Natural Disaster Project

(Power Point and Brochure)

This is a doozy, but FUN!

In this activity you will be answering the following essential question:

What can you do to prepare for different types of natural disasters?

You will be working in a team of 4 students to create a preparedness guide to different natural disasters. Each student within your group will be responsible for one of the disasters listed below. The group will then compile their information into a single document that answers AT LEAST the following questions: How common is this disaster and where does this disaster normally occur and during what time of year? How often? What are the major causes of damage, destruction, death associated with this disaster? People killed annually? Money damages incurred? What can be done before the disaster happens? How can you prepare? What should be done during the disaster? What should be done after the disaster?

Step One: Describe the disaster and the frequency of the disaster The table below contains links to pages with lists of web sites that may be useful in answering this question. If you find other web sites that quickly and easily summarize the information please copy or bookmark the URL (address) so that it can be added to the lists. Hurricane Tsunami Tornado Lightning Volcanic Eruption Landslide/Debris flow Earthquake Thunderstorms

Step Two : Determine the damage caused by the disaster Use the links from the pages above to discover information about the damage caused by the natural disaster that you are investigating. Answer the questions and add other pertinent info! Step Three: Determine steps to take before, during and after a disaster.

Hurricane Tornado Volcanic Eruption Earthquake Landslide/Debris flow

Suggested document starting point Are you ready for a Hurricane? Are you ready for a Tornado? Preparing for Volcanic Emergencies Are you ready for an Earthquake? Landslide and Debris flow

Step Four: Create your group Power Point Share your information with the group and create the power point presentation. All students within the group should have a similar format for the Power Point slides you create. Each group will be responsible for presenting their findings to the class. The group should have a Power Point presentation to use as well as a 3column brochure to hand out to all students in the class. The documents should focus more on content than style and they should be printed in black and white for the class. If you want to hand in a single color copy for evaluation that is OK but don't waste the color ink on handouts to distribute to the class.
