
was nominated for the Guardian First Book Award and
was shortlisted in the rish Book Awards Newcomer
category. n October 2012 RTE Radio featured it in their
Book on One slot and in February 2013 fve of the stories
were broadcast on BBC radio.
'Mary Costello has written for many years with an
occasional story published, but no great encouragement
to keep her at her desk. If she is an emerging writer, then
she has emerged with great slowness and care. This frst
collection has the feel of work that refused to be
abandoned; of stories that were written for the sake of
getting something important right. A few, perhaps the
earliest, have an old-fashioned, derivative air, but when
she breaks into the world of contemporary Ireland,
Costello's work is true, her problems distinctive and the
voice all her own.'
