Abstract: What characterizes the globalizat ion of historiography since the 17t h century has been t he rise
of national history, w hich appeared f irst in Europe and spread quickly throughout t he world. If t he
w rit ing of national history reflect ed the political reality of modern Europe, it also appealed to nonWestern hist orians because nat ionalism as an ideology helped t heir strugg le in confront ing Western int rusion. T hough import ant, nat ionalist historiography also has inherent problems result ing from it s
Eurocent ric orig in and ex perience.
