About Institute of Chemical Technology, Mumbai

Institute of Chemical Technology, Mumbai (ICT), a deemed university under section 3 of UGC Act, 1956, is one of the foremost academic institutions in India with a proven track record in conducting research in Chemical Engineering and Technology. ICT has been a dynamic and quality conscious institution, and responsive to rapid economic and technological developments occurring at national and international levels. ICT offers a range of undergraduate and post-graduate courses covering the entire range of the chemical industry, with a total enrollment of over 1000 undergraduates, 250 Masters and 450 Ph.D. candidates. ICT has a vibrant research culture keeping a symbiosis of academic excellence and practical relevance with generation of knowledge in frontier areas of Chemical Engineering and Technology that is put in industrial practice. Its close relationship to the industry has resulted in relevant research programs with a high level of implementation of innovations, a large consultancy program, a dynamic curriculum development process and a high level of financial support from the industry.

About DAE-ICT Center for Chemical Engineering Education and Research

While ICT is a major resource institution in terms of developing innovative technologies and performing fundamental research at the cutting edge on the global scale, Department of Atomic Energy (DAE), in particular, Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) and Indira Gandhi Centre of Atomic Research (IGCAR) have demonstrated over decades, their ability to conduct multi-disciplinary, mission-oriented R&D, leading to a large number of indigenous and innovative chemical engineering processes, equipment, instruments, and technologies. In 2008, DAE and ICT joined hands to launch the DAE-ICT Center for Chemical Engineering Education and Research to support multidisciplinary research activities in fields of Chemical Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemistry, Chemical Sciences, Physics and Mathematics; and to impart education in these fields at the Ph.D. level. Annual intake of the center is approximately 20 Ph.D. students per year from various streams, with minimum qualifications being Master's degree in basic sciences, Master's degree in Chemical Engineering, Metallurgical/Materials Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and/or Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering, Metallurgical/Materials Engineering and Mechanical Engineering. The Centre supports approx. 100 Ph.D. students, all engaged in research in the energy sector and areas of national interest. This scheme also provides an opportunity to the young research scholars, who will not only be trained with broad curricula covering basic sciences and chemical engineering but also be able to carry out their experiments in the state of the art laboratories of DAE institutes, especially of BARC and IGCAR. Another objective of this center is to boost Collaborative Research Programme between DAE institutions and ICT. by adding in a major way to the existing research projects commissioned through the Board of Nuclear

Sciences and the Centre for Knowledge Based Engineering (CKBE). Process simulation of heavy water plants, computational fluid dynamic modeling of fluidized bed with chemical vapor deposition on particles, cavitation in sodium pumps, hydrogen generation by thermo-chemical processes, fuel reprocessing technologies, radioactive waste management, energy conversion technologies, etc are some of the areas in which research is carried out in the DAE-ICT Center. The center provides a platform for interactions between R&D scientists of DAE and academic personnel from ICT. The new knowledge and the technologies generated in the center are expected to fulfill, at least partially, the urgent need of our country and society in terms of wealth generation and national security in various sectors.
