Dear Readers,
This presentation is prepared for those of the beginner level who want to learn about DSLR Photography. This will help you understand the meaning of photography, exposure, DSLR camera body, lenses and the basic composition in photography. In addition, there are a few collections of photographs by two famous photographers whom I most admire. None of those pictures, photos and article in this presentation is my own. They are all from the internet. I hope this will help you to understand the basic DSLR photography with no difficulty.

Q: What is the meaning of the word 'photography'? A: The literal meaning is "Writing (graphy) with light (photo)". The term comes from The Greek word phos, photos - light and graphos - writing. The word photography means writing with light but most photographers claim they are painting with light! This 'writing with light' or as us photographers say ' painting with light' was first reputed to have been termed by Sir John Herschel to William Henry Fox Talbot in letter in 1839. Herschel was an English astronomer who also devised the words negative and positive and I believe the word snapshot. A lot of his work involved chemistry which was the forerunner of the black and white processes. Henry Fox Talbot was the inventor of the negative positive process of photography. He was an English gentleman, chemist, mathematician, linguist and archeologist.

UNSERSTANDING EXPOSURE
What is Exposure?
Your camera understands EXPOSURE, which is essentially the total amount of light entering your camera used to create the photo. Exposure describes how light or how dark your photographs are Under-exposure is when your photos come out too dark. Over-exposure is when your photos come out too light, washed out or blown out.
(L) Over-exposed Too bright. The white dog is blinding. Need sunglasses. (M) Under-exposed Too dark. The white dog looks like a phantom. (R) Nice balance of light on the dog, bubbles and grass. Awwww! Precious.

But slightly Under and Over Exposed images can be great for artistic or stylistic reasons! Images that are technically considered to be over or underexposed can be visually appealing:
(above) Both these beach images have elements of under and over (above) Lighter, brighter tomato or food images can look pretty exposure. But stylistically, they can be quite beautiful from the when shot slightly over-exposed. contrasts of light and dark.

When you take a picture and you hear that click, that is the sound of your shutter opening and closing. Imagine the concept like shutters on your window. You open and close the shutters to control the amount of light entering your room. Same idea goes for the camera.
Shutter speed is about TIME, the amount of time it takes for light to enter your camera, how long it takes to let light through the camera.

ISO refers to how sensitive your camera is to light. Originally this referred to the film, but with digital cameras, the ISO sensitivity is in reference to the cameras sensor. Basically, the more sensitive your camera is to light, the higher the ISO number, the more possible it is to shoot in low light situations. Higher ISO number = higher sensitivity to light = better ability to shoot in low light

18 % Grey
Camera meters are colour blind. They see everything in shades of grey from black to white and every shade in between. Halfway between white and black is middle grey. Middle grey reflects 18% of light; this is why its called 18% grey. Camera meters are calibrated to 18% grey. Meaning, regardless of the type of metering, the meter will give a reading designed to photograph at 18% grey.

WHITE BLANCE
What is White Balance?
White balance is basically a way to measure the temperature of light and to balance out the colors of your photography for the desired results. Ideally, the goal of a conventional photograph is to attain an ideal White Balance where the white color is as close to true, neutral white as possible and all of the colors in your image are true to life.
At its simplest the reason we adjust white balance is to get the colors in your images as accurate as possible. Read more: http://digital-photography-school.com/introduction-to-white-balance#ixzz2KyOpWXLB

Typical white balance presets include Daylight, Shade, Cloudy, Tungsten, Fluorescent, and Flash. These work exactly as you'd expect - you simply choose the appropriate setting for your shooting conditions and the camera will do the hard work of making white objects appear white.

1. f-number
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In optics, the f-number (sometimes called focal ratio, f-ratio, f-stop, or relative aperture) of an optical system is the ratio of the lens's focal length to the diameter of the entrance pupil. It is a dimensionless number that is a quantitative measure of lens speed, an important concept in photography. The f-number is given by
Where is the focal length, and is the diameter of the entrance pupil (effective aperture).

Lenses with a wide picture angle are referred to as wide-angle lenses, lenses with a small picture angle as telephoto lenses. Lens Wide angle Telephoto Picture angle Wide Small Focal length Short Long Area captured Large Small Apparent size Small Large
A zoom lens with a focal length of 1855 mm offers the widest picture angle at 18 mm and the smallest picture angle at 55 mm. If the only lens available is an 1855 mm zoom lens but you want wider anglessay, for landscape shotsyou should buy a lens that offers focal lengths shorter than 18 mm, for example, a 1024 mm lens. If, on the other hand, you want to photograph at greater distances, you should choose a lens that offers focal lengths longer than 55 mm, for example 55200 mm.

TYPE OF LENSES
Macro Lens
Many lenses carry the word macro' in their title but aren't. To be a true macro lens it must enable you to reproduce your subject at 1:1 lifesize on your sensor. Although you still have great fun shooting close-ups with macro-lite' lenses that only offer half lifesize (1:2) or quarter lifesize (1:4), if you're really into exploring the world of miniature things then there's no substitute for a proper macro lens. http://www.whatdigitalcamera.com/equipment/advice/492817/complete-guide-to-choosing-lenses-macro-lenses.html
Fisheye Lens
A fisheye lens is an ultra wide-angle lens that produces strong visual distortion intended to create a wide panoramic or hemispherical image. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fisheye_lens
Tilt-shift Lens
In photography, a perspective control lens allows the photographer to control the appearance of perspective in the image; the lens can be moved parallel to the film or sensor, providing the equivalent of corresponding view camera movements. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tilt-shift_lenslens
Prime Lense
In film and photography, a prime lens is either a photographic lens whose focal length is fixed. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prime_lens
Zoom Lens
A zoom lens is a mechanical assembly of lens elements for which the focal length (and thus angle of view) can be varied. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zoom_lens
Normal Lens
In photography and cinematography, a normal lens is a lens that reproduces a field of view that generally looks "natural" to a human observer under normal viewing conditions. For a 35 mm camera with a diagonal of 43 mm, the most commonly used normal lens is 50 mm, but focal lengths between about 40 and 58 mm are also considerednormal. The 50 mm focal length was chosen by Oskar Barnack, the creator of the Leica camera. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Normal_lens
Wide-angle Lens
In photography and cinematography, a wide-angle lens refers to a lens whose focal length is substantially smaller than the focal length of a normal lens for a given film plane. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wide-angle_lens
Telephoto Lens
In photography and cinematography, a telephoto lens is a specific type of a long-focus lens in which the physical length of the lens is shorter than the focal length.
